Wall Dear Friends; I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to express: (1) My sincere and best wishes to the members of the Senior Class of 1964 as you leave the Lowndes County High School and adventure forth into a world which will confront you with great challenge, opportunities, and problems. I wish for you continued good health, happiness, and success, and hope that you will come back often to see us. (2) My appreciation to all the members of the student body and the faculty for your continued cooperation and enthusiasm in making our school a great school. After all, the greatness and excellence of the Lowndes County High School is going to be in direct proportion to our combined efforts, enthusiasm, and cooperation. (3) My commendations to the members of the Annual Staff for the excellent work you have done in publishing the 1964 Legend. I feel that this Annual will help to make us all proud of the Lowndes County High School and also the Lowndes County High School proud of us. (4) My desire to be of the greatest possible service to all the pre- sent and former students of the Lowndes County High School. Let us know when we can serve you. Your Friend, [ 4 ] May 26, 1964 F r iends. Even though the years will pass quickly when we graduate, we will carry with us all the memories from our high school escapades. We will remember 1963-1964 for all the friends we met and the things we did. We will remember the last minute rush for Homecoming, the Wizard of Oz as pertaining to the Beauty Contest, the Stairway to the Stars (and the million stars we made in history class) and the exciting graduation night. The seniors will never forget Kid's Day when Mrs. Adams got thrown in the water and for the freshmen it was Rat Week-unbearable torture in- flicted by the seniors on the naive newcomers. Many students will never forget the scare of being called in on the intercom or little talks Mr. Wall gave in his office. All in all this has been a wonderful year full of excitement and fun. And we, the seniors of 1964 will never forget it. Your Editor, [ 5 ] Mary Jane Yorke To Mrs. Dorothy Carter we dedicate this 1964 Legend. To Mrs. Carter, whose out-standing qualities as a teacher, whose leadership and determination, and whose understand- ing and patience, endears her to all. Mrs. Carter teaches English, Speech, Journalism, String Band, Glee Club and is sponsor for the cheerleaders. [ 7 ] Theme Illustrated in the pages to follow is the typical day of the students at Lowndes County High School. The day may have started with the ring of the alarm clock, a brief breakfast and a helpful shove out the front door, where the cheerful yellow bus awaited. On the bus closely-knit students in a half-awake state mingled, talked, told jokes, and laughed before starting a sup- posedly serious day of study. Once in school, students dispersed in all directions, to the lockers, the crowd- ed girls rooms for a last-minute comb-out, and to homerooms. Throughout the day, friends met, shared happiness and good times as well as the problems and heartbreaking experiences of that day. That special he or she , the tests failed together, football games and dances, are all events to be remembered. In the years to come, when recalling distant memories the following pages will bring back to life the life you lived at Lowndes County High. What was LOHI? LOHI was faces-- of teachers, friends, fellow students, sad ones, and happy ones, always chang- ing. LOHI was activity--quiet study, serious discussion, exciting games and noisy crowds. LOHI was color--sometimes bright, happy colors and sometimes blue but always there was a color. LOHI was a feeling--a sense of belonging to that wonderful blue and gold, of being a Golden Eagle! [ 9 ] And so the story begins... amid the faces The shrill jangling of the alarm clock breaks the darkened silence of the morning to signal a new day. Just a few more moments in bed, before those last few minutes of unconfused silence are reluctantly relinquished, before it's up-and-at-'em. A splash of cold water and the cool peppermint of toothpaste help cast a slightly more favorable light on the day. Perhaps there's even a smile for that monkey staring out of the mirror. With the bed slightly made and the room slightly messed, it's down to breakfast to be greeted by a unanimous chorus of yawns. Breakfast, which at best is a not too reasonable facsimile of a meal, consists of food never finished and home- work in the process of completion. Con- versation is limited to inarticulate grunts which are mutually unheard. After the few allotted moments of breakfast comes the mad dash for lost homework, hidden books, and misplaced shoes. The first trip out the door is unsuccessful, end- ing in the return for some other forgotten item. After a few more maternal re- minders, the final exit is made, with the disorganized morning serving as a warm-up for an equally hectic day. The walk to the bus quite often re- sembles the fifty yard dash, for the bus doesn't wait for late-comers, and it's a long hike to school. The pushing, the shoving--It's a minor battle to board the bus. Is everyone really that anxious to get to school? 7:30 am [ 12 ] [ 13 ] A frantic struggle with your locker precedes the last few sleepy minutes of freedom before the class day begins. These minutes are precious ones, to be used in finishing homework, gossiping and flirting, or putting those last stub- born hairs into place with hair spray. 8:35 am [ 14 ] Devotion and the pledge to the flag, quiet minutes, officially begin the day. After announcements, however the room returns to its normal state of bedlam. 8:45 am [ 15 ] Even early in the morning before classes begin, LOHI is buzzing with activity. While students sit in their home- rooms, the lunchroom ladies begin preparing for the mam- moth lunch they must prepare, the custodians resume their never-ending tasks, and the office staff starts its long day by admitting late students to school. The principal, from the inner recess of the office, makes the necessary announcement over the intercom system concerning the day's activities. The librarians ready themselves and the book- shelves for the onslaught of readers who are going to come seeking books and magazines of all kinds throughout the day. It certainly takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make the school'run smoothly all day, every day. [ 17 ] [ 18 ] Louis Carter A. B.
