Volume 3 LOHI LEGEND Published by Lowndes County High School Route 2 Valdosta, Georgia Editor s Message The past year has been filled with many cherished memories, some of which will be remembered long- er and more vividly than others. Freshmen, the highlight of your year came on Rat Day, September 21. After three weeks of attending LoHi but not quite belonging and one week of torture in the hands of cruel seniors, you were tried, sentenced, penalized and were finally in officially. October 13 was an impressive first. It didn't rain and the Homecoming parade rolled along perfectly dry! We made up for it, however, by holding the dance in an underwater cavern, complete with fishes and mermaids. Juniors, on February 23, seniors honored you with the Ring Ball. In a Winter Wonderland you passed through the replica of a LoHi classring and received your own long awaited rings, the status symbol of an upperclassman. Seniors, on May 11, the juniors gave you a Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance filled with the beauty of a Parisienne Holiday. That night you turned over to them your responsibilities, your offices—everything except your prestige. A week later on May 18, you returned to the Wonderful World of Children for one final, carefree fling before assuming the responsibilities of an adult. That was Kid's Day. During all this, you sophomores roamed jauntily around bragging because you were no longer freshmen, longing for the day you would become upperclassmen and, in general, en- joying everyone else's fun. We had a great year in sports too, coming very close to several championships. There were inspiring victories and heartbreaking defeats, but, won or lost, each competitive event brought greater pride and respect for our Alma Mater. These were our social events. We had our fun. But the spotlight was put on scholarship this year. Our theme of operation was LoHi, a School of Excellence and each senior was extreme- ly proud of that educational emphasis when, on June 5, he experienced a wonderful feeling of accomplishment as that coveted diploma was placed in his hand. Presenting the highlights of the year, may this annual be, in reality, the LEGEND of the four classes who worked, played, studied, and prayed together in the 1961-1962 school year. Mary Alice GrisiKcll Editor 2 3 Mr. James A. Goolsby With greatest love, respect and admiration we, the Legend Staff of 1961-62, dedicate this third edition To one whom we regard not only as a teacher, but as a friend. To one, without whose help this book would not be possible To one who has guided us with a deep understanding of our problems and an unfailing sense of humor, To one who has so loyally promoted our social functions. A. Goolsby, Hagan Shirley J r Principal's Message Dear Friends, There are two sides of life which deserve serious consideration. It seems to me that both of these sides must be developed harmoniously if we are to grow into well-rounded personalities. First, there is the cooperative side which consists in developing such attributes of character as friendliness, politeness, courtesy, humility, patience, understanding, compassion, charity, and a process. This is also the Christian way of life for Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Secondly, there is the competitive side of life which consists in preparing, striving, grasping op- portunities, achieving, excelling, overcoming, succeeding and, yes, even winning. This is also a part of the educational process. It is also a Christian way of life for Paul admonishes us to press on, to fight a good fight, to run a good race, to live victoriously. These two sides of life, cooperation and competition, do not oppose each other, but work to- gether, supplement and strengthen each other in the building of a noble and useful life. He who strives for excellency and mastery and lives victoriously attains unto a position in which he is best enabled to serve well his fellow-man, his country, and his Creator. I want to encourage all of you, my good friends, to develop a good cooperative spirit and at the same time to avail yourselves of every opportunity here in the Lowndes County High School, our school, to develop a good competitive spirit by competing, succeeding, overcoming obsta- cles, and excelling in your every undertaking. My commendations to the Annual Staff for a job well dene, my heartiest congratulations and sincere best wishes to each member of the Senior Class of 1962. real willingness to help and serve our fellow-man at all times. This' is a part of the educational Your friend. T. H. Wall, Jr. 8 Superintendent’s Message MEMBERS OF THE STUDENT BODY Lowndes County High School It is a wonderful thing to be able to review the events, activities, and associations that make school days so enjoyable. All the efforts of your annual staff have been to preserve these memories. You are more aware now, however, of efforts of instructors to stress the im- portance of learning in fields of Science, Math, and the Arts. But your instruc- tion is not limited to subject matter. There is encouragement to try new things; new ideas presented every day; opportunity to develop your abilities in every way to include understanding the needs of others and a preparation for service to others. Your school spirit is commendable. We can all be proud of your efforts and ac- complishments. The Board members and I are happy to assist you in your school program, and we encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity, develop every ability, and grow in wisdom, understanding and patience.
