How- ever, in 1917, Moreland Township was divided into Upper and Lower Moreland. This division is indicated on the shield by the Pennypack Creek, a historic stream bordering lour community. On the banks of the Pennypack is the grist mill, symbolizing the early industry of this section. On the lower half of the shield we find the scroll, which characterizes the early means of exchanging thought by the written and printed word, and the growing oak, symbolizing development and strength. Mounted on the top of the shield is a rampant lion taken from the crest of the Moore family. Nicholas Moore, a member of this family, received from William Penn the original grant of land of Moreland Manor, later to become Moreland Township. Supporting the shield is a Grecian lamp shedding rays of education and enlightenment. The entire seal is bound by an endless ribbon representing unity of purpose and effort. On this ribbon the identity of the seal is inscribed. ,,..- ES OZIOLUQI' WOPQKGIIJ SCAOOK Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania 'Zl -yu. ...I -5, BOARD OF SCHOOL DIRECTORS Mr- I- M' Imran Mr. Wm. D. Dixie came to L.M. in '47 from Olney High School.Give him a pipe and a certain yellow jeepster and he's content. Dixie likes basketball, but Cahemll detests girls. He in- tends to become rich and be a hennit, but after seeing Dixie in the senior play, on the football field, and on the baseball diamond, we can't see him in the role of a hermit. JOSEPHINE AVENDER Commercial Rockledge, Pa. Pretty Jo is everyone's friend- She stays with you until the end. jo was very active in basketball, having been on the varsity team for three years. She was a member of the Safety, Glee and Shop Clubs. jo's special likes include sports and secretarial work. Although Eric's plans for the future are not definite now, he looks forward to finding a career as he pursues his college work. MARIORIE A. BELL Commercial Feasterville, Pa. Blue eyes and golden hair l Are things that make Marjie so fair. Marjorie was one of our most quiet members of the class, but that didn't keep her from being an active, helpful class member. She played intramural basketball and softball, was chief typist for the yearbook, and a member of the art depart- ment for the Lion's Roar. Glee Club, Safety Club and Art Club were a few of her other activities. Marjorie will continue to be quietly efficient in a secretarial position. GLADYS JOAN BIRCH Commercial Rockledge, Pa. General ANTHONY J. Sparky is the ladies' man, And pleases all when'er he can. GUSTOVE ADOILPH BOEHN General Trevose, Pa. He claims that homework is his pet peeve, But he will miss it when he has to leave. Although Ace usually thought of school as one of life's necessary evils, he participated in class sports, made the varsity baseball team, and joined Hi-Y and Glee Clubs. When and if Ace joins the Navy, as he threatens, he'll be able to add to his coin and stamp collections. ROBERT CARSON Academic Langhorne, Pa. Lar e streams from little fountains How, Tall oaks from little acorns grow. If we can judge by Bob's interests and activities, we pre- dict he will be one of the scientists of the future. Cars, radios, and all things scienritic are Bob's meat . Being a member of the Science and Typing Clubs and special operator of the movie projector occupied most of Bob's leisure time. CATALDO Huntingdon Valley, Pa. All through our high school years Sparky has been one of our leaders. His being class president for three years and vice-president one, a varsity football and basketball player, a member of the senior play cast, and photography editor for the Elmleo-these are just a few of the things that have proved Spa.rky's ability. His friendly way and good humor have won him many friends. 1 ALAN O. Academic Fun-loving, handsome Al, Is to everyone a real pal. Alan, the capable editor-in-chief of our yearbook, was also a member of varsity basketball and manager of the football squad. We shall remember him, too, as one of our Glee Club members, and an active participant in class CP.O.D.J discussions. We wish him success in his college work and his career to be. LEON JACK DEVOY General Leon's not interested in a pile of books- He's more concerned about girls with good looks. Sunny weather and dating girls keep Leon happy and smil- ing. His chief activities in school included varsity football, Glee Club and I-li-Y Club. Since radio and television are Leon's main interests, he looks forward to a position with R.C.A. HELEN ELIZABETH DANGLER Commercial Rockledge, Pa. Helen has such pretty hair, And never leaves anyone in despair. Serving as typist for Lion's Roar and Elmleo and being a member of Glee, Shop, and Safety Clubs kept Helen busy. Among Helen's many likes are men, dancing, football games, and drugstores. In her more serious moments, Helen concen- trates on those commercial subjects so necessary to her future secretarial work. DECH Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Feasterville, Pa. GLORIA LILLIAN DIETERLE Commercial Rockledge, Pa. Dingle likes to dance and sing- joins in the fun on everything. Dingle, who loves parties, good times, and dancing is equally happy being domestic since cooking and crocheting rate high as hobbies. Her choice of activities included Tri- Hi-Y, Safety, and Glee Clubs. Ding1e's attractive appearance and pleasant disposition are only two of her assets. ELIZABETH ANN DORMANN Commercial Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Likeable Betty, happy and gay, Always has a joke for any old day. Dancing, swimming, traveling, Crocheting, and cooking- all of these add spice and variety to Betty's happy life. Al- though the Safety Patrol and Glee Club were Betty's special activities, she was always one ready and willing classmate, complete with a good disposition. EDNA MAE DURRWACHTER Commercial Feasterville, Pa. Energetic Edna Mae Does her best in every way. Edna Mae was on the varsity hockey team, enjoyed playing class baseball and basketball, and was a member of the Safety Patrol and the Tri-Hi-Y. She likes sports and music fbut not jazzj. Edna Mae looks forward to a secretarial posi- tion after high school. With her ability, thorouglmess, and good disposition, we would highly recommend her. LORRAINE JOHANNA ENGLAND Commercial Trevose, Pa. She isn't from England, nor is she from Peru All she would tell us was, l'm new. Blond hair, blue eyes, plus a very pretty smile are charac- teristics of our classmate Lorraine. Dependable Lorraine is always handy with a laugh in a boring English class. Al- though this young lady rates as our No. 1 comedian, her serious interest is in dramatics, in which she excels. Dancing is Lorraine's favorite pastime. We know Lorraine will make a success of whatever she tackles in the future. CLARENCE JOHN GEIGER Academic ROClClCClg6, Pa. His theory for intelligence Is just plain common sense. By being on the A honor roll with almost monotonous regularity, Clarence added to our class prestige. His interest and talent in classical music, also put him 'way above most of us mediocre musicians Qincluding Wilckej. Although home- work, red tape, and routine would often exasperate him, Clarence usually took things in his stride and came through smiling. ANTHONY GIOVANNANGLO General Bethayres, Pa. To Giovannanglo he says, Oh, no! , So we gave him the nickname, Bobo. Bobo is a good-natured, friendly, easy-going fellow who played two years of varsity basketball and baseball besides participating in all class sports. Tony's idea of heaven features pretty girls and plenty of fires for the H. V. volun- teers. 'I'ony's real interest for the future is to start a florist business of his own. ISABELLA GRAVES Commercial Trevose, Pa. A pleasant miss is this quiet gal. . . She really is a very fine pal. Isabel, our cute class blusher, enjoyed class sports and always gave us a good laugh in gym class. Is believes that dancing and eating spaghetti are her favorite pastimes. We have found that competition is what she does not like. Could there be any connection between that and her special interest in a certain red head? FRANK HAEGLE Academic Rockledge, Pa. We grant, although he had much wit, He was very shy in using it. Photography, woodwork, and adding to his collection of basketball clippings kept Frank occupied outside of school time. In school activities, his chief interests were Science Club and intramural sports. In his quiet way, Frank enjoyed all those things that make up our school days. sa? MABLE AMANDA HENRY Academic Bryn Athyn, Pa. A happy disposition, a great big smile, She is our idea of someone worthwhile. Mable, good natured and witty, can be serious when and if necessary. Basketball was her sport, playing guard three years on the varsity and captain in the senior year. She was also the capable president of the Safety Patrol. Mable likes concert music and beautiful homes. After graduation she wants to become a bi-lingual secretary, and if we know Mable, she'll be a good one. FRANKLIN JARRETT Commercial Huntingdon Valley, Pa. R ' h 'l , HZP2f.ffI'S'2fhZ.5 12222 Tif1, 21'i ?.is might. Ike is what we call him and he'll always be remembered as a tall, athletic, likeable young fellow. He was president of the Hi-Y Club, co-business manager of the Elmleo, and a Lion's Roar member for two years. Let's not forget the main item about this handsome blond, for he captained both the basketball and baseball teams of '49. person she is. HARRY F. KAMNIK Academic Langhorne, Pa. Easy to get along with Harry, But in English he's determined not to tarry. Harry usually has an answer if not the answer to most questions, but he's never been able to find a satisfactory answer to the query, Why study English? However, that doesn't keep Harry from enjoying life, joking with the best of them, and with good nature, generally taking things as they come. joan's an artist, that is so, And also a very good friend to know. A likeable, dependable gal Who is everybody's pal. JOAN PORT JOHNSON Commercial Feasterville, Pa. With all this plus painting and clothes designing as hobbies, busy joan always found time to be sociable and enjoy her many friends. After graduation, joan hopes to study costume design. DOROTHY HELEN JONES Academic Rockledge, Pa. Always a sports enthusiast, Dot limited her active partici- pation to basketball, being a varsity member in her senior year. She was a member of the Glee Club, Safety Patrol, and on the yearbook staff. Eating, giggling, baseball, and talking are some of the things that make Dot the happy-go-lucky ' ,gay 1 VERNA JUNE LEEDOM Commercial Bethayres, Pa. Vivacious Verna full of fun. . . Her presence is enjoyed by everyone. Verna always seemed to be able to find time for just one more activity. Glee Club, Safety Patrol, serving on class committees, assisting with class plays, typing for the Lion's Roar, being on the Elmleo staff kept Vema busy when she wasn't leading cheers or dashing down the hockey field to tally a goal for the team. DONALD LEHUQUET Academic Oakford, Pa. Since Don possesses a two-track mind, Answers for him are easy to find. joe is one of those easy-going, good-natured fellows with an even disposition. Glee, Hi-Y and Safety Club were joe's chief interests... Although traveling is his hobby and sleeping is his major interest, joe played on the varsity baseball team for two years and basketball during his senior year. ALFRED PAUL LIEBOLD, JR. General Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Liz with his cute little curls Likes to be where there are girls. Liz can check off three years of varsity basketball and baseball to his credit plus football in his senior year. We can check off even more to Liz's credit-his flair for art, his participation in Glee Club and his unexpected comments. With his easy, likeable ways, Liz will never want for friends. RICHARD GR IFFITH MENGEL General Rockledge, Pa. Always has a bright smile That makes everyday worth while. Rich's participation in varsity basketball, football, and baseball should be good experience for the fulfillment of his ambition-to be coach of athletics. His interests weren't limited to sports, however, since he was a member of the Senior play cast, Glee Club, Student Council, and Hi-Y. Classical music, too, is among Rich's likes, but homework was definitely not. Rich's pleasant personality and easy as- surance will help him along the road to success. PAULINA MARY MESSINA Academic Huntingdon Valley, Pa. She says she wants to ice skate All the way out of the state. Attractive and dependable, Paulina will always be re- membered for her good service as manager of the hockey squad and her active participation in Safety Patrol and Stu- dent Council. She is very fond of ice skating and new clothes, with traveling as her special interest. uniform. he always will. THOMAS NEELY General Rockledge, Pa. Because he lends a helping hand, He'll always remain a ladies' man. Although Tom assures us that he dislikes school in any form, he joined in the work and play of sclnol life in a creditable way. Safety, Typing and Glee Clubs claimed him as a member, and we will remember him as the doctor in the senior play. As time goes on, Tom might lose his blush, but not h.is'friend1y, sociable manner. WILLIAM LAWRENCE MILLER General Rockledge, Pa. Handsome Billy Miller- He is our lady killer! Happy-go-lucky Bill will always be remembered for his friendly manner, his big smile, and for his two years varsity football and active participation in all class sports. Singing bass in Glee Club as well as the Choir group, and being a Hi-Y member were his chief interests in school.. When the cap and gown are put aside, Bill might don a brand new Navy MICHAEL NATALE, JR. Academic Rockledge, Pa. Red-headed and brown-eyed Mike ls definitely a fellow we all like. Mike has always made friends easily. It could be that smile and good disposition, to say nothing of his wavy ted hair and pleasing appearance. Although Mike admits that sleeping is one of his special interests, we know of several others, such as, soccer, baseball, and cars. Mike never seems to hurry but he always seems to get there-and we hope li BARBARA JEANNE PAUL C0mmCfCi21 Trevose, Pa. She dances like a leaf, sings like a thrush, She's bold as the north wind, and sweet as a blush. There are many complimentary things we could say about Babs. We will remember with pleasure and pride her four years as class secretary, her work in the Tri-Hi-Y where she served as secretary and later president,, her acting ability as seen in our two class plays, and her playing right inner on the hockey championship team of 1948. No wonder Babs was voted most popular! Let's not forget she also was our May Queen. ERMA LOUISE PENNYPACKER Commercial Langhorne, Pa. Erma is a cheerful lass- The shortest member of our class. Our friend Erma was always ready to lend a hand and it was always an eflicient one. Herinterests and talents were varied-ranging from her work as assistant editor of Elmleo, her membership in Glee, Safety, and Tri-Hi-Y Clubs, to her playing halfback on the hockey team for two years. Although Erma insists she dislikes homework, she always was one of our A honor roll students. JOHN PINKERTON, JR. Academic Rockledge, Pa. Never study, never worry- Take life easy. What's the hurry. Happy-go-lucky john, always has room for one more in his station wagon. If ever you want a ride to the games, just ask Pinky . He liked sports, playing baseball, and football, but never mention homework to this lad. After graduation john would- like to make the Navy his career. Perhaps john's experience with sailboats and races on the briny deep had something to do with this choice of career. MIRIAM A. Academic Bethayres, Pa. PLETCHER Willing to lend a helping hand Thatls why we think Mimi's grand. Friendly, dependable Mimi is always full of fun and ready to offer a helping hand. She played varsity hockey for four years and basketball for three years, was a cheerleader, and had a leading role in the junior and Senior plays. Among her likes are sports and school, but fickle girls and onions are strictly out. As editor-in-chief of the Lion's Roar and a member of the Elmleo business staff, Mim showed her execu- tive ability. She was chosen May Day attendant for two years. Her ambition? To prepare for a career in teaching physical education. ROBERT EARL PLETCHER General Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Never too busy to lend an ear- Capable, courteous, full of good cheer. Although we'll especially remember Bob as Willie in our senior play, Bob's interests were chiefly in sports, where he played not only on class teams, but on both the basketball and football varsity squads. For his clubs, Bob chose Glee and Hi-Y. Even though he thought high school lwould have been more pleasant without homework, English, and math, Bob didn't let such necessary evils spoil his fun or his disposition. RICHARD SIMPSON General Trevose, Pa. He leaves us memories to cherish and keep And bids us to smile, as he did, not weep. Chuck is our class comedian. Someday he's going to Hollywood and coach some of the movie stars. Other than acting he has interests such as soccer, baseball, swimming, and girls. He leaves school still puzzling teachers as to how he learned 78 pages of a three act play but couldn't learn two pages of homework. JOSEPH SLOSS Academic Rockledge, Pa. joe likes hockey, wrestling and the rest Bur he thinks baseball and cars are best. joe's best friends tell us that he shows real enthusiasm for ice hockey games, wrestling matches, and repairing cars, without ever losing his quiet manner. In school Joe was more of an observer than a participant in some of the fun and hi- larity, but he was active enough as third baseman on the varsity baseball team and in the Science Club. For any further details about this well-liked classmate of ours, Xconsult his friend, Stoltz! .ww 5 Fai htktuil ROLAND STOL TZ Academic Feasterville, Pa. Riding on flat of rim, His car does all the talking for him. Roland can nearly always be found working on cars and he's always ready to put up ten good reasons why Fords are better cars than Chevrolets. We shall never forget Roland for his ability to think up good questions. Never let it be said that Roland didn't try to trip up Mr. Slaybaugh. Roland's other chief interest was baseball, and when he wasn't playing it, he was reading about it. JOSEPHINE OLIVE TROTTER Academic Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Quiet and contented from head to toe, Maybe that's why we like her so. jo is our quiet, likeable type who always is ready and willing to help. She played varsity hockey in her senior year and was active in Glee and Safety Clubs. Her special in- terest is to be a teacher. JEAN MARILYN WANDALL Academic Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Happy and gay in a winning way, We all know she'll be on top someday. jean enjoys lots of different things, like bowling, winter sports, and saving souvenirs of dances and other good times. We have found, too, that jean has the ability to do lots of different things, such as, being artist for the Lion's Roar, acting in the senior play, treasurer of Tri-Hi-Y, and literary editor of the Elmleo. She was a May Day attendant in her senior year. We're quite sure this attractive, popular class- mate of ours will be successful in whatever she does in the future. MAUDIE A. WANDALL Commercial Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Maudie is quite petite, And no one is so very sweet. Cute, petite Maudie came to L. M. from Media School in 1940 and has been a class asset ever since. Being assistant Art Manager of the Elmleo plus working for the art department of the Lion's Roar kept Maudie on the go, but she found time to be a member of the Glee, Art, and Safety Clubs. We pre- dict a sunny future for Maudie in a secretarial career. PHILIP OTTO WIDING Academic Huntingdon Valley, Pa. A little noise now and then ls relished by the best of men. Lower Moreland really gained in many ways when Phil joined L. M.,'way back in the second grade. As a capable and willing worker, Otto served his class and school as business manager of both the Elmleo and Lion's Roar, Stu- dent Council and Hi-Y member, bell boy, and class president in his senior year. He captained the football team and was a key man in varsity basketball. Whatever Otto sets out to do, we know it will be done thoroughly, efficiently, and fairly. NORMAN JOHN WILCKE Academic Rockledge, Pa. On Wilcke's list, music rates number one- Give him a sax and watch the fun! Wilk is sociable and talkative, with lots of initiative. Basketball, baseball, plus all class sports took up much of his school time, but he still found room for Glee, Safety, Hi-Y and Orchestra. Wilk's main hobby is playing his sax, but the serious aim is to go to college to become a physical ed. teacher. the most memorable. EARL C. ZIMMERMAN Academic Rockledge, Pa. A cheery smile and a twinkle in his eye Make Zip an all-around guy. Here is a fellow who spends more time having fun, dating girls, and spending money than on the more serious things of life. We hope he'll always be that fortunate throughout life. Zip likes soccer, basketball, and summer sports. He was a member of science, Hi-Y, and Typing Clubs and the Lion's Roar Staff. He proved his acting ability in our junior play and was always ready to lend a helping hand in other class activities. They showed'good sportsmanship, ability to take defeat, and a fine spirit of team play. It is our hope that more students will take a greater interest in football next year, and may all the games be victories for Lower Moreland. The members of the football squad this year were as follows: Back Row - C. Raudenbusch, L. Auerweck, Ass't. Managers, J. Hastings, R. Hoffman, D. Kurz, I. Bell, R. jones, L. Hockenbury, F. All the girls practiced and played with the spirit, determination, and cooperation needed to bring victory after victory to L. M. Having eight wins and one loss to their credit, they reached the final game of the season. Since Hatfield had 8 wins and 1 tie, that was a game that had to be won if L.M. was to win the championship. It was either Hatfield or L. M., and at the half, the score stood 1-1. just eight minutes before the final whistle, Margie Leliuquet received a pass and ran over half the length of the field to tally that all important goal. The squad consisted of Captain joan Wolfinger, Mamie Tilghman, Verna Leedom, Marjorie LeHuquet, Barbara Paul, Miriam Pletcher, Anna Gengen- bach, Clementine 'Angelo, Josephine Trotter, Erma Pennypacker, Edith Trotter, Peggy Campoli, joan DiGirolamo, Edna Mae Durrwachter, Mary Beth Croxall, Eleanor Hyndman, joan Woodson, and Nancy Zill. Pauline Messina was manager, Charlotte Frey, assistant manager. To these able players and their coaches, Miss Crowe and Miss Allshouse, go our congratulations for putting L. M. on top in the hockey league. L. M. 4 North Wales 1 L. M. 5 Buckingham 2 L. M. 6 Springfield 0 L. M. 2 Whitpain 0 L. M. l Hatfield 2 L. M. 3 North Wales O L. M. 2 Buckingham 0 L. After thirteen wins and only one loss each for both L. M. and Southampton in their regular league contests, it was a real fight-to-the-hnish type of game that put L. M. again at the top of the Lower Montco group. However, all through the season, and not just in this critical contest, the L. M. team kept well ahead, not only in scoring but in good team play and sportsmanship. Led by Captain Ike Jarrett and coached by Mr. Robinson, these are the fellows who helped bring this championship to our school: P. Widing, N. Wilcke, A. Giovannangelo, P. Liebold,A.Cata1do,A. With the change in the league ruling, the girls' varsity was limited to six games, just one each with the six league teams. Not being able to play each team twice considerably reduced the girls' chances for another lead and made a rather lean season for Coach Allshouse's fine group. However, the girls packed into their six games enough pep and fighting spirit for a longer, stronger season, and maintained an enviable record for the year. The varsity girls, captained by Mable Henry, included: J. Avender, J. Wolfinger, D. jones, M. Plet- cher, M.LeHuquet, N. Riley, J. DiGiro1amo, M. Campoli, A. Gengenbach, C. Giovannangelo, Woodson, M.
