Two class projects were undertaken and two successes we1'e recorded. On November Sixth, the Deep River Singers royally entertained the audience assembled to hear them. However, on .April 15 and 17 the Junior Class scored its outstanding success by presenting, Raggedy Nan. Clever work was done by the two leading characters, Eleanor Mader and Duane Ressler, while Virginia Eutsler proved herself to be one of the most outstanding comediennes to grace a Lower Paxton stage in recent years. These people were ably sup- ported by a talented cast. In other allied fields the Juniors showed their ability. Glenn Yingst captured second hon- ors in the Lower Paxton Public Speaking Contest. At the same time the Glee Club relied not only on the services of Marian Hoke as accompanist, but also on the voices of twenty members of the Junior Class. Mr. Creeger found the Eleventh Grade contributing the talents of Eugene Bell, Donald Enders and Marian Hoke to the orchestra. The school band and cheer leaders found repre- sentatives of the Junior Class in their midst. In the field of sports Co-Captain Howdy Arnold of the football team deserves special credit. This year he scored seventy-three points to lead the individual scoring in the Lower Susquehanna Football Conference, composed of twenty-three teams. This total broke the Lower Paxton record of sixty-nine established by Lester Gipe in 1940. Arnold was given plenty of support by his classmates: Kline, Magill, Mummert, Prescott, Ressler, Stough, Ber- lin, Harman and Allen. In basketball Ressler, Arnold and Kline were mainstays of the boys' Varsity while Sherwin, Gingrich, and Mader performed well for the girls' team. The baseball team is also in debt to the Juniors for the services of Magill, Prescott, Berlin, Arnold, Kline and Stough. The Juniors are following in the steps of Champions. On February 26 they pre- sented their first class project. On this occasion The Margot Dancers were well received by a large audience. In the Lower Paxton Senior High School Public Speaking Contest, Peggy Patterson, a Sophomore, took first place away from the upper classmen who were competing against her. Later Peggy represented our school in the Southern District Forensic Contest. The Music Department is particularly indebted to this class. The orchestra is aided by the contributions of Ernest Cedergren, Jacqueline Foster, Paul Geesaman, Grace Rebuck and Ruth Vifhitmoyer. In the blue and white uniforms of the band were found Wilma Grove and Paul Geesaman, while Grace Harman and Jacqueline Foster carried the Hags before the band. The Glee Club contained twelve members of the Class. In the field of sports the Sophomore Girls were most prominent. Ellen Jones, Peggy Patterson, Pauline Stahle, and Joanne Strohm captured positions on the Girls' Varsity Bas- ketball Team. For the boys Edward Daihl, Richard Devore, Richard Eldridge, Frank Metz- ler, Paul O'Neal, Julius Kenes and Ralph Levin were on the football squad. Ralph was honored by his election to the Co-Captaincy for his Junior year. In basketball the Sopho- more boys were the mainstay of the Reserve Team. In baseball Richard Devore, Frank Metzler, William Pace, and Arthur Shope were on the Varsity Squad. The Sophomore Class has Champions in the making. Page Thirty-three eil J gb x . .gif kr? Their response to the school needs was also commendable in the Magazine Campaign. Mr. Creeger's room took first place in the Junior High School by achieving 16672 of their goal, while Mr. Fisher's room took second by achieving 16577 of their goal. In the field of music many Freshmen partici- pated. Donald Swope was a member of the orchestra and of the band. Also found in the band were George Baker, Robert Harnsberger, Jack Hobaugh, Marlyn Hoover, Gerald Jef- fries, George Rein, Earl Ricker and Charles Schory. In front of all these band members came the two Freshman Majorettes, Margot Moser and Phyllis Strohm. In the Junior High Glee Club, Ethel Poorman and Margot Moser served as accompanists, while thirteen other girls participated as singers. Special credit should be given to the class orator, Phyllis Strohm, who took first place in the Junior High School Oratorical Contest. The Freshmen were also active in the field of sports. Fred Corl, Jack Eutsler, John Hor- stick, Donald Swope and Leonard Weaver were members of the Football Squad, while Jack Eutsler, Gerald Jeffries, Robert Shope, and Paul Zimmerman played on the Junior Varsity Basketball Team. They wish to thank the following groups: the faculty for help and advice, the remaining members of the Class of '42 for invaluable assistance, the underclassmen for their support and encouragement, the boosters for their loyalty to Lower Paxton and all of its institutions, and the advertisers without whose financial aid this publication would not have been possible. By virtue of this cooperation of faculty, student body, and well-wishers, we feel justly proud of this Torch since no school project has ever been completely successful without the support of all three of these groups, and no project which has enjoyed this sup- port has ever failed to be successful. We were quite a large family, seventy-four to be exact, but in spite of this fact we were able to cooperate and get along well together. During our Freshman year we organized our class. Though we did not sponsor a class project, we were a definite asset to our school. From our Freshman Class came the manager of our Boys' Basketball Team, two members of the Orchestra, eight members of the Football Team, six members of the Girls' Hockey Team, four members of the Debating Team, two members of the School Trio, and thirteen members of the Band. With the closing of our Freshman Year we looked forward to our Second Year of cherished high school life. In the fall of 1939 we returned, with perhaps, a little more enthusiasm than the year before. We were Sophomores! We presented our first class project which was, The Ritz Trumpeteersf' This year we made additions to the activities in which we participated during our Fresh- man Year. From our Sophomore Class came the editor-in-chief of the Ranger, our school paperg four members of the Patrol, six members of the Varsity P Club, six members of the Baseball Team, fifteen members of the Senior High Glee Club, also four members of the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team, as well as the manager. With the ending of this year we reached the half-way mark of our high school careers. With the coming of September 1940, we once again, returned to Lower Paxton, this time to begin the last half of our high school life. This year we were Juniors and were proud of our title. We presented two projects this year. The first, The Ambassador Quartet, composed of singers and bell ringers. The second project for this year was our Junior Class Play en- titled Aunt Letty's Niece. This was the first time our class had a chance to display its actors and actresses, and judging from the hu.ge success of the play, you may rest assured they rank among the best. The Juniors were also heard from in the magazine campaign and, though we did not win first place, we did achieve second. As Juniors, we were proud to say that the leading scorer of the basketball league was a member of our class. At the close of this year each one of us looked forward to the coming Fall. When the leaves began to turn in the Fall of 1941, we returned to our Alma Mater for the last time. At last, we had achieved the cherished rank, Seniors! Our number, however, had dwindled from seventy-four in our Freshman year, to fifty- six this year. Despite this decrease of membership, we were the largest class to graduate from Lower Paxton. 1 During this year we won first place in our magazine campaign, with the state champion sales girl in our class. Our Senior Play, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, was, by no means, a small success and was presented two nights. During the course of the year our class sponsored two socials: a Football Party and a Basketball Party. These were held in the American Legion Hall at Linglestown. Every Wednesday and Friday we fed the hungry student body and faculty with hot dogs. This year our class again felt proud to again have in its midst the leading scorer of the Basketball League. This person also set up a new record for individual scoring in the Lea- gue. With our school days drawing to a close, we will soon be obliged to part, and will no longer be able to work together as a group. However, individuals, who have shown such splendid abilities, are bound to find their place along life's pathway. And now, in parting, we wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the faculty and Alma Mater that We shall always cherish.
