Printed and Bound in the U. S. A. by School Printing Service CHARLOTTE, N. C. LOWGAP HIGH SCHOOL LOWGAP HIGH SCHOOL Presents DEDICATION CLIFFORD C. BAILEY To a man whose friendliness, constructive ability, and his willingness to help us at all times, have won for him the honest love and admiration of each and every student at Lowgap High School. It is with pride we honor him, a man who is a living tribute to the finer things of life, and dedicate our second edition of the Vox Mon tin m to our Principal, Clifford C. Bailey. WE PAUSE TO HONOR He was no saint, and didn’t pre¬ tend to be. He was a man who lived what he taught his students —both on the inside and outside the classroom. Mr. Carson never met a person he could not like, and there was no person who ever really knew him who didn’t love him. There are very few who have not witnessed his cheerful words and friendly attitude. There are very few who will not mourn or miss him. In Memoriam . . . During this school year Lowgap has suffered a great loss—a pioneer teacher and citizen—Mr. Charlie F. Carson. As long as there is anyone who remembers him, Mr. Carson will not die in the hearts of the people and his many students. Mr. Carson does not want or need a monument; he already has it placed in the hearts of the boys and girls whom he has influenced greatly. And there’s the hard part—Mr. Carson would be the first to put a stop to the mourning. He never had time for such things—he was too busy getting and giving the most he could out of life. Mr. Carson knew what his physical condition was; with his great handicap, but he kept his worries to himself. It was a peculiar type of courage, which Mr. Carson possessed, but he kept it through the last moments of his life. Whether fully realized or not, the student body has lost one of the best friends is ever had. Mr. Carson’s memory and all that stood for are left in the hands of those who loved him. He is not to be mourned, he is to be remembered—because that’s the way he would have wanted it. As long as there is anyone who remembers him, Mr. Carson is not dead. MR. CHARLIE F. So, with much struggling most of our students managed to skip high first and go on to second grade. There we gained a few students. In our third year, just as we were getting adjusted to school life and our new environment, we heard the tragic news that our school building had burned. Our third and fourth years of schooling were achieved in churches, deserted stores, factory basements, and our old gymnasium. When we were ready to start back to school for our fifth year a new building awaited us. Our fifth, sixth and seventh years consisted of ordinary school life; studies, parties, hikes, etc. When we entered that eighth grade room we thought we were kings and queens, but Mr. Carson soon quieted us down and let us know that we weren’t. As we entered high school we gained a few students and also lost a few. Speaking of green Freshmen—that was us! It was hard getting adjusted to changing classes and all those teachers, but when we did we thought High School was wonderful. That year the basketball teams claimed the attention of most of our girls and boys. This was a major sport all through high school. Our eleventh year was filled with excite¬ ment; the main event being the Junior-Senior Banquet and the class picnic. It took quite a lot of work getting enough money together for these activities, but we survived and the next year came back as dignified Seniors. This, our last year, proved to be a real success. With the patient help of Mr. Brown; our teacher, we, twenty-six Seniors, most graduating from Low.gap in years; marched down the aisle for that night of all nights—GRADUATION. Happiness intermingled with sadness is the state of our hearts as we say good-bye to our cherished Alma Mater, LHS.
