As freshmen, we are afraid we were not much of a success. We did have fun, though. The next year We began to show our ability. We held a tea dance which was novel and profitable. Our boys led the Junior Varsity Basketball squad to victory. The Junior Prom and play were very Successful, thanks to the cooperation of the whole class. Our Senior Play broke all records. We made a large net profit and also attained a Social and dramatic reputation. We have certainly enjoyed our four years in L. F. A. and are looking opti- mistically toward the future. l10l Sept. Oct. During the year, the Juniors gave the traditional Junior-Frosh party, introducing us to the social whirl of high school life. We finished our first year by winning the class championship on Field Day and by having a picnic at Crystal Lake. As sophisticated sophomores, we sailed along the first part of the year with Paul Smith as president, John Haberer as vice-president, Jean Burns as secretary and Jack Wolfe as treasurer, but with a depleted financial treasury. However, true to our reputation, we put over a very successful Square Dance for the Seniors, adding amply to our treasury. We opened our Junior year by giving a novelty dance for the Frosh, fea- turing Lew QKay Keyserj Shattuck and his orchestra. At Easter time we gave a most successful Prom, Jan Campbell and his famous collegiate orchestra furnish- ing the music. Our third and greatest success of the year was our Junior Play. We realized over two hundred dollars from this, while giving our audience a good time. The club presented the news of the L. F. A. through the local newspapers each week and the first issue of the club paper was published February 5, 1939 as The Lowville Academy Informer. This year the organization intends to pub- lish another club paper May 1, 1940. It will consist of four pages of interesting articles by members of the staff under subdivisions of original essays, sports, book reviews and humor. The oflicers of the club for 1939-1940 were Gerald Miller, president: William Murphy, vice-president: Mary Hedden, secretary and Bruce McDonald, treasurer. 1 1381 LOWACADIAN 0 1940 Lowville Future Farmers Again this year our Future Farmer Chapter has an enrollment of over fifty members. This year we are celebrating our twenty-ninth anniversary. Elwood Stoddard, Frederick Butts, and Alvin Jantzi represented the chapter in a judging contest at the Lewis County Fair, winning second place. Elwood Stoddard won first prize and Alvin Jantzi won fourth as individual winners. The State Fair judging team was composed of Robert Dening, Arthur Stanton, Paul McDonald, and Alvin Jantzi. The Dairy Herd Improve- ment Association won fourth place for its exhibit at the State Fair. The Canton judging team consisted of Arthur Widrick, Arthur Stanton and Harold Birchenough with LeRoy Houppert as alternate. At Cornell, Arthur Widrick, Arthur Stanton, LeRoy Houppert, and Alvin Jantzi represented Lowville. The results of the election for our oflicers were: Frederick Buckingham, president: Elkanah Lehman, vice-president: Alvin Jantzi, secretary: Robert Dening, treasurer and LeRoy Houppert, reporter. In order to raise money for the necessary functioning of the Chapter, we sold magazines. sponsored a pig raffle, and sold seeds. All of these proved highly successful. The chairmen of the Farm and Seed and Chick Committees are: Harold Birchenough and Alvin Jantzi respectively. Over three tons of farm seeds and three hundred high quality chicks were ordered by members of the Chapter for their projects. Plans are being made for the Father and Son Banquet which will be held the last part of May. Membership is based on scholarship, character, leadership and service. Publication of the Torch was continued and enjoyed by all. The National Honor room was available for conference and study. Steve Richardson was elected president, .lean Burns, secretary and treasurer, and Miss Jewett as faculty adviser. The Dancing Club purchased a second hand nickelodian which was affectionately known as C1randad to many. This machine was replaced shortly after the new year by a recon- ditioned Wurlitzer. The Dancing Club, meeting every Thursday evening, has been a bright spot in the list of social activities of high school life. The annual Carlowden Dance, sponsored by the Dancing Club, spelled a fitting conclusion for another successful year. Radio Club Starting its first full year as an organization, the Radio Club enjoyed a very successful year. The Club organized in September and elected Beryl Freeman, president: Zane Thomas, vice-president: John Carey, treasurer: and Esther Tiffany, secretary. The high lights of the Club year were the two trips made to Canton to broadcast over radio station WCAB. The first trip was made last autumn and the other this spring. The Girls' Cilee Club accompanied the organization, furnishing the musical part of the program. The Radio Club has also been active in the social Held, having given a dance, presented a program before the Parent-Teachers group, and given a chapel program. At regular meetings interviews, quizzes and amateur hours were conducted over the amplifying system after Club business had been disposed of. Jun- ior's pal and follower, Bumps, furnished a perfect foil for Junior in his antics. Junior, at the opening of the play, was affected with Hpetticoat fever but after he was instrumental in the apprehension of a crook, Jimmy, his true worth was appreciated by everyone, including his family. Meetings, the Masonic Minstrel Show and the Radio Club Broadcast from WIBX, Utica. The Chorus attended the sectional contest held at West Carthage on April 20 and the state contest at Poughkeepsie on May 3-4. The Lewis County Music Festival was held in Lowville on June 8 with Lowville acting as hosts to the surrounding school music organizations. The central characters were Paul and Frannie Hollis, sixteen-year-old twins. The plot revolved around the capers of Paul Hollis and his friends. While his parents were on a trip to Havana, Paul decided to modernize his father's store. He also tried to prevent his sister, Marjorie, from marrying Crandall Smythe, whom he suspected of being a crook. Paul became involved in serious trouble before everything was revealed and he finally was recognized as a hero. The band members decided to surrender their chance to enter the state and national con tests last year in preference of visiting New York and the World's Fair. The Cmrand March, in which Seniors and their partners participated, was led by Miss Doris Schoff, who was chosen Senior Ball queen by the Class of '39. The gym was attractively decorated with colored streamers converging toward silhouettes of fairyland characters on the side walls. Senior Dance In the gym, decorated with evergreen trees, Christmas trees and ground pine, Ray Bellaire swung into rhapsodizing melodies for jitterbugs and other quickies and smooth waltzers, at the Annual Senior Dance. From ten to two, romantic escorts maneuvered their charming maids under sprays of mistle- toe while others danced beneath the starry blue sky. December 30th will long be remembered for the decorations, music, and the swell time had by everyone. junior Prom Blue and white streamers, arranged in a sunburst effect, furnished a beautiful setting for the annual Junior Prom held in the gym March 26th. O'Connell Compiling seven wins and two losses the Academy nine easily made a place for itself in the school's athletic history. Because the two games it lost were both league contests, it was able to win only the second place in the Black River League, while Boonville captured top honors. The game which decided the championship was played at Boonville and was an airtight battle that could have been anybody's game: but Boonville nosed Lowville out 4 to 3. The only veterans from the preceding year were Gordon and Markham, which necessitated the building of a new team. Tuffy Narrows developed into a fine hurler and was most ably supported by Peters and Markham. Doyle set the pace in hitting with an average of .37l, Markham came next with 365, followed by Richardson with 357. The starting positions were as follows: Howard Narrows . Pitcher Thomas Doyle . . After two weeks of hard practice, the team continued its success of the past few years by hanging up an undefeated season in dual meets with Boonville and Canastota as well as Watertown. Backed by Ernest Buzzell with 3 M points, the team placed sixth in the Utica Free Academy Meet. In the State Sectional meet at Syracuse University, Lowville took second place in compe- tition against seventeen other teams. High scoring honors for the year were by Buzzell with 46 points. Other high scorers were: Gerald Wetmore, Robert Dekin, Charles Schramp, James Burke, John Vincent, James Osborne, and Milton Russum. Although graduation took many key men, prospects for next season are good. Russum and Osborne will return to form the nucleus of next year's squad. l53l LOWACADIAN O 1940 Varsity Basketball Captain Donald Sweet Manager . . Edward jaconski Coach . ....... Walter F. O'Connell The Big Red Basketball team Hnished its season with perhaps not so good a record as other teams in the past. but. nevertheless it must be said that the Lowville basketeers made every game an interesting one to watch. They were ably supported by the students of both the Junior and Senior High schools. The local five chalked up a record of live Wins to nine losses-but, this is not to be misin- terpreted to mean that they were unsuitable competitors for their opponents. Seven of the fourteen games played had final scores of from one to three points difference. Coach O'Connell spent more than half the season endeavoring to uncover a starting combination which would work together to his satisfaction. The team finished in second place in the Black River League with New York Mills taking the championship for the second consecutive year. The chances for a winning team in 1941 are very good since many experienced players will return. William Yasinski Coach Bill Yasinski did a fine job this year coaching the local Jayvee Team. When given a group of comparatively inexperienced players, he soon proved his ability and had them play- ing like veterans. His ball club won seven games and lost nine and ended the season in third position in the Black River Junior Varsity League. The New York Mills Jayvees copped first place. Howard CChappieQ Chapman not only led the team as captain, but also took top honors as high scorer with 124 points, coming within two points of last season's Junior Varsity indi- vidual scoring record. Some of the players on the Jayvees have shown fine promise to be very good varsity material for next year. Coach Yasinski will, no doubt, have as good or better success developing a Junior Varsity team in 1941. William Yasinski Due to the lack of interest and material it was decided to drop football from the athletic program in favor of the popular six-man football. The boys took to the game easily beginning the season by downing Sackets Harbor by 18 to 14. In the next fracas with the Rome State School for the Deaf on the home lield,- the Red and White emerged victorious 40 to 20. The following week the team journeyed to Verona and took them across by a 19 to 7 score. Taking the worst part of a 30 to 6 score, Rome was again defeated by Coach O'Connell's charges to ex- tend the winning streak to four. In the final contest at Sackets Harbor Lowville met its only defeat to close the season with four wins and one loss, Although graduation losses will be heavy, prospects for the next season are good. l56l LOWACADIAN 0 1940 irls' Athletics Hockey again this year ushered in the sports season for the girls. Very exciting games were played as the teams were well-matched, but the Seniors had to give in to their underclassmen, the Juniors and Sophomores, the Sophomores capturing first place and the Juniors second. In keeping with the custom established last year, a hockey banquet ended the season. With the coming of winter, cageball began to get under way. The Seniors took first place in order to win back their lost pride, but were closely followed by a tie between the Juniors and Sophomores. A ping-pong tournament was organized, but not much was done with that this year. lntra-mural basketball terminated the winter season. First place was won by the Juniors, and second by the Freshmen. A team organized from the different classes played Port Leyden on the home court and were victorious by nine points. They also won the laurels from Beaver Falls. A spaghetti supper and dance closed the season for the boys' and girls' teams. In the spring, classes were divided into teams for softball. The girls also enjoyed archery, thus ending the girls' athletics for 1939-1940. l57l LOWACADIAN 0 1940 Noon Hour Sports Noon Hour sports for girls this year consisted of cageball, ping-pong, basketball, softball, and archery. Hazel Ross won first place in the ping-pong tournament. The cageball league was won by Hazel Ross's team. There was'con- siderable rivalry for first place among the teams which played basketball this year. However, after much contesting between Betty Merriam's and Hazel Ross's team the latter captured the title. Outdoor basketball was also played earlier in the season. The girls joyously welcomed softball and archery in the spring. Under the supervision of Mr. Yasinski, teams have been organized among the boys to take care of every season. During the fall season, there was a choice between touch football and soccer. In mid-winter, basketball proved to be the most popular sport with Croghan taking the winning honors for the A division and Castorland for the B group. A bowling league was organized and matches rolled at regular intervals. As the weather permitted, interest in softball grew.
