Spanish is the official lang- uage of the country, but because of the influence of the canal, it wasn't necessary to know anything except English. Panaman- ian balboas and centavos were readily used along with dollars and cents, and in most of the shops the Kansas horse traders were able to come out even against the shrewd shopkeepers. Many of the members of the crew were old hands at shooting the bull, but this hand-to-hand combat was left to the matadors. When a cow was sent into the ring at the end of the fights, a couple of the hardier souls jumped into the ring to show the rest of us that they had learned a little about bull fighting during the afternoon. .
