We hail thee Alma Mater as we leave our high school days, We're left alone in the world now to go our individual ways No more to depend on the teacher, no more chea ting from Ioe, We're on our own now, and we realize that, so make way we're ready to go. We played and we worked hard together, And talked about many great things, But now our twelve years are over, So we must bear what the future brings. The road that we tread will be narrow, There'll be days of deep sorrow and strife, But always remember - don't ever forget All of this goes into life. Now our school days will long be remembered And our school spirits always are near Farewell and goodby we're leaving 'now So Farewell Alma Mater dear. -SARA Page 22 H GEESAMAN A X 9 X n T EMELINE REBA ALBERT Emmy lINlTll' listen here Emmy is our show girl: she is tal- ented in acrobatics and accordian, She shows great ability in capturing speci- mens of the male sex. Much to our amazement we were starting our high school career. In 'number we were eighty: in deportment we were noisy and excited. The first task we took up was the selecting of our class color and flower. We chose the yellow rose for our flower and blue and gold for class colors. The beginning of our list of achieve- ments was that of a successful magazine campaign. Our next highlight was the election of officers, Rus- sell Walters, president who served for three consecu- tive years. Van Hocker, vice-president: Sarah Geesa- man, secretary: Iune Kocher, treasurer. We are proud to mention the fact that Albert, Koons, Geesaman were chosen cheerleaders during their Sophomore year. Keiser was chosen during her Iunior year. Geesaman served as Captain during her Senior year. We had a few boys on the football team, which was the beginning of their football career. Of course, the best heading was our Sophomore Project, with Hop- per's School of Dancing which gave us a wonderful evening of entertainment. Our boys were very active in most sports excepting basketball which they parti- cipated in their last two years of school life. Several of our girls had the honor of being members on the championship basketball team. During our Iunior year we really went places. For the second consecutive year we won the magazine campaign. The Red Cross was headed by Marion Beam. The number of our football team was increas- ed to six. For the first time we had a tremendous turnout on boys basketball teams. We decided on What A Life for our Iunior Play under the direc- tion of Miss Whitney and Miss Stamets. Much of our talent was displayed in an assembly program which included acrobats, vocal and instrumental num- Page 40 Senior .History bers. Several girls won high honors in the Public Speaking Contest. With Spring just around the corn- er we started to make Plans for our Iunior Prom. lt was the first to be held away from the school. We held it at the Civic Club, with music by Howard Gale. Everyone had a wonderful time and a most enjoyable evening. And finally we were Seniors! Again we won the magazine campaign, Our football team was increased to seven. Among the players were Witman, Camp- bell, Groff, Staudt, Medellin, Norris, and Van Hock- er who was Captain. Glenn Hocker served as man- ager. We were proud of all the players and the fine showing they made throughout the season. The bas- ketball squads were represented with several Senior boys, V. Hocker, G. Hocker, Groff, Campbell, Boy- anowski, Staudt, and Norris as Captain. They also put on a fine showing throughout the season. Our girls basketball squad was represented with several Senior girls. They were Koons, Kocher, Keiser, Hirt, Hoover, Bickhart, and Beam as Captain. The Senior boys proved to be a great asset in baseball as Norris, Campbell, Staudt, Medellin, Zeigler, Witman, Houck and Groff played during the season. Our Christmas Dance, a formal affair, was made a success by the committee choice of Frank Taylors Orchestra. We then started work on our Senior Play, The Dead of Night given on March 27 and 28. This play, a mys- tery was another first at Lower Paxton. As this goes to press we are anticipating the Iunior Prom to be held at the Hershey Hotel. Thank you Iuniors for the wonderful send off for our class. P.S. Nearly forgot! We were able to enjoy the loud speaking system in our school which we were a part of. Five of the newly organized Red Cross Council came from our midst. Eleanor Kauffman won honors in Public Speaking. Under the able leadership of Patty Farhney, the magazine sales for our grade went over the top. Our first public appearance before the community was a highlight of the seasons entertainment, The Minstrel Show, The show was a great success anlsl vxie had learned to work together not only for financial achievements but as a credit to our sc oo. Cn the foot- ball squad we were represented by Thrush, Hughes, Kepler, Nickle, Mader, and Alexander, In basketball too, we made a large contribution with Kepler, Nickle, Thrush, Rhodes, and Mabry. Marian Arnold was elected as Co-Captain of the cheerleaders, We proved our in- itiative by reorganizing the Lower Paxton newspaper and the first edition came out November 22, 1946, Our acting ability came to the fore with the presentation of the Iunior Class play, MFootloose. In Forensic work we were represented in music, declamation, poetry, and radio. The social highlight of the season was the Iunior-Senior prom held at the Hotel Hershey. It constituted the climax of events during the third year of our high school. Starting with a successful magazine cam- paign as Freshmen, they showed their powers both in scholarship and in sports. Freshmen were representatives in every sport, They were especially noticeable in football when they made the varsity team. As Sophomores they have formed the backbone of the three major teams. Under the direc- tion of Miss Stamets and a student assistant, Betty Zakis, a double cast of girls was used. The play was a great success, both dramatically and financially. The scene is laid in the living room of the Monroe farmhouse in Vermont, near the Canadian border between ten p,m. and midnight, a night in Ianuary. It is a warm spring day similar to our graduation day. I have just come back from a picnic with Mr. and Mrs. Iohn Campbell, the former Sarah Geesaman, and family. We certainly had an opportunity to talk over old times. Sarah told me that when she had gone downtown to pay her telephone bill, she met the George twins at work in the Bell. Then while shopping on her way home, she saw Ruth Cook coming out of Kresge's of- fice, where Cookie is assistant manager. From there she went to the 210 Club, where she saw Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Hocker, formerly Emeline Albert, doing their jitterbug act to the music of Class Prophecy Betty Hirt's Hertie Gertien orchestra. Paul Miller was enjoying the night club dancers. Iohn had reported that the other day, he had met Ioe Cassel and Eugene Clay, who are bus- ily engaged in animal husbandry. They were coming home from the fair where two of Ioe's cows had won blue ribbons. After saying Good-bye to Sarah and Iohn. I met George Zeigler coming out of Murphys with his arms full of packages, and four of his six little ones strolling by his side. He told me that he had seen Eddie Boyanowski, also a mar- ried man. He had been in Sears to buy some things for his new bride. Page 80 . We began talking over old times. She told me that Miriam Lehr had graduated from the same business school that she had. I told her that I had just come from the B. C. Beauty Salon, operated by Betty Swartz and Caroline Eisenhour, right in their own home. Betty told me that her little daugh- ter had broken her arm at school where Miss Brightbill, the school nurse, and Miss Mengel, her teacher, had given her first aid before send- ing her to the hospital. Helen Kish and Reda Kinderman recently re- ceived their Beautician licenses and have a fine business. Caroline wasn't working because she had a tooth extracted in the morning. She was surprised to see Rena Koons and Virginia Long assisting the dentist. Rena is now Mrs. Robert Kepler, but A'Ginny hasn't yet found the right man. Gloria had to go home and make the evening meal at Yarnall's, Mrs, Yarnall, the former Phyllis Lamason, was helping to take inventory at Henrietta Steins where Dolores Miller, Marie Fisher, and Helen Farling are working in the office. Page 81 Glass Prophecy When I left Murphy's I walked past the Vet- erans' Administration Qffice and saw Harold Houck and Robert Hand, who are both Ensigns in the Navy. As we chatted, Bob informed me that Ed Groff had returned recently from Ha- waii where he had been stationed with Harold Gingrich, an Army Private, and Russel Wal- ters, a mechanic in the Air Corps. As I con- tinued my journey I met the Grady girls. After telling me that they were secretaries for a big show in Harrisburg, I decided to go with them to see it, Inside I was thrilled with the great performance of Ramon HFrankie Medellin. There I met Mr. and Mrs. Van Hocker, the former Marian Beam. They told me that Nancy Kinsey was now Mrs. Krieser, and that Cloma Feathers was also married, I learned from the show's typists, Betty Zakis and Katherine Yor- dy, that Thirzah Snover had made the plans for the marvelous building and that Irene Imes took care of all financial matters. Cn my way out, I met Selma Stees. She told me of many of her famous world travels. In Kentucky she had met Richard Whitman, who had started out to be a carpenter but had ended as a hobo, splitting rails for his meals. Whitman told her that while he was crossing the Appal- achian Mountains, he had met lim Shaw, who was serving his duty as forest ranger. While on her return trip, Ricky met Harvey Harmon who is teaching college classes. After realizing Wit- man's misfortune, I went up to the Gassert In- surance Company and Gerry insured my life for me without asking too many questions. Going down the street I met Robert Penning- ton, the famous playboy. He told me that Kee- ley Norris was having trouble in his Lawyers office. I decided to find out what the trouble was all about. As I entered Lawyer Norris's office, I met Mary Ann Bickhart. She told me that she had just lost her job, and that it was being taken over by Mrs. Norris, the former Almeda Keiser. On my way out, I met Eugene Stoudt, who works with the W.P.A. fWoman's Publicity Agencyl. He highly recommended Clementine Care, Irene Fulk, Dorothy Gambler, Irma Bix- ler and lune Kocher as secretaries. Asking him 'how I could get information to all my friends 'about the work being done by my classmates, he sent me up to the Bell. Here Fern Runkle and Dotty Pearl helped me to call up my friends and tell them the good news. We all remem- bered our happy days at Lower Paxton and realized the happiness that now seemed to be ours.
