After leaving Panama and pausing for a couple of days in San Diego, we sailed onward to Pearl Harbor looking forward with great anticipation to this Isle of Golden Dreams. We could imagine ourselves swimming in the surf at Waikiki, lolling in the sun while beau- tiful Hawaiian maidens danced to the rhythms of old Hawaiian love songs, having a long cool one' on the veranda of the Royal Hawaiian or the Moana.... but much to our disappointment the weather was against us. The Navy landed and the rains came causing the sailors to take refuge in such non- descript haunts as Don the Beach- comber's. However, disregarding the rain, we all are looking forward to the next time when we can go hack to our fish and poi and enjoy a real Luau on the beach at Waikiki. ll!!! The antics of the Gooney birds were enough to keep us amused for the time we were in their domain. Although we spent most of our time in the ports of Yokosuka and Sasebo, we had the opportunity to spend one weekend in Kobe, and those of us who were more inclined to travel found Yokohama, Tokio, Atami, Hakone, Nara, Kyoto, Arita, Nagasaki, and Hiroshima more or equally interesting. There was no limit to the amount of diversion that we found in our off hours. With the help of well-qualified native teachers, many learned to speak and even write a little of the Japanese language. Takusan and sukoshi became as much a part of our own language as big and little, and soon it was only second na- ture to walk into a restaurant or inn, order a Japanese meal, and settle down on the deck eat- ing with chopsticks. One of the highlights of our stay in Yokosuka was the ship's party held in the large dining room of the Komatsu Hotel. The hotel's own troupe of Geisha girls sang and danced old Japanese songs to the lilting rhy- thms of the samisen, a Japanese string instru- ment. We had not been in Japan more than a day before hearing that ichiban song on the Nipponese hit parade, Shina no Yoru, and not manydays passed before we too were singing or whistling the tune. Many of us learned to enjoy Japanese foods, the most pop- ular of which was Sukiyaki. Japanese bever- ages were also to our liking .... Nippon, Asahi, and sake. Of course, the thing that most of us will remember about Japan is that indescrib- able creature, Baby-san, whether she be named Youko, Teruyo, Suziko, or Suzy. Q, The hot War was over when we arrived in Korea, but the war of nerves was still on, The commies had a nasty habit of flying their MlGs close to the 38th parallel, which resulted in our going to GQ quite frequently and staying at condition Ill during most of our stay. Those of us who Went ashore found the buildings pock- marked from many months of bombardment by both UN and Communist forces ..... those that still stood. Both Inchon and Pusan were in pretty bad shape. Many of the civilians were living in smallg over-crowded shacks, hastily constructed to take care of the overflowing population. This, combined with the hot weather, and dust, made us feel a little sympathetic for the doggies on the beach. A V 1 I ........ .... -1- .,. . it . -U nm-g-:Im---N ml: -i........p1-A-... .. .. Ceylon was given a dominion status by the British in 1948, mainly due to the rise of Ceylonese nationalism dur- ing this century. We visited Kandy, the old capital of the Kandian Kings, and on the way could see elephants being watered in streams by the jungle, farmers plowing the rice fields with their water buffalo and primitive plows. All types of animals run wild in the jungle, and snake charmers with their straw baskets and flutes were willing. to put on a show for us for only a few rupees. Do you care to caress a cobra? This was the first Occidental Metropolis that we had visited in many months, and its many large stores and small shops offered a lot to those of us who had not had our fill of souvenir shopping. Its wide paseos were liberally dotted with sidewalk cafes and western style night clubs. The city contains many parks, and on the hills above the city there are small mosaic sidewalks with borders of flowers where we could get a beautiful panoramic View of the country- side. The strategic value of its site on the hills was recognized by the early settlers and Lisbon quickly became a chief city in Lusitania. Julius Caesar made the settlement a munici- pality about l4O B.C, The Moors were re- sponsible for the first strong fortifications after capturing the city in A.D. 713. Lisbon today is a modern looking city. Most of the buildings are in light, bright colors and have an unusual, attractive appearance. The city is impressive with spacious square, boule- vards, and fine public buildings. Overlooking the city of Lisbon and the Tagus River the ramparts of St George Castle Portugal, captured Lisbon from the Moors with the help of the French, English, and German Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land, In 1256, when King Alfonso III moved his court from Coimbra to Lisbon, the city became the capital of Portugal and began to gain rapidly in social and economic prestige. After the discov- eries of the great Portuguese explorers, Lisbon became one of the wealthiest and most magni- ficent cities in the world. Diaster struck Lisbon on the morning of 1 November 1755. An earth- quake, followed by the great tidal wave and many gfiifires, literally upset and burned the city. About 50,000 people were killed in the first fifteen minutes, as tremors shook the lower city into a fire-lit cloud of dust and debris which was soon awash in a fifty foot tidal wave. It was the Maquis of Pombal who restored order out of chaos and eventually rebuilt the city much as it appears today.
