There’s no doubt in our minds. Anyway we look at it. Lowndes High Plowboys are No. 1. We’ve got that No. 1 Plowboy spirit . . . winning is the name of our game. We’ve got a great student body . . . that likes to Party! Along with the fun, we can get down to the business of learning and explor- ing. Life for a Plowboy isn’t all excite- ment. Some days we have to do some plain living. Through everything, Plowboys stick together. All for one and one for all. We're proud of our school . . . We’re proud of ourselves . . . And we’re proud to be Plowboys. 2 3 WE'RE NO. 1 From athletic competition to classroom activities or anything we do. we're No. 1. In the year of 1977-78, the Lowndes High Plowboys have put it together by combining the spirit and the school pride that is needed to be No. 1. 4 PARTY Party to a Plowboy is having fun, and that’s what we do when we get together. Remember the Valdosta Pep Rally, Senior Day, Homecoming, and the Junior-Senior Prom? It’s the Plowboy Spirit that makes the party really happen. ... 7 SPIRIT. . . That great Plowboy Spirit has gotten us where we are today. The spirit of the stu- dent body and our athletic teams has brought us a county championship and a state championship. We’ve got that win- ning spirit that reigns over everything we do. 8 LEARNING AND EXPLOR- ING . . . That Plowboy Pride is seen in every area of learning. The learn- ing process always doesn’t take place in a desk or even in the school building. Whether it’s too- tin' a flute or sanding a gun rack, learning takes place all over Plow- boy Country. PLAIN LIVING Let’s face it . . . Plowboys are great at everything they do . . . even Plain living. To a stranger a school day would not appear very exciting. But a Plowboy can add that special touch that makes everything worth- while. 13 FRIENDS. . . Together we work; together we play; together we become friends. Plowboy Pride is based on friendship. With this friendship we can band together to conquer anything. PLOWBOY PRIDE • • • We’ve got the spirit and the enthusiasm! It’s this combination that makes a Plowboy happen. Through this spirit we develop pride in our school and in our- selves. That’s what Plowboy Pride is all about. 16 ADMINISTRATION These are our leaders. They guide us during our short stay at L.H.S. These leaders teach us to take pride in ourselves and what we do. Their guidance is influencing our future and we will always remember their contin- uous efforts. A. B. Teachers do not thrive on grading papers, punishing those who are misbehaving, or going over home- work. Rather, they look forward to the weekend, holidays, and the sum- mer vacation as much as students. Teachers are not evil creatures who hope every student fails. They care just as much about the students’ grades as the student himself. Because they care, they go over material time and time again for the ones who do not listen or stay after school all those unnecessary hours for the student who is behind. Many teachers give of themselves and it is time we give them some credit. FAYEALTMAN English, B.S. 21 OLIVIA BETHEA Counselor, B.A., M.Ed. ALICE BIZZEL Special Ed., B.F.A.. M.Ed. The pride of the Class of 1979, the Junior Class Cabi- net, journeyed through a most prosperous year in 1977- 78. Under the guidance of our sponsor, Mr. Herring, the Junior Class accomplished much enroute to presenting the 1978 Junior-Senior Prom. To raise money for the Prom, the Junior Class sponsored a plowboy victory dance, car washes, and candy sales. In addition, the Junior Class exhibited their presence at Lowndes High in the areas of school spirit, responsi- bility, and leadership. This year’s Cabinet members were fantastic; their diligence was only exceeded by their love for one another and for our great school. The Class Cab- inet was more than anyone expected. The examples they set for the school were admirable. These examples mir- rored their own qualities. The stadium is packed with excitement, enthusiasm, and tension. In the past, we had sat in these same stands, hearing the same reply: “It’s over. We lost.” But this year is going to be different! This year we know we can! The kickoff . . . All the fans are going wild. Ronnie Adkins and Company look really good tonight. Maybe that will help us. Three minutes till halftime . . . Buck Belue has the ball down on the twenty. Uh-oh. Too bad Belue. Charles Burgman has got that lucky number 7 jersey tonight. The cheerleaders are standing, watch- ing, praying just like all the fans on the Lowndes side. The seconds are counting down. There’s the buzzer . . . 0-0 halftime score. The Viking fans are going wild. Never have we held them like this. The newspaper reporters begin to doubt their picks of the Winner. The ’Dosta side isn’t quite as loud as in past years. Maybe they feel the difference too. Third quarter begins and the tension is growing. When will it be over? There goes the offense, now the defense. Still 0-0. Wait a minute! There goes Buck back for a long bomb. Oh please, watch out defense. I don’t believe it! Bill Schreffler. our safety, came out of the clear blue. He caught the ball. He is still running and he still has the ball. Something is wrong. We made a touchdown — LHS-7 VHS-0. It’s third quarter and we’re winning. The Viking Fight Song can barely be heard over the screams and yells of the Viking backers. Compared to the Lowndes side, the Valdosta fans look like they have lost their best friends. L.H.S. is fired up! Here we go again back to the pushing and shoving of the offense and defense. Third quarter seems to be flying by. At least our clock hasn’t broken. Fourth quarter . . . Will that great defense last till the end? Back to the same old grind. Will it ever end? Valdosta Kicks. What happened? We’re only on the 15. The Dosta defense is coming on strong. 3rd down, 7 yards to go. Oh No! Luke’s down in the end zone. Lowndes 7, Valdosta 2. The Valdosta side has come alive. They have a chance and they think they can do it. But Adkins and Company have other plans. The minutes are counting down. Two minutes to go. Belue goes back again for the long bomb. He connects. Play after play, down the field they go. The final seconds . . . The Lowndes fans are going wild! 5, 4, 3. 2. 1 . . . We Finally did it. The Viking dream came true. It’s over and WE WON! Let me not defer it nor neglect it, 201 202 For I shall this way not pass again. What was it like being a 1978 Graduate of Lowndes High? Some say fantastic, sad, or even regretful. But for me it was a combina- tion of all these feelings. While singing our class song and listening to every word, the sadness of leaving the security and good times of high school behind became reality. The thoughts of how I could have achieved more, learned more, or been of more service to my fellow students filled my mind. But then as my name was called over the P.A. system, the happiness and pride that follows every achievement became overwhelming. With my diploma in my hand, trying to look very brave, I marched off the field. As I mixed with the crowd of familiar faces, the last line of our class motto flashed before my eyes, “For I shall not pass this way again.” Instead of holding on to the past, I had to let go and start reaching for the future whether it may be good or bad.
