We came from rural schools, and for the first time we were seeing what a modern school with complete facilities for education and recreation offered us. Knowing few people we were fearful, and we were worried about making new friends. Of course, we suffered the usual hazing by upperclassmen, and there were embarrassing mishaps our first weeks of school. Soon we settled down and enjoyed the routine of high school life. In our freshman and sophomore years we prepared ourselves to assume our role of upper- classmen in educational and athletic activities. During these years the class presented two dances. In October, 1948, we gave our first high school dance, the Autumn Nocturne.” Our sophomore year found the class presenting the First Sadie Hawkins Day Dance.” Frizes were awarded for the best Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner. A precedent was set by the girls, who invited their partners. It was unfortunate that this traditional dance has not been continued, for this was the first and last of its kind. During the sophomore year, the boys began making names for themselves in sports; many of them earned their varsity letters. We became juniors with thoughts of our senior year and graduation. The officers devised ways and means of making money. Besides presenting the usual dances, the class decided to take con- cessions at the baseball games. Our first dance of the junior year was the home-coming dance, The Snowball, at which Juanita Merriman and Donn Hamas, of the class of 1951, were crowned king and queen. It had a big turnout, and everyone enjoyed himself. The class voted to change the J-Hop date to February 10, and made plans to center it around Valentine’s Day. On May 4, the class sponsored a record dance. Square dancing was featured with a professional caller. May 27, a dismal rainy Sunday, was a day to be remembered. The class held its first picnic at Plymouth Park. Eating, playing baseball, volleyball, and tennis, and even wading in the nearby creek was part of this event. The day after the picnic the election of senior officers was held. We entered the senior year. The Witches Whirl,” held in October started the year’s senior activities. Many seniors elected Annual Staff and started the 1952 Futorian for printing in April. The Lowrey Light Staff became inspired to the extent that the paper was doubled in size and contents. With the graduation of the January class, we began to realize that June was not far off. Gradu- ation pictures were taken, and the class members purchased their graduation invitations. Plans for the Senior Prom and Senior Week were being made. On April 18, The Sock Hop” was presented. Soon the hustle and bustle of graduation was truly upon us. We were measured for our caps and gowns, and we began trading name cards and pic- tures with our classmates. The last weeks of school were approaching, and we were eagerly awaiting our week of class activities. During this week swimming parties, weiner roasts, and a boat trip were held. Senior Day was especially fun, and the seniors turned out for it. Senior Week was climaxed with the Senior Prom on June 6. The Crystal Ballroom of the Fort Shelby Hotel was the perfect setting for the last formal social event before graduation. Frank Netting’s Orchestra was chosen for this occasion. These last few weeks had been the perfect climax to four happy years spent in study and play together. We were leaving Lowrey for the last time. The night of graduation arrived, and we walked solemnly down the aisle to the strains of the music—Pomp and Circumstance. Some of us will further our education, others have already obtained work, some have plans of marriage, and many of the fellows have already had their futures planned for them in the service of our country. We have enjoyed our four years at Lowrey; we leave reluctantly. We look to the future and hope that we will do our parts to fulfill our roles of making this world of ours a better place in which to live. HISTORY YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU” Row 1: Donna Murray. This organization is the link between the students and the administration and exists for the best interests of both. During the past year many things, both large and small, have been undertaken by the Council. It brought the stu- dents together by sponsoring, early in September, the first school function of the year, the “Kick-Off,” activity dance. It bolstered school spirit and served the school by organiz- ing the sale of book jackets and booster pins. A book of events, in which to record the year’s important functions, was purchased. It requisitioned and received a bulletin case for the posting of current activities. Along with the Student Council's regular duty of hall supervision., it took the responsibility of the cafeteria clean-up. Perhaps one of the most outstanding achievements that the Student Council has recently promoted is the Inter- school Visitation Program. The first visit was to Ecorse High. At the second meeting we played host to our neighbor schools with the Student Council actively participating. For the first time, the Council found itself financially able to assist in the publication of our annual by a dona- tion of $100.00. The introduction of the idea to present a plaque to the school organization that played the most im- portant part towards promoting school spirit was new this year. The Council has been a vital force in promoting the wel- fare of our school. It is not a club, but the most important organization in the school. The Student Council provides the first opportunity to learn citizenship by participation. It is not organized to rule the school; it is organized to represent, to speak for, and to provide leadership for the student body. It attempts to harmonize all the agencies within the school in a total program for the best interests of the school.
