Most of them did the old wal- nut shell and pea trick. It was in Colombo, the capital of Ceylon, that many of us were able to take our first ride on an ele'phant. Ceylon was given a dominion status by the British in 1948, mainly due to the rise of Ceylonese nationalism dur- ing this century. We visited Kandy, the old capital of the Kandian Kings, and on the way could see elephants being watered in streams by the jungle, farmers plowing the rice fields with their water buffalo and primitive plows. All types of animals run wild in the jungle, and snake charmers with their straw baskets and flutes were willing. to put on a show for us for only a few rupees. Do you care to caress a cobra?
