The Class of 1955, and the last senior class graduating from our beloved Lower Paxton High School, presents this final yearbook. With the theme, Lower Paxton's Past, Present and Futuref' we hail our happy days at Lower Paxton and the days of those before us. A bright future lies in store for the underclass- men, but they remember the real values of Old L.P. Deep in the hearts of the Alumni, the strains of our Alma Mater will still re- sound, and may this panorama of our high school days ever stimulate them. . . In Recognition To one who has given so generously of his time and efforts, we, the Class of 1955, express our sin- cere gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Walter E. Shank. This year marks the Tenth Anniversary for Mr. Shank as advisor of the Lower Paxton High School Yearbook. We can say without reserve, that these yearbooks produced by graduating classes down through the years, under his supervision, have been of high quality and caliber. We hail thee ever, Alma Mater. 10 IDAXTQN Rasa: 1 I History of Lower Paxton Lower Paxton township was never actually authorized, but was what remained of the orig- inal township of Paxton, after town and townships were carved from it. Upper and Middle Pax- ton, the Swataras, Susquehanna, and Hanover townships, and the Harrisburg Borough lie within the old boundaries. Paxton township was settled First by the Scotch Irish, and Pennsylvania Germans. These early settlers bound themselves together for protection mainly from Indians, and called them- selves the Paxton Boys. Liberty and Independence was their cry, and within 48 hours after the news of Lexington Battle, the well home-trained men were ready to move, making them the first volunteers of the state. Each home unit had its own flag, since there was no national flag. They were dressed in white frocks, or rifle shirts, and round hats. The Paxton Boys fought all the way from Quebec to Charleston. An outrage committed by a band of men from Paxton Township at Conestoga where they murdered several of the Indians of that peaceful tribe, has marred their integrity. However, the men re- ceived full sanction from most of the inhabitants of the surround- ing area for this heinous crime and went unpunished. Many churches were built in the township, and many of them still stand today. Religion meant a lot to these upstanding settlers. Their farms were fertile and the rural area prospered. The town of St. Thomas, now named Linglestown, was the main settlement of the area and it boasted three general stores. Small villages bordered the Jones- town Road. After Civil War days, the old Jonestown Road was widened into a highway to carry the Har- risburg traffic. Colonial Park, Paxtonia and then other suburb- an areas shot up as the rural township started to turn from rural to semi-rural and then to suburban. Farms have been turned into housing developments as bulldoz- ers have leveled hills and wood- lots. Wildlife and beautiful land- scape are being pushed aside. History and tradition too have died, as many new people have moved into the township. However, in the hearts of many, will remain memories of days gone by, of wooded hillsides, of old postmasters and soldiers, and of Lower Paxton High School. We are grateful for the won- derful accounts collected over many years by Nevin Moyer, local historian and teacher in the town- ship schools, who did so much to preserve the traditional history of our community. The very first settlers of Lower Paxton Township taught their children at home. Later, as the churches grew, children attended parochial schools at Wenrich's Church, and at Shoop's Church. Since there were very few col- leges or universities in America in Colonial times, students had to go to Europe to further their edu- cation. The people of Paxton, Derry, and Hanover townships did not desire to send their child- ren to Europe. In 1739 they erect- ed a log college in Paxton Town- ship. This structure stood until 1919. The one-room log school houses were erected in the 1800's and stern masters taught the three R's with aid of a hickory stick. In 1856, Lower Paxton had seven 12 log schools and 455 pupils. Grad- ually log schools gave way to frame and later to brick struc- tures. A two-year high school course was established in 1909. The courses offered were: General Science, Algebra, Civics, English, History, Geometry, and Botany. The need for a better high school increased through the years. In 1921 work was started on the present building. The building was dedicated in 1922. Seven stu- dents graduated in the first class. Several additions have been made to this building to meet the past needs of the growing township. The Alumnae and friends of Lower Paxton High School will ever remember the traditions and customs, and especially senior classes. IN THE THOUGHTS OF MANY: Class plays are acted again with all the excitement of opening night. The more or less sweet music of the dance band, still enchants dancers in the gym. Proms and parties need crepe paper and the crystal ball, and nails cannot be driven into the gym floor. The band is practic- ing on the cold, dusty football field for the rival game with Susquehanna, as the Student Council plans for the Homecom- ing dance. A typist for the year- book, The Ranger, is pecking furiously on the typewriter with the worn ribbon, while a writer for the newspaper, The Paxton Scroll, beats a deadline. A mem- ber of the basketball squad is anxiously anticipating a basket- ball game while daydreaming during the day's last period. Curran, has been with us for nine years and he has guided us in many ways, during our high school days. Due to the experience he gained as a teacher, and advisor of classes 'S50 and 54 , the newspaper and the Hi-Y Club, Mr. Curran proved a great asset to Lower Paxton. We will probably partly remember Mr. Curran as a human dynamo, an inspiration to any student. Yet, his classes never suffered for his interest extra-curricular activities, and he was never too busy to help a troubled student with a personal problem. Everyone who has come in contact with him has grown to love and respect him. Making Mr. Curran Guidance Counselor of Lower Paxton High School was a fine blessing for the entire school. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY fcontinuecll In our Junior year Earl Zimmer- man was again elected President, Charles Gregor, Vice President, jean- nette Bierbower, Secretary, Sandra Frantz, Treasurer, and Loretta Wynn, Historian. The Sophomore Project was our main event during the first year of organization. We presented Linekin's School of Dance, which was a success. Our class featured The Girl- friendn as its Junior Play, with Mr. C. Fasnacht directing. More Than Meets the Eye was chosen as our Senior Play. Miss S. Schubauer served as our director. With these two plays, we the Class of ,55 proved our drama- tic ability. Leading our football teams on to victory were these class members: Mike Zakis, Charlie Gregor, George Zimmerman, Dave Osswald, Alvin Potteiger, Bob Stevick, Ed Gillespie, Don Sellers, Al Chronister, and Dave Garland. Diana Hetrick and Gladys Wade, ma jorettesg Beverly Kuhn, Syl- via Myers, janet Lego, and Barbara F erber, flagtwirlers performed during games and in parades. The American Flag was carried by Pat McMurray, while Nancy Dimm and Loretta Wynn cheered our teams on to vic- tory. Reigel Haas, Zoe Machamer, Earl Zimmerman, Sandy Frantz, Bet- sy Schubauer, Sandra Hoffner, Leh- ner and Larry Bittle, Paul Clouser and Ken Tiffany provided the music for the games and parades. Aiding the boys' basketball team were Reigel Haas, Mike Zakis, Don Sellers, Charles Gregor, Al Chronis- ter, Alvin Potteiger and Lee Givler. The team was managed by George Zimmerman. Beverly Deaven, Ella Asper, Zoe Machamer, Jeannette Bierbower, Di- ana Hetrick, Sandy Frantz, Mary Sharretts, Beverly Wilson, Barbara Ferber and Gladys Wade led the girls' team to victory, while jo Grubb was the team's capable manager. Members of our class on the boys' baseball teams were Charlie Gregor, Mike Zakis, Reigel Haas and Donnie Sellers. The girls' softball team was assisted by Barb Ferber, Jeannette Bierbower, Mary Sharretts, Ella Asp- er, Sandy Frantz, Gladys Wade and Beverly Wilson. In searching through files, yearbooks, and memories of graduates of yester- year, the writers have uncovered a number of facts that should be interesting to student and alumni sports enthusiasts of the school. Only the highlights dating back to Lower Paxton Vocational High School's first days are in- cluded. Accuracy of information in many cases is based on hear- say and items available in year- books. Perhaps, a review of opponents no longer appearing on the sched- ule would be enlightening. Vars- ity athletic teams of the past have vied with such opponents as Annville, Marysville, Myerstown, Central Penn Business School, Steelton Reserves, Hershey In- dustrial Jayvees, Camp Curtin, Patton Trade, Biglerville, Eliza- bethtown junior Varsity, Lititz, Williamstown, Jonestown, Hersh- ey, Juniata Jt., Washington Twp., Wrightsville, Duncannon, Harris- it - v is sw i . Earliest records, those of 1927, indicate basketball was the lone sport. During this season the boys won and lost five games and for- feited twelve-why the forfeit- no known reason. The boys downed Susquehanna 17-8 and forfeited a second game 0-2. Cap- tain Paul Boyer scored a season high of 90 points. The Ranger- ettes compiled an 8 won and 5 lost record, losing 32-15 to their cross-road rivals in a first en- counter and winning a re-match 24-13. Yearbook records reveal that Mary Sherk fMrs. Clint Keplerj scored a season total of 247 points. Paxton moved into the sports spotlight in '40 and 541. 1941 found football team noting a 6 won, 1 lost record and annexing the league Class B title. The 1940 gridders compiled a skein of sev- en victories and suffered one loss. A Ranger quintet won 19 and lost 1 basketball contest-winning two in inter-district play-offs. ' H . Markley. 104 During '41 these same hoopsters won the Lower Dauphin Crown for the second consecutive year with a 12-0 log of games. The only team in league history to win all its games. Good years followed in '42 with the boys basketball teams rolling over league opposition- winning 20 and losing twog '48's quintet won 16 and lost 6, win- ning two in post season play-offs, Rangerette teams of '44 averaged 9 victories and 2 defeats, the boys varsity had an 11-6 record, Rang- erettes of '50 scored twelve wins and avoided a defeat. Baseball's short but colorful season has found Lower Paxton's nine as champions a strong con- tenders sporting impressive rec- ords. Perhaps, it is best remem- bered by the outstanding players that filled its line-up, such as Le- roy Buck jones, Les Gipe, Cy Hocker, Sherrn Frantz, Dr. Frank Pittman, Bill Lenker, john and Lee Campbell, Bob Kepler, Ken- ny Nickel, Bill Allen, Miles B. Zimmerman, Tom George, Ray and Clint Kepler. The above athletes and the fol- lowing: Mrs. Mary Kepler, jim Laneg faculty members R. C. Bell and Carl Brame, Joe Mos- chettig Pooch Arnold, George Ebersole and Jim and Alby Keis- er are established members of the community. Many have had their children follow in athletic foot- steps on recent teams. Numerous others have served well and faithfully, space does not permit the printing of their names, but it is a surety that the spirit ex- hibited by them will, through their and other children, make the future sports history of Cen- tral Dauphin an illustrious one. SHooP 116 rr 3 1 .1.x..4.i.ma, Wahl . 2 Ground Breaking Ceremonies and Construction Central Dauphin Joint High School LOOKING AHEAD FOR LOWER PAXTON The answer to the dreams of many students, parents, school administrators and teachers, will bc the Central Dauphin High School. It is the largest school building in the area, housing senior high students from Swatara. West Hanover, Low- er Paxton, and Middle Paxton Twp, Schools, and Penbrook, Dauphin, and Paxtang boroughs. Nine hundred fifty t95Ol students will be expected to attend when school opens this fall and this number will mount to 1150 or more by 1960. The area covered by the bus system of not less than l5 buses will amount to about U8 of the total area of Dauphin County. We not only have new school buildings in our township, but also a new school system. The Cen- tral Dauphin Joint School System is headed by Kermit M. Stover, who is supervising principal of the Central Dauphin joint Schools. Charles Fas- nacht will be principal of Lower Paxton Junior High School while Arthur Shoop will head Cen- tral Dauphinis High School. 7 A wonderful academic program will go into action featuring distributive education. college preparatory courses, shops of all types and many diversilied educational opportunities for students. Harold Peck of Lewistown will head the Voca- tional Department. Accompanying a good scholastic program will be worthwhile, full-time guidance program direct- ed by Lee C. Olson. with john F. Curran from Lower Paxton and E. Brad Hartman from Swa- tara aiding him on the junior and senior high levels. Counseling will begin formally in the 8th grade and will closely follow up through the sen- ior year and will even aid students in selecting and attending colleges. The counselors will seek to aid any students no matter what his problem: the problem may be scholastic, domestic. or personal. Marjorie Dell fabsentj LOOKING AHEAD FOR LOWER PAXTON fconiinuedl Financial help will be sought to aid any senior at- tend college because students with ability and a desire for knowledge should be helped. Student Government of Central Dauphin has already been underway under the direction of Kermit Stover and Arthur Shoop and the school administrators, guidance counselors, and the Stu- dent Advisory Council consisting of the officers of the student councils and classes of the schools. John Harlow, Ann Morris, Ann Shatto, John Cas- satt, Barbara Fritchey, Ken Clouser, Jeannette Bierbower, Earl Zimmerman, and Charles Gregor represented Lower Paxton on the council. This group has been trying to iron out some of the problems between the schools of the jointure and ready the extra-activities program for this fall. Full-range sports will be new to L.P. and a de- light to many. Joseph Yukica will head football coaching. The hrst game will be on September 9th against Mechanicsburg on the home field. Wlilliam Penn will be met away on the 23rd: Harrisburg Catholic on the 30th at home, West Shore on Oct. 7th, away: Palmyra the 14th at home, John Har- ris, 28th away: Nov. 4th Milton Hershey, homeg and Susquehanna on Nov. 12th. John Bruner will coach Boys Basketball with Harrisburg Catholic on his schedule Girls Basketball will be coached by Louise Krolak and Paul Landis will manage the baseball teams. Trach will be coached by Paul Paxton and Karlene Bolton will have the Hockey team. Tennis and wrestling will round out the program. The extra-curricular program will be complete. A school newspaper, yearbook, band, orchestra, clubs, and intramural sports program will all be found. Practically any extra activity that doesn't exist after the hrst year may come into existence through the demands of the students. Marching band will have approximately 100 members and will sport green and white uniforms at the first football game. Witman Gingrich will direct the instrumental music department and the band will practice during the summer to be ready for the football season. Plans for an orchestra are underway. The future looks bright for the students of Lower Paxton Township. May they take with them to the new Central Dauphin High School the best that Lower Paxton High School had to offer, and at the same time taking on the new, friendly, school spirit.
