PHCIHC PICH-UP Enroute Yokosuka from Midway, a seaman on board the USS ALGOL QAKA-545 lay in serious condition following an appendectomy. The AL- GOL had left the convoy in order to arrive in port early, but the physician who had performed the operation requested the services of a sur- geon, We were chosen to pick up a surgeon from the USS SKAGIT QAKA 1055 and deliver him to the ALGOL, which was already a day ahead of us. We picked up the doctor in our finest style, and then kicked up our speed 29 knots to catch up with the ALGOL. The seas picked up and the fog was as thick as tar. When we finally did rendezvous, we attemptedatrans- fer but the ALGOL's skipper considered the circumstances too dangerous and we quietly followed his ship into port, arriving in Yokosuka a day early. flvv' Q3

After leaving Panama and pausing for a couple of days in San Diego, we sailed onward to Pearl Harbor looking forward with great anticipation to this Isle of Golden Dreams. We could imagine ourselves swimming in the surf at Waikiki, lolling in the sun while beau- tiful Hawaiian maidens danced to the rhythms of old Hawaiian love songs, having a long cool one' on the veranda of the Royal Hawaiian or the Moana.... but much to our disappointment the weather was against us. The Navy landed and the rains came causing the sailors to take refuge in such non- descript haunts as Don the Beach- comber's. However, disregarding the rain, we all are looking forward to the next time when we can go hack to our fish and poi and enjoy a real Luau on the beach at Waikiki. ll!!!

fmt 6' fflffflflif foie B.O.Q., o1sPsNsAQV DMINISTRATION BLDG. FOLLOW TMS OAD. Midway Island...four square miles of coral, sand, sailors, and those buffoons of the mid-Pacific, the Gooney Birds. We only stopped long enough to take on a little fuel, but it gave us enough time to realize that the worst shore duty is not always better than the best sea duty. The antics of the Gooney birds were enough to keep us amused for the time we were in their domain. They walk around as if they own the island, and they might as well since they are well protected, Even the hottest Midway hot-rodders always stopped when aGooney bird crossed the road, and they took their own sweet time about it. To watch one spread his wings, take off with a run and tumble head over heels, only to do it over again until it was airborne left us in stitches. Its landings were worse! mIdW3Uz:1mz Home of Gooney Birds ST OFFICE . SU PPLYzl1Wr In case there might be some mis- understanding, the three pictures above are Midway Gooney Birds.
