LOWREY SCHOOL CONCLUDES A QUARTER OF A CENTURY Twenty-five years ago The Harvey H. Lowrey School began to serve the people of the community. It was a new elementary and junior high school in a new and rapidly growing center with a complete unit to care for those with special problems and afflict- afflictions. Thus, The Lowrey School has evolved from the planner's chart to the bui1der's reality to be concluded in a service which has extended through a severe depression into the throes of a world war. In the post-war period, services of the school were extended to include the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. The beautiful stone building stands as a monument to its builders, dedicated to free public education. But its real significance lies in the hearts, minds, and service of its pupils, faculty, and staff. Many people have attended Lowrey School. Some Lowrey students have sacrificed their lives for their country. Others have contri- buted their services in a variety of ways. The building is a beautiful structure, but the school will continue to live only in the lives of those who have served it and in the lives of those who have been served by it. May we all dedicate ourselves to the never finished tasks about us. May we serve and build better wherever we are because of our association with the HARVEY H. LOWREY SCHOOL. Merwin A. A This loyalty of teachers to the school gives evidence that they not only have love for the profession, but also that they wish to help democracy in its never ending struggle to educate all its children May they be happy in the knowledge that the ideas which they have helped us acquire these many years will be carried into the world wherever we go. But no one knows what it stands for or how this idea originated. When our country was in the midst of a great depression, a government-employed W.P.A. worker, who was skilled in the art of sculpturing, carved a statue fortunate in obtaining this statue through the efforts of Mr. jach, former a the idea of using the polar bear as the school emblem. Since that time, th significance and has, in a sense, been in a long hibernation. One day, w ' th Art instructor, spied the statue of the bear with its nose pointed toward in mind he went to Mr. Lewis and asked what could be done to renovate Lewis very generously replied, Anything you want to do. With administrative approval the real work began. He scoured the bea r until it became many shades lighter. Then the school carpenters were asked to build a pedestal for this statue. Row 1- Robert Noles, Pat Gale, jean juday, Neva Silberston, Mary Klassen, Betty Neal, Frank Franchi. Row 2- Chuck Bailey, jerry Kornell, jerry Trimark, Daniel Hockett, john Allen, Mr. Reincke. of a cub polar bear. Our school was thletic director, who promoted e polar bear has lost some of its hile in study hall, Mr. Leyrer, our e corner. With this forlorn image and make this statue presentable. Mr. They built a beautiful stand out of solid oak. Now the bear was ready for presentation. But what of its back- ground? At this point the Student Coun- cil took over. A committee of two, con- sisting of jerry Kornell and jean juday, set to work. They contacted everyone who might know something of this statue, teachers, the administration, and the school board members. But they could unearth very few facts. What they did discover was printed in a bulletin for the homerooms. With this bulletin in mind a citizen- ship meeting was called. Representatives from all senior high homerooms were present. jerry Kornell briefed them on what had been going on. Then Mr. Lewis asked that these people talk to their home rooms about having respect and pride in this emblem. Mr. Leyrer and Mr. Reincke also spoke on the pride that was needed, not only in our school but in ourselves, to keep this bear in proper condition. Homeroom was extended five minutes purposely to give the homeroom rep- resentatives a chance to put across this important point. The Student Council is proud to carry on the tradition of the Lowrey Polar Bear.
