Text from Pages 1 - 100 of the 1951 volume:

4 '1 i 'W ff ,r . - ,f THE QUILL Foreword The years pass by as if they were days. And in their passing, the memory of our merry hours spent at W. T. H. S. grows dim. Familiar faces grow faint in the shadows of forgetfulness. It is their hope that you will remember this volurne. If it brings to mind the happy moments spent at W. T. H. S., if it refreshes your memory the companions of yesterday, if it serves as a link in the chain of your life, then the supreme purpose of the staff has been fulfilled. Z Dedication The Quill of 1951 is presented as a record 5,,,Q'fii.7 1'-A'A , . I ' 2 .m y ri fi. L of Student life at Washburn Township High School. It is intended to serve as a lifetime memory of the Senior Class -- of those who are leaving the school this year, many perhaps to serve their country. May this, the Quill of 1951, fulfill its purpose, and bring happy memories to our boys, as they seek freedom on land and sea, and peace and contentment to our girls who keep the home fires burning. To all those former students of W. T. H. S. who are now in the service of our country: To a soldier in battle scarred Korea, to our boys on an island in the Pacific, to a sailor on a flat-top in the blue Mediterranean, to a flyer in the sky over Europe, to all of them everywhere in the world - we dedicate this book. 3 Q91 -91 N, lr :Nm l m 1, .,..,,g ,,:,,, 2 , 1. ii i J ,,. A Q L ' i Qi t. fl, Bruce Minch We wish to introduce to you another Senior of Washburn High School. Although Bruce is a Senior, he is not as well acquainted with the student body as we would like for him to be. Bruce has been handicapped since birth and has been unable to attend high school. He was born April 18, 1932 in Washburn, Illinois, and has continued to reside here. Although he has been unable to attend school and take part in school activities-- with the help of teachers in his home--he has broadened in his education and has a scholastic standing of A throughout his grade and high school years. Mr. H. B. Ireland taught Bruce while he was in the grades. His high school teachers were: Mrs. F. S. Zeller, Miss Marie Shafer, Mr. Harry D. Campbell, Mr. George Brumrnet, Mrs. Bernadine Jones, and Mr. E. R. Jones. He is a very enthusiastic baseball fan, and the Cubs are a great favorite of his. He also spends much of his leisure time listening to the radio and reading: therefore he has a very broad view of world affairs. He likes to crochet and is very skillful at this work. He likes to listen to musical programs on the radio, and he attends shows quite frequently at the theaters. He is looking forward to warm, sunny days when he can get on his three-wheel bike and visit his neighbors and chat with them. He loves to go boat- ing with his parents, and he is also a lucky fisherman. He is taking a course in Driver Training, with Mr. Jones, our high school principal, as teacher. Next fall Bruce is planning to take a course in Jewelry at Peoria. If he likes the work, he will probably follow this profession throughout his life. May we say the best of luck to you, Bruce. Z2 History of Class of '51 In September, 1947, twenty-three green Freshmen entered the hallowed halls of the Washburn Township High School. We were piloted through out first year by our officers: Danny Schroeder, Presidentg Kenneth Snider, Vice-President, Mary Gardner, Secretaryg and Joyce Faw, Treasurer. Miss Clara Reeves was our class sponsor. All of us re-assembled for our Sophomore year but five members: Marshall Bernius, Dean Kizer, Stewart Herron, Mary Nurse, and Margaret Hart. During the year we lost Alfred Schierer but were joined by Joyce Safford. Knowing that we had a Prom to give the following year, we sold coke and candy. Our officers that year were Gerry White, President, Loyd Damerell, Vice-President, Shirley Zenzen, Secretaryg and Mary Gardner, Treasurer. Mr. Snow was our class sponsor. Our Junior year was one of our busiest. We sold tickets at some of the con- cessions during the Fall Festivalg sponsored the Christmas danceg and presented the play, The Nutt Family under the direction of Miss Schriver. We entertained the Seniors with a banquet at the high school and a dance at the Log Cabin on May 5, 1950, with music by Larry Lonny. Ray Bannon joined us only to leave early in the spring. The officers that year were Mary Gardner, President, Loyd Damerell, Vice-President: Shirley Zenzen, Secretaryg and Gerry White, Treasurer. Miss Vers Huttenburg was our class advisor. Then we reached our last year and gained the cherished name Seniors , Our officers elected to guide us through our final year were: Danny Schroeder, Presidentg Vera Kemp, Vice-Presidentg Joyce Safford, Secretaryg and Joyce Faw, Treasurer. Our sponsors for the year were Mr. and Mrs. Jones. During our last flight we held our Senior play, sponsored the Homecoming Dance and became ex- cited about our glorious Senior trip. Z3 Senior Class Prophecy The day had at last arrived when we, the St. Louis Cardinals, were to go on tour. As we passed through Chicago, I remembered that one of my friends, Kenneth Snider, had become a big wheel in the Texaco Company. I called him on the phone and since he had become a man about town , he was quite anxious to show me the bright lights. We agreed to meet at the Mecca that evening. As we were seated at the table, the lights dimmed for the floor show. Imagine my surprise to see Joyce Safford featured as the most popular night club singer in the city! During the course of our conversation, he mentioned that Vera Kemp was now history Professor at Northwestern University. He also said that he was quite surprised one day when he went with his wife to pick out her new spring wardrobe, to find Shirley Zenzen working as a model. We talked of old times in Washburn and he mentioned a recent letter from a farmer friend, Eugene Knoblauch, typed of course by his wife, Sandy. They told of the wonderful improvements made in Washburn. Ruth Wallace and Doris Reinkenberger are assisting Dr. Sarrniento in his new hospital. Jo Laible is min- ister of the new Presbyterian church which has just recently been rebuilt after the other burned. Through the influence of Senator Mary Gardner it was possible to get an ap- propriation from the state to build an annex to the school building to house the kinder- garten department headed by Gerry White. They told, too, of seeing pictures of Suzanne Thierer and her prize winning Chester Whites, in farm magazines. After a pleasant evening with Ken, I rushed back to the hotel, collected my bags, and hurried to the airport where I joined my teammates for our flight west. I cou1dn't believe my eyes when we were greeted by stewardess, Joyce Faw. Our plane soared westward and we were a little alarmed when they informed us that we were to make an unscheduled stop at North Platt, Nebraska. We were advised that we would have several hours wait while our plane was being repaired. I strolled down the broad main street and whom should I meet but my old friend, Sam Kline, attired in a ten gallon hat, boots, and spurs. He urged me to come.see his modern ranch and another classmate, the former Lenilda Beltramea, his foreman J'oe's wife. I was reluctant to leave their hospitality, but returned to the field just as the re- pairs were finished and we journeyed on into California. As we reached our hotel and passed through the lobby, someone rushed up to me and here was Loyd Damerell, just checking out of the hotel with the rest of the Globe Trotters. We had only a. few minutes, but he did tell me not to miss the eight o'c1ock program over KOLB on which Diana Hattan was starring as Our Miss Brooks . He mentioned tog, that Alice pacey and her staff of trainers were now busy at Santa Anita. As I glanced down at my specially made watch. a gift fI'O1'Tl 8 f01'1'r1e1' C1aSSmate, Bruce Mingh, I realized that 1 had only a few minutes in which to reach the stadium for our biggest game of the year. 0.....,,g, Z4 n -6' Last Will and Testament We, the Senior Class of 1951, of the Washburn Township High School, in the County of Woodford and State of Illinois, being of sound mind and good memory, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament. A11 the upperclassrnen Were once green Freshmen toog So if they try to tease you, Just do as you ought to do. We were Sophomores too, Lets not forget: lf we hadn't studied, We would be yet. Juniors too, obey the rules, Education comes from schoolsg Study hard from day to day, Then you will graduate next May. Of course we learned English and typing, And how to divide and add: But that's not all, That makes life glad or sad. We know when Miss Schriver picks up the yardstick, She doesn't mean to measure the deskg And when Mr. Jones says come tothe office, It's not to sit down and rest. When Mrs. Jones gives us that disgusted look, It's because we have neglected to open a bookg When Mr. Condit' says, Your farming will not pay, It isn't because its a rainy day. When Mrs. Ross says, Your project is due, It is too late for you to dog Or when the drums sound in the hall, It's Mr. Baker's war cry, that is all. I-lark! that noise you hear, ls Mr. Brurrunent's typewriters as they purrg And that thundering noise on the gym, Is Eihausen's echo through the din. But all in all, we've had lots of fun, And just to think its almost done, When back on the years we look, We think we've learned more than just from books THE SENI ORS 35 0 4 Um . Student Councll 'ggi The Washburn High School Student Council consists of seven active members. They are as follows: Sponsor, Mr. Jones, President, Danny Schroederg Vice-President, Sandy Rae: and Secretary-Treasurer, Mary Gardner. The class representatives are: Freshman, George Adamig Sophomore, Don Scrivnerg Junior, Dick Beschornerg and Senior, Loyd Damerell. These council members are all good students, and take part in many outside activities. The council, thus far, has had a very successful year. They have helped improve our school in many ways. Some of these are: purchasing dishes and silverware for the hot lunch program, giving awards to outstanding students, and the purchase of a water fountain which is yet to come. Everything that goes on in the school, must first be brought before the council, and is then discussed by the member's for we want everything at W. T. H. S. to be good and fair, and the council does much to make it so. Our student council is a member of the State Association, and plans to send a representative to the Student Council Convention in Chicago this spring. 37 Boys' Glee Club The life of a music teacher never becomes dull when he is faced with such a group of singers as Mr. Baker finds at his Boys' Glee Club practices. Under the skilled direction of our advisor and chapter mother, Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Gardner, we have been progressing and advancing very rapidly. 'Helpin' hands have been reaching to the P. T. A. as the F. H. A. girls tended their children at the monthly meetings. 'Servin' the Lions Club Christmas Dinner and the Board of Education Dinner, were fun, also profitable. 'Co-operatin' in the F. H. A. began the first week of school when we had a joint party with the F. F. A. Later in the year delegates were sent to the House of Delegates meeting, National Convention, and State Leadership Camp. At the House of Delegates meeting Mrs. Judson Faw was elected sectional mother. At State Leadership'C amp our Publicity book won second place in our district. These two things made us very happy. 'Givin' gifts of kindness was one of our projects, as we contributed gifts to the World Christmas Festival, Foreign Homemaking Class, and a needy family in our community. We also gave of our talents to the Junior and Senior Woman's Clubs. 'Entertainin' children at the Christmas Party was a simple matter as old Kris Kringle, with his bells and hearty laughter, took all orders for Christmas. 'Learnin' has been play to us, as we listened to Mrs. Favarro give an interesting talk on wrapping Christmas gifts. Mary Ryan, our state vice-president, told us in a very interesting talk, what our F. H. A. chapter should mean to us and we were taught many interesting things about foreign countries, when Mrs. Blanche Hawk spoke to us on her native country, England. 'Honorin' was a privilege we enjoyed bestowing on our mothers at our style show and tea. Both Mothers and Fathers were recognized at the F. F. A. and F. H. A. family night. 'Organizin' a F. H. A. alumni was a new experience to us. We feel we will profit from it in the coming years. With the help and co-operation of our Advisor, President, and Chapter Mother: we, the Washburn Chapter of Future Homemakers of America, have had a very good year. We all enjoyed working together, and because of this, we came out very successfully. FIRST ROW: J. Goista, H. Kline, I. Lamphere, M. Bond, S. Rae, A. Fitch, I. Laible, L. Turner, S. Hahn, W. They made a very fine showing. Some two weeks later Ray Beltramea, Bob Rediger, and Floyd Bannan attended Leadership Camp at Camp Woconda near Peoria. After the camp was over most everyone was settling down to work. The Juniors and Seniors studied farm management, farm accounting, the swine enterprise, beef enterprise, and shop work. The Freshmen and Sophomores were orientated on F. F. A. and values of Agriculture, then went to the swine enterprise, beef enterprise, dairy, sheep, and farm shop. The highlight, of course, was initiation from the Freshmen Greenhands into chapter farmers. Eating raw oysters, and kissing the book with flour on top was quite a sight to behold. T' 4 iso A pest contest was held to aid in a community service program and the Freshmen took the honors away from the upperclassmen by doubling the score. John Gerber, Ray Beltramea, Bob Rediger, and George Adami took top honors at the Section 5 grain judg- ing contest. At the time of the writing we have not had our dairy and livestock contests, but it is hoped that the teams can make as good a showing as they did the year before. The family night potluck for the F. F. A. boys and their parents and F. H. A. girls and their parents seems to always fill the gymnasium as well as the stomachs. Pruning grapes and fruit trees in the spring is quite a delight for some students. The summer picnic is one of the most enjoyable activities of the year. ! Led by our cap- able coach, Fred Eihausen. We won by a margin of 31 points. Following this victory we were defeated by East Peoria 47 to 40. After this defeat we bounced right back into the wins column and won the next eleven games in a row. During Christmas vacation the Mid-C ounty Tournament was held in Lacon. The Wildcats won second place in this tournament. In the final game Walnut defeated Washburn by the score of 49 to 38. Then fate suddenly hit the team and they lost the next four games. Washburn's opening game in the Woodford County Tournament was played against a fighting Roanoke squad. After going into two overtimes, Roanoke came out victorious over our Wildcats. This gave the Washburn quintet a record of 12 wins and 7 loses. After the County Tournament the Washburn five lost Kenneth Snider due to illness. This weakened the team and they lost to Elmwood. We lost our Homecoming game to Benson, 51 to 46. Then we came right back to beat Roanoke and Low Point. In the District Tournament, Washburn was pitted against Roanoke. We were again defeated in the last half by 38-36. Metamora went on to win the tournament from Benson in the final game. This left the Washburn team of 195051951 with a record of 14 wins and 11 loses.
