Text from Pages 1 - 288 of the 1983 volume:

MIZZEN FLAG HONORS — Flying above the body of the ship, showing to the outside world the true quality of the student body, the honors awarded to LHS students contin- ually emphasize the high level of achievement possible for those who are willing to put forth the effort. Scholorship, citizenship, athletics, musical and dramatic talent. In all of these areas, LHS students continue to demonstrate a commitment to excellence. 1IVSNIVIA1 ACTIVITIES — As the mainsail of the ship billows out to drive the ship forward, so do the special activities of the school propel the spirit of the stu- dent body. Several events like dances, special pro- jects like Homecoming and school contests, plus demanding groups like band and chorus spark the school calendar and enliven the daily round of classes and homework. Like seasonings on ordinary food, the activities add savor to school life. 5 TEACHERS FACULTY - The figurehead is considered to be one of the most important parts of the boat even though in size it is actually one of the smallest. It is known to bring luck and ward off evil spirits as the sailors travel through high seas. Teachers and faculty members re- late to the figurehead in several ways. They are one of the most im- portant parts of the school, even though compared to the whole school, they represent only a small part. Without the faculty of this school most students would never achieve the knowledge and abilities needed to travel the high seas of life. Just as the figurehead is an impor- tant part of the boat to every sailor, so the faculty members become an important part of the school to every student. SPORTS — Like a shining emblem, LHS athle- tic teams attract attention and admiration, giv- ing a focus to students energies and loyalties. 1982 saw the successful start-up of two new sports at Lowndes High. Wrestling and a girls softball team that amazed its fans by taking the division??? Championship in its first season, added greatly to the luster of LHS sports. Shielding students from the boredom of a nar- row curriculum, the football, basketball, base- ball, softball, and track teams provide color and excitement for the progress of the Viking Ship. e SHIELD BOAT HULL CLASSES — Carrying the true cargo of Lowndes High School, the varied classes provide the ba- sic training necessary for young vikings to enter the advet world as contributing citizens. Students may concentrate their studies on solid academic preparation, lead- ing to institutions of higher learn- ing, or focus on vocational pur- suits which will prepare them for occupational fulfilment immedi- ately following graduation. Spe- cial enrichment offerings ranging from creative stitchery to the study of various art forms give balance to the classes — the hull of the Viking ship. OARS CLUBS — Theater, language, careers, politics, commu- nity service, journalism, sports support. The lables only hint at the variety of endeavors available for pursuit by LHS students. Participation in school clubs allow for the kind of personal growth and maturation which results from the taking on and fulfillment of responsibilities. In addition club members achieve a sense of community which, along with individual de- velopment, move the members towards better citizen- ship. LHS clubs — the Oars of the Viking Ship — propel the ship to new horizons. 13 RUDDER L I RUDDER — No one student at Lowndes High School can say that he hasn't needed help at one time or another with the choosing of his courses and the un- derstanding of his graduation requirements. Counce- lors are like rudders of our boat; they help guide us through all types of seas and weather. 15 MIZZEN FLAG LIKE THE MIZZON FLAGS, OUR HONOR STUDENTS FLY HIGH ABOVE THE DECK, FLAUNTING THE PRIDE OF THE VI- KINGS. top left: Bill Sears welcomes everyone to the honors pro- gram. top right: Leo Saguiguit receives the valedictorian award, middle right: Penny Shaw receives the salutorian award, bottom right: Robert Cairns receives the Guidance De- partment award. 18 19 bottom left: Kent Coppage receives award from Mr. Troy as most outstanding senior. top right: Col. Friends, relatives, fans come out to see the best of the best. 24 SPORTS BANQUETS DEDICATION RALPH COUNCIL The 1983 Munin is proud to dedicate this book to Ralph Council. He had worked as an administrator at Lowndes High for many years and is now the assistant superintendent of the Lowndes County school system. In Memorian A.B. SONNY MARTIN It was my priviledge to serve on the Board of Education during the last fourteen years of Mr. Martins time in office. He was a man of courage and strength as we worked through many trials and tribulations of the Lowndes school system. His concern and purpose was always to serve the best interest of all the young peo- ple of the county and to provide the best education possible for all. His dedicated service will have great effect on the Lowndes school system for many years. George L. Moulton Chairman Lowndes County Board of Education In Honor Of Mr. Martin WE MISS HIM . . .
