The Cover Our legendary Viking was imprisoned by a seed of this mighty oak tree over 2,000 years ago. From the majestic tree our Viking was released by a master craftsman. Now the magnificent, bold sculpture guards the halls of Lowndes High and is an ever present reminder of our proud Viking Legend. XIII 1979 MUNIN Profile of a Viking To be a Viking is to be CARING, EXPRESSING. WORKING, GROWING, STRIVING, and FULFILLING We, as the Vikings of the past, have all these traits. To be Lowndes High Vikings, we have to be special people with distinct traits. We all have these traits, but we are individuals as well. We do what we do in a way that no one else can We are tight. Real tight. That makes us strong. There has never been a mountain too high to climb or a sea too wide to navigate for a Viking. We are proof of this strength today Together, there is nothing we cannot seek, nothing we cannot accomplish. We, like the ancient Vikings, will not be stopped short of our goals. 2 Vikings come in many different shapes and sizes with different thoughts and ideas. Far Lower Left — Salina Layton shows that Vikings are spirited. Far Upper Left — Reaching the highest potential is characteristic of a Viking as shown by Ronnie Shackleford. Lower Left — Gloria Roberts stands tall and proud in her Viking-Plowboy attire Lower Center — The profile of a Viking becomes a stern, solemn gaze as Tim Martin achieves the fifties look. Lower Right — Characteristic of all Vikings is the ability to be a leader as is true with Joy McClellan. Left — The Mightiest of all Vikings, Carlton Adams represents honesty and integrity. Below — Vikings are strong as symbolized by Ronnie Adkins and Steve Thomas 3 Caring for One Another As the Vikings of yesterday, we care for one another with love and devotion. Every phase of life requires a closeness between us. This closeness can be achieved by caring for each other in a way that only a Viking can truly understand. Vikings know that through our love for each other, great things can be achieved. By working together we become close; closeness allows us to grow together. The double bond of growth and closeness makes an invincible Viking. We are strong because we care for one another. We will forever be close. Caring is a trait all Vikings possess Extreme Left — Through caring, strong bonds of friendship are formed as shown by Brenda Roffe and Lisa Thomas Lower Middle Left — Sunnie O Neal knows that caring for our school has made us number one. Lower Left — Carne Sue Hunmcutt and Tammy Hargrove are proof that school life brings us closer together Middle Left— Alan Culpepper lends a sympathetic ear to Rhonda Moore Left — In our caring we develop many different relationships 5 Expressing Ourselves A Viking expresses himself and his moods in many ways. Vikings of the past were brave warriors, yet they were artistic craftsmen. Like our mighty predecessors, we do not live just to exist. We have a purpose. Expressing ourselves and our lifestyles is a part of this purpose There is no such thing as a demure Viking because we are rowdy but considerate We are intellectual but modest When we win, we win with style, and when we lose, we lose with dignity. There is no other way for a Viking. He must be realistic but at the same time imaginative. Yes. we express ourselves but only in the most upstanding way because all Viking incentives are honorable. 6 Expression makes up a large part of a Viking's personality. Far Lower Left — The Lowndes High Administration is number one when it comes to supporting their teams. Far Upper Left — Expression and excitement are one and the same for a Viking. Extreme Lower Left — An expression of poise is seen as Becky Griffin and Vicky George perform at halftime. Lower Right — Lisa Thomas expresses great pride at being a Viking-Plowboy. Lower Left — Originality, even in dress, is a Viking quality as shown by Brenda Roffe. Below — A Viking has confidence and Joy McClellan and Craig White have no trouble showing it. Left— Patriotic and loyal. Sarah Long shows respect for Lowndes High. 7 Working Together In days of old and new, Vikings are unique because of their togetherness. By working together, Vikings have accomplished many tasks and conquered many foes. Vikings work well together because we are unified. As one. we win, accomplish, succeed, and prosper With our unity we have impressed many opponents. Through team work Lowndes High has become powerful. Our legendary strength exists because we are Vikings working together. As a mighty team, we will always pull together in triumph. Working together has brought us to where we are now and will carry us further in the future Far Left — Through skill and teamwork, the Viking cheerleaders tower above all others Far Lower Left — Danny Silverthorne contributes to the blood drive. We do not flinch. We are stern, but we are wise enough to allow room for change and growth. This growth makes us legendary Vikings n 12 Striving for Accomplishment Through persistence and perseverance, a Viking, old and new, strives for accomplishment. Through this year we have worked, and we have accomplished Accomplishment does not come without hard work, and we as Vikings know it. The proof lies in that this was a year of great accompishment for Lowndes High. We always give our all in everything we do. We may often be hindered, but we will never be stopped. We are not quitters Vikings are always striving to succeed Right — Lowndes High students strive to excel in all facets of school life. T m Martin concentrates on his work Below — Chuck Jones fights for a victory Below Right — Angel Parrish strives to arouse true Viking Spirit. As We Fulfill Our Dreams Just as the Vikings of olden days set sail for new lands, we, the Vikings of today, reach for new horizons as we fulfill our dreams. There will never be a goal too high for us to reach because we have a faith and hope deep within. In fulfilling our dreams we have made our presence known We never stop looking up or reaching out This desire to reach new heights makes us strong because we will not accept a step backward We will continue dreaming, and we will continue to fulfill these dreams, as each year passes, we gain more momentum and nothing can get in our way now The future is ours u Fulfilling dreams is a part of everyday life at Lowndes High. Grew, and Strived in Fulfilling our Dreams. We have set many goals and reached them; in the process we grew. CLASSES CLASSES 34 SENIORS: CLASS OF 79 As seniors of 79 we had a lot to offer Lowndes High during our three years here, and we more than fulfilled our responsibilities as a class during our stay here. As the spiritual backbone of the student body, we have led Lowndes High through the bad times as well as the good. We have become a very close-knit group of friends, more so than many preceding classes here. Our mutual respect for each other is only exceeded by the undying friendships that we have formed Though graduation is a beginning, an end will come to many things that we as seniors have come to expect and look forward to Gone will be the talk and the sharing of minds that we partake in every day. as well as the daily routine that we will soon grow to cherish in our memories But. our friendship will live on. For as long as we remember each other, the senior class will live in the minds of each and every one of us. The class of 79 is not a thing of the past, but rather a permanent part of all our lives Thank you. Robbie Spinney President. Sr. Class Right — Robbie Spinney — President. I extend a special welcome to the parents and grandparents present tonight Tonight's ceremony marks the culmination of twelve years in school. It represents the individ- ual efforts of four hundred and ninety students But most important, tonight's program symboli- cally inaugurates the transition from one stage of our lives to one of even greater resportsbility, that of adults. Once again, I offer those here a sincere welcome to the graduation of the class of 1979. I am overjoyed to be able to realize my goal of graduation after many years of hard work Graduation is the fruit of all our efforts, and its occasion is one that is anticipated and looked forward to by all of us. but it is also with a great deal of sadness that I stand here before my fellow classmates All graduating classes feel a special unity, a common bond that holds the class together, however, we graduates feel that our class is special Special because we are unusu- ally close to each other We are a very emotional class, and we have shared our good times as well as our bad As a result, we have contributed much to one another and have formed bonds of friendship that could never be broken We are all true friends who mutually love and respect each other The closeness of the graduating class can- not be described nor interpreted in words. I can only say that I've never been a part of a body of people so unified as we are So as I stand here before my friends and fellow graduates for the last time. I would like to take this opportunity to turn to them and address them Well, alot of us were wondering if we d ever make it. but we did We did it together as a class, and we had a good time along the way I'm at a loss to describe how I feel towards you who have meant so much to me As we think back upon the pep rallies, studying, football games, final exams, and now our final day together as a class, we ll remember our good times together, and we ll remember how good things were when we were together at Lowndes High But above all else my friends, remember this time — our graduation, for it is truly our finest hour Thank you. Robbie Spinney TO REACH TOMMOROW’S GOALS. FAREWELL Our high school career is now over With diplomas in hand, we are ready to begin new lives, whether in col- lege or in the business world We’ve all grown together here at Lowndes High for three years, three memora- ble years Together we've grown, learned, experi- enced. and shared After tonight the ties between each of us will never again be the same For a while they may seem to remain unchanged, but as each of us goes our own way. friendships will fade, people will be forgotten, and all that will remain will be memories. Memories of our good times in high school Memories of the past which will become so important in the future William Wordsworth once said of memories. ‘Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower; We will grieve not. rather find strength in what remains behind.” As we move our tassles from the left of our caps to the right and become true graduates, let me say to each of you. be yourself, go into the world and succeed Be the best and always remember Lowndes High Because we will never gather as such again.
