Portugal The New and the Old Situated on the northern bank of the Tagus River, the city of Lisbon has known many a master and many a civilization. The strategic value of its site on the hills was recognized by the early settlers and Lisbon quickly became a chief city in Lusitania. Julius Caesar made the settlement a munici- pality about l4O B.C, The Moors were re- sponsible for the first strong fortifications after capturing the city in A.D. 713. Lisbon today is a modern looking city. Most of the buildings are in light, bright colors and have an unusual, attractive appearance. The city is impressive with spacious square, boule- vards, and fine public buildings. F3555 Arch over Liberty Avenue National Engineering Institute Aqueduct of Free Waters At the Castle of St. George

fisbarz Our last stop before crossing the Atlantic to the USA was Lisbon, the capital of Portu- gal, We enjoyed it both for its old world atmosphere and its fine modern sections. This was the first Occidental Metropolis that we had visited in many months, and its many large stores and small shops offered a lot to those of us who had not had our fill of souvenir shopping. Its wide paseos were liberally dotted with sidewalk cafes and western style night clubs. The city contains many parks, and on the hills above the city there are small mosaic sidewalks with borders of flowers where we could get a beautiful panoramic View of the country- side. After the discov- eries of the great Portuguese explorers, Lisbon became one of the wealthiest and most magni- ficent cities in the world. Diaster struck Lisbon on the morning of 1 November 1755. An earth- quake, followed by the great tidal wave and many gfiifires, literally upset and burned the city. About 50,000 people were killed in the first fifteen minutes, as tremors shook the lower city into a fire-lit cloud of dust and debris which was soon awash in a fifty foot tidal wave. It was the Maquis of Pombal who restored order out of chaos and eventually rebuilt the city much as it appears today.
