Page 63 Highlights of Football Season While many of us were still mak- ing our daily trip to the old swim- ming hole, the moulding of the 1947 Ranger football squad was under- taken by Coach Bo Capello and a large squad of 88 candidates on the school gridiron. Their pre-season efforts and continued work durinq the Fall enabled LPHS to field another strong contingent that won all but three games. To the average fan, the plaudits go to the coach and the starting eleven-but to the visitor at a prac- tice session, the work of the boys on the reserve squad cannot be over- looked. It is they who take the nightly beating at the hands of the highly-touted varsity backs, who must learn new sets of plays that may be used by the next Saturday opponents and who must be able to use several types of defense that might be met. Their glory as players comes later, usually in their Iunior and Senior years, but their part in making a winning team starts the first day they report for practice. The season was begun by choosing Frannie Kaufman and Mary Winter as co-captains. The majority of the first games were played on our home floor which seemed to bring luck. On February 6. the girls traveled to Hummelstown which marked their first defeat. Although hoping they would not have any' more losses, Lemoyne and Highspire overpowered them by low scores. Qur girls' team consists of six seniors, one of whom had earned her letter for four years, Isabell Ielfries, and one for two years, Frannie Kaufman. Other one year members are Mary Winter, Marie Mtimmert, Esther McNeal, and Ieanne Beaver. Our senior manager, Patty Fahrney, did a very good job. The underclassmen are two juniors and six sophomores. Despite all their good luck and bad luck the Lower Paxton Rangeretts are second in standing in the Lower Susquehanna Conference, and are tied for first place with Highspire in the Lower Dauphin League.
