The Legend of '54 Treasure has only the material value given to it by humans. Our story is treasurable in its preservation of significant and vivid events of our high school days. The tale begun three years ago, comes to an end the evening of May 23, 1954. Set in time as of October 12, 1951, the theme of organization introduced newly elected class officers: Fred Hartman, president: Calvin Winter, vice president, Betty Wynn, secretary: Io Ann Deibler, historian: Irving Glover, treas- urer. john F, Curran was appointed faculty advisor. The tenure of all officers remained unchanged, except that of treasurer where Ed Boyer replaced Irving Glover who voluntarily retired during the third year. To round out the basic background of the tale, a motto of Conduct and Courage Leads to Honor was adopted. Original class colors were crimson and grey, the class flower a red rose. A change in color scheme later identified the class with colors black and gold, and a new flower, the white carnation. Time sweeps by quickly, even for the young, and it seems but yesterday that the class pro- duced a variety show as their Sophomore pro- ject on February 6 and 7 of 1952. At that time, the nucleus of varsity teams in major sports ffor the past two yearsj filled the ranks of jayvee squads in girls and boys sports. It was in this year that All-Conference back Mike Gain launched his brilliant football career. along with All-Conference honorable mentions -George McLane, Calvin Winter, Bob Stam- mel, and Gary Chohany. Other jayvees later carved their names deeply in the football an- nals of the 'area-particular acclaim to Bernie Eisenhour, jack Weaver, Dan Rothenberger, Fred Hartman, Ed Keiser, Ronnie Schreffler, Dave Kindig, Harry Ewing, Dennis Lynch, and Terry johnson, nor should Art Shade, Earle Bates, or Dave Hoffer soon be forgotten. lmpetus was further added to the sports parade of today as male and female court stars of '54 prepped on jayvee squads. Feminine court stylists Annetta Bickle, janet Sharretts. Io Ann Deibler, jeanne Brenize, Carol Myers, Dolores Leiby, and Manager Betty Wynn gained the experience needed for varsity com- petition to equal the caliber of previous Ranger- ette sextets. jack Lenker, George McLane, and Mike Gain, along with Bob Stammel earned basketball recognition in '52 to serve as the Rangers' high scorers throughout the 53-54 schedule. ln the diamond sport, recognition should be made of the quiet, capable, loyal services of Leroy Holfner, baseball assistant Kas well as basketballj and later manager of two sports. Paxton's big three-Gain, McLane, and Lenker spearheaded efforts of lettermen Ronnie Beck, Dennis Lynch, Bob Stammel, Earle Bates, Fred Hartman, Harry Ewing, and Gary Chohany over 'three successful years. Linksman Bob Shive was the lone senior in continuous gold competition and acquitted him- self well in this sport during his high school days. Music soothes the most relentless heart and inspired the most indifferent performer, and its rhythm is part of every story whether written or narrated. Ronnie Beck and Clara Stailey, perhaps have had the longest period of service in musical organizations. Seniors Bob Stammel, Doris Shutt, Leroy Hoffner, and Faye Frysing- er also excelled in marching, dance and concert band roles. Faye garnered honors in junior and senior years by gaining membership in the Dis- trict band as the result of her splendid French horn renditions. Closely allied to musical endeavor and com- plimenting it also was the graceful activity of flag twirler, band front, and majorette corps. Renowned locally was acrobatic majorette Io Ann Deibler whose colorful career dated back to seventh grade. Majorette Susie Doyle, Head Flagtwirler Carol Myers, and flag carrier Lois Walters completed the senior group in this activity. Shirley Harlow became a whirlwind of action and energy on the cheerleading squad, while Dolores Leiby also carried on her duties with the cheerleading. Thespians were cast and did admirable jobs in the junior production, The Case of the Sulky Girl. Actors and actresses of note were Ronnie Schreffler, Io Ann Deibler, Ina Rae Rooney, Dave Hoffer, Danny Rothenberger, jack Weaver, Dolores Leiby, Susie Doyle, Carol Myers, Ed Keiser, and Calvin Winter. The class produced their last dramatic effort in giving the comedy, I'm a Family Crisis . on November 19 and 20 of '53, Added to many repeaters in the cast above were jo Sellers, Sylvia Ebersole, Audrey Bowman, Dave Kindig, Clara Stailey, Carol Garland, and Shirley Holtzman. Audience reaction pro- claimed it one of the best ever given at Lower Paxton. Senior Calvin Winter became presi- dent of the Thespian Society, Danny Rothen- berger, Veep, jo Deibler, secretary, and Io Sellers, clerk, Gay and formal was the junior Prom on May 8 of '53 as classmates and friends danced in the high school auditorium which decorative- ly was likely to a Paris Street Scene along cabaret row by the ingenious efforts of class members. Only yesterday it began. Now the sands of time in the hour glass of our high school days shift quickly to the last year. A memorable edition is planned, A Treasure Chest of Mem- ories a yearbook to hold these enjoyable days intact to review often as the years course by. Ina Rae Rooney, Paxton's winner of the Good Citizen award is given the job of Editor-in- Chief. Associate editors Fred Hartman, Calvin Winter, and Io Deibler will assist her. A board of art editors comprised of Shirley Kennedy, Carol Garland, Ieanne Brenize, and Susie Doyle will sketch the attractive lay-outs. The project is a big one and commands the able capabilities of Business Managers Clara Stailey and Bob Stammel and chief typist Doris Shutt and a host of others that represent a third of the class. The school year has rushed to its midway mark and a few closing items might be recorded before our annual goes to press to have its pages sealed forever. Currently Mike Gain has won the coveted title of President of the Student Council and his very efficient key personnel in editing the first blue and white handbook have been coun- cil members Mike Zorek, Dolores Leiby, and Shirley Harlow. Io Deibler scored a victory and became Queen of Hearts in the annual Charity Ball. Our class Hallow'een party was great fun and the Christmas formal in plan and decora- tion was a tribute to class team work. Class Day, Baccalaureate, and Graduation will end our story - may others to follow live their high school days at Lower Paxton as happily as ours. Prophecy We, the editors, of the 1954 yearbook in- troduced our prophecy for the Senior Class.
