Navy, a naval hero of the civil war. She is the First ship ot the Fleet to bear the name. LOWRY was built by the Bethlehem Steel Company of San Pedro, California. Her keel was laid on l August i943 and she was launched on 6 February 1944 under the sponsor- ship of Miss Ann Lowry, great - granddaughter of the Commodore. Com- missioned on 23 July l944, LOWRY entered the war formally on the mornina ff.-E - 2 -X -f'ef'1:frYf':v1?.:ve'51vi12t'511 ?1'a'f 3rl'I tests at Bikini. ln May ot lf?-47, while enroute to Sydney Australia,an interest- ing moment occurred when she crossed simultaneously the International Date Line ll8Oth meridianfl and the equator. Crewmembers were initiated into the Royal Order of the 'Golden Shellbacl4s. LOWRY was placed out of commission in reserve on 30 June l947 and re- activated on 27 December l95O For service in the Atlantic Fleet.
