This has been one of the most success ful years Lower Naches High School has ever had. While not having as large a student body or as elaborate a plant as many schools, We have tried to progress by making our activities cover a broader field than heretofore. In like manner, the staff has tried to make this Annual the best ever published by this school It is hoped that those who read this book will feel that the staff has, in a measure, succeeded in its endeavor. 'onieessyf Ni ll DEDICATION This, the fourth Lo-Na-I-Ii of the Lower Naches High School, ' is dedicated to Miss Ruth I-Ieineok ' who, for the past two years, has done much toward the devel- opment and upbuilding of our high school. Four LO-NA-HI Tl-IE ANNUAL HELEN FEDDERLY - I , EDITOR MARTIN WILSON - - ASSISTANT EDITOR HAROLD FARLEY - - - BUSINESS MANAGER GLEN LAYTON - ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGER - The Annual staff which includes the entire Senior class has Worked long and hard upon this 1928 issue of Lo-Na-Hi. An attempt has been made to make it as complete a record as possible of the year's achievements. The editors and faculty advisors have labored at great length on the organization of the Whole. The business managers have spent a great deal of time soliciting advertising. Every member of the class has contributed his share toward making the Annual interesting. This is the fourth year-book of this high school. In the past the Annual has been printed on the mimeograph. This proved to be a very practical piece of Work but on account of the immense amount of Work involved in stencil cutting and printing it Was decided this year to have the entire book printed. We Wish to thank those who have made the Annual possible-particularly the business men who gave their support. We also appreciate the many helpful suggestions and the interest and cooperation given us by our printer, the Yakima Bindery. EDITORS. LO-NA-HI Five FACULTY FRANK L. SINCOCK Superintendent GUINEVERE STOREY RUTH HEINECK Science English FRANCIS J. PYLE MILLER B. STEWART , Music and History Athletics IVADELLE TUESLEY Foreign Languages and Mathematics Sim LO-NA-HI FACULTY SNAPSHOTS FACULTY This simple narrative is the result of an absent mind and a dull subject. In writing a scathing criticism of persons you have always known as your friends and advisers, would you write Whatever happened to come to your mind? Oh, no, you Wouldn't. Who would think of having you say that this person had the habit of looking at his watch, rubbing his hands, and then saying that there was just time for one more announcement before classes passed. Would you want to embarrass a man by saying that he Was a good coach, another by openly admiring his lip-child and then mourning its decease. Be- cause a certain lady delights in having a certain group bring paper and pencil to class 3 because another is very strict and indulges in giving long lectures 5 and because still another has an ever-present smile and a fondness for radiators-it would never do to say so. As their last year in high school slips quickly by the Seniors are concentrating on their books or perhaps it would be more truthful to say the teachers, grade books. Each member of the class is anxious to receive that little Green and White book on Commencement night, emble- matic of four years of successful Work, but inwardly each is regretting that his high school days are near an end. Reverting back to the ancient custom, the Seniors held in full pomp and glory a Character day. From the flapper of 1850 to the modern ballet dancer, every variety and type of person was found in the class. Nor will the seniors forget that other cherished tradition granted only to seniors-Sneak day. The seniors have participated in many school activities. The class play Whose Little Bride Are You, was a fair example of the pep and life claimed by the class. In athletics, dramatics, music and honor society one can find many members of the senior class. As a Whole they are doing all in their power to get as much joy and happiness out of school life as possible and hope their learned teachers appreciate their efforts and understand the real meaning back of them. Members of the class have participated in both girls' and boys, basketball, baseball and track. A number of juniors have been active in band and orchestra this year and eleven of the sixteen members took part in the opcretta, Treasure Hunters. The class will carry out the tradition established last year by giving a Junior Jamboree before the close of school. This entertainment will consist of one-act plays, music and other miscellaneous numbers. Socially, the class has also been active. Two parties have been given, one a roller skating party and the other a splash party. The members of the society must maintain grades of at least ninety per cent to entitle them to belong to the organization. Students seemed to realize more than heretofore that the success of the organiz- ation depended entirely upon the interest shown by its members. The organization started off with real pep by staging a contest in selling basketball season tickets and annuals. The seniors won and received as a re- ward two gallons of ice cream and a quarter day holiday. Later on the member- ship staged a contest with Naches Student Body in selling Curtis Publishing Co. magazines. We won this contest easily. A number of meetings have been held in which routine business of the or- ganization has been transacted. Yell leaders were elected early in the year and ways and means of financing school activities discussed. As the number of school activities in the high school has grown, greater responsibilities have fallen upon the members of the organization. ' The Student Body has had the pleasure of hearing several very interesting Speakers during the year. The Friday afternoon programs put on by students and faculty have been a welcome variation from regular school routine. - MABEL COVERDALE. The idea of such a club was received very enthusiastically by the girls and a large number turned out for it. Toward the end of the year both clubs united in giving the very popular operetta, Pickles, This year the club was reorganized and took in some new members, mainly from the Freshman and Sophomore classes. At the faculty program the club made its first public appearance of the year. In March the girls and boys clubs put on the operetta, Treasure Hunters, which was very well received. The girls feel that the success of the glee club has been due very largely to the work of their director, Miss Heineck. MILDRED OLsoN. ROBERT OLSON VICE PRESIDENT THoR FossUM SECRETARY - - HOWARD GEER TREASURER .....,. FLOREN STANTON ADVISERS ........ ENTIRE FACULTY The Opportunity Club is one of the most thriving organizations in the high school. It is not often that the honor of the two highest offices in an all-high organization falls to the lot of freshmen. But like most organizations, the oflicers of this club were chosen because of their dependability. In other Words they are very regular in attending meetings. U The club meets every night after school, its sessions being limited to forty minutes. Its purpose is to give students who have gotten in bad during the day an opportunity for extra study and reflection. The club is extremely demo- cratic. All students are eligible to membership and so far as is known Mildred Christopher and Elsie Schlapkohl are the only students who have never joined. Failure to properly appreciate the opportunities offered by the club sometimes results in a student being encored. Donald Anderson holds the record, having been an attendant three nights in succession. True, the students patronize the club well, but in this connection our teachers should receive some credit for it is felt that the success of the club has very largely been due to their efforts. HELEN FEDDERLY. MUSIC CLUB The Music Club was organized in 1926 under the direction of Mr. Fussell with seven charter members. A constitution and by-laws were adopted and the membership of the club limited to fourteen. The purpose of the club is to promote greater interest in music in the high school. For the past six years the high school has maintained a band and or- chestra, rehearsing regularly as a part of the school Work. This has been done under the direction of a member of the faculty especially qualified for the Work. The membership of the club is composed of the more advanced members of band and orchestra who have attained a certain proficiency in music. However, the girls feel that they derived a great deal of benefit from the season's play. When the season opened very few letter players were left and new players were scarce as many of the girls did not turn out for the sport. The girls shared honors with the Selah girls in introducing the lastest in basketball equipment for girls-trunks. Yes, one or two folks were shocked and several others gasped just a little but the attendance was better this year than last. Next year the girls will probably not compete with outside teams. Classes in physical education are to be organized. Instead of one sport it is planned to have several sports for girls during the year. The change will probably mean that other schools in this section will also drop interscholastic basketball. This new plan may not be popular at first but it will give all the girls a chance to de- velop in athletics which will be an improvement over the present plan. ETHEL LEE. Thirty-four LO-NA-HI BASEBALL For the past few years Lower Naches has turned out baseball teams which have been among the best in the Yakima Valley. Six straight district champion- ships, second place in the valley tournament in '25 and '26, and third place in 1927 is a record hard to beat. It is safe to say that Lo-Na-Hi will place well in the play-off for the valley championship this year. The record is especially good because of the fact that other schools participating in the tournaments during the past three years have been three or four times as large as Lower Naches. This year we are endeavoring to carry on the sport in a limited way but because of the popularity of baseball and the large amount of time spent upon it, it is impossible to develop track to the fullest extent. As we go to press it is impossible to say just how much will be accomplished this year as only two invitation meets have been participated in thus far. In both the Wapato and Yakima meets, our men have placed well, winning third place for Lo-Na-Hi in each instance. Glen Layton who specializes in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and broad jump is undoubtedly one of the outstanding track men in the valley and should make a good showing in these events in the valley meet at Ellensburg, May 5th. Arthur Cuyle in the 440 yard dash and Pleasant Barrett in the high jump are improving and may place in the district meet. The relay team composed of Harold Farley, Paul Zirkle, Lester Zirkle and Glen Layton is also expected to finish well in the district meet. LESTER ZIRKLE. The announce- ment caused a mob of wailing citizens to gather about the doors of the great institution. President Noble came out with a six shooter in one hand and a sap in the other and drove them away four times. He declared that he needed less noise as the mob was spoiling his poker game. Cashier Harold Farley stated the bank would remain closed until the ofdcials were able to win some money on the bet they had placed on the prize fight to be staged next month between Kid Zirkle and Jack Johnson. Irene Hageclorn, a teller in the bank, has been arrested by Sheriff Howard Geer. Although she declared she had nothing to do with the failure of the institution it is felt that she get away with part of the funds as De- tective Moren has discovered that she bought several candy bars the day be- fore the bank failed and weighed her- self on a penny scale just before being arrested. This momentous affair drew I such a large crowd in the main street that street car traffic was blocked for two hours. New developments are ex- pected hourly in the case. BIG DAMAGE SUIT STARTS TOMORROW Thousands Will Hear Case The famous Barrett-Schlapkohl suit which has gained much publicity re- cently will commence tomorrow in the Gleed town hall with Judge Martin Wilson presiding. Pleasant Barrett, driving his 20th Century Straight Eight Sport Bug, was hit amidships by Donald Schlapkohl as he 'emerged from the Pleasant Valley road. Schlap- ' kohl is alleged to have been driving at a terific rate of speed. estimated at 13 miles per hour when the accident took place. His ford crate escaped with only the wishbone left. Barrett is suing for 550.000 damages, most of which is for the damage incurred to his slide trombone which was slightly dented by the force of the impact. David Fairbanks, lawyer for Barrett, has investigated the case and the financial condition of his client and feels that if he can win this case he should be able to retire for life after he has been paid. L. N. H. S. WINS TITLE SIX TIMES For the sixth time Lower Naches is the district baseball champion. She finished the league schedule last Fri- day by defeating Tieton in a loosely played contest, The game was called in the seventh because the home club ran out of balls and darkness was fast approaching. Lois Hui! Returns From Trip Miss Lois Huff, who has just finished a three year term singing in Barnum 8: Bailey's circus of New York, re- cently returned to this city. She states that Floren Zirkle, a contor- tionist with the same show, was her accompanist and intimates that he has improved wonderfully since he played in Assembly. Young Women Invent New Gum Ethel Lee and Helen Fedderly have just gotten a new patent on chewing gum which they have invented. It comes in small pellets and upon being moistened springs into life and chews itself saving much energy for the per- son operating it. After serving its purpose it may be again rolled up and resold at a reduced price as long as the words reconditioned gum are placed on the wrapper. So far it only comes in climax, castor oil and ginger flavors but new flavors will be manufactured soon they declare. Plan to Marry Wilford Cuyle, proprietor of Gleed Variety Store, plans to get married next month. He is keeping the matter an entire secret and no one can even guess who it is. He never did go around much with the girls so itlis hard to tell who the lucky girl is. Mabel Coverdale looks wise and while saying nothing, implies that she knows something about the affair. PROMINENT CITY OFFICIAL SIIOOTS RETIRED SECTION FOREMAN Gleed Dog Catcher Swear: He Hail Right to Murder Madalen Eschbach, Noted Dancer, Is Cause of Scrap Eschbach, Wash., April 23, 1928. CBy Special Correspondentb. The discovery of Paul Libby in a half-crazed condi- tion caused by a bullet lying where his brain was supposed to be, resulted in the uncovering of one of the most re- markable pieces of scandal ever known to occur in this state. Libby, who has just retired with a fortune from a-job as Section foreman for the N. P. railroad, declared Donald Anderson, odicial dog catcher of Esch- bach, a suburb of Gleed, shot him three times in the head. The first two shots glanced off his skull but the third found a crack and fell in, causing a temporary insane condition to exist. Anderson claims that Libby had alienated the affections of his Hance, Madelin Eschbach, so that she would not attend the movie with him. When Anderson questioned the retired sec- tion foreman about the affair he was called many vile names such as sap, boob and poor fish. This so excited his temper that he shot Libby, then ran to his motorcycle and rode to the home of his fiance at Eschbach, where he was later arrested. More details will be given out by Chief of Police, Ermol Howe, after he has had due time to investigate. Sheriff Howe is at present away from the city in charge of a group of boy scouts and did not consider the incident of enough im- portance to demand a hasty return. Young Man Commits Suicide Deputy Sheriff Brons, while wander- ing around in an alley back of the Big Y warehouse, found the body of a young man who was afterwards identi- fied as being RobertKershawsuspended from a tree by a piece of fish line. A note was found on the body which stated that life was not worth living. The sudden desire to end all is sur- mised to have been caused by the actions of his fiance, Alma Farrar. It is reported that Alma allowed Thomas Gerald Wilson to accompany her on the piano when she played a violin solo at a recent grange meeting.
