The various machines represented on the section dividers and liners are examples of the innovations in the mechanical world of science. In order, to symbolize properly the conquest of space, two concepts of the universe are presented by the artwork: first, the antiquated idea of the heavens enveloped in myth or legend and second, the present idea of space, which stimulates exploration and ultimate conquest. Each divider portrays a constellation whose myth is metaphorically related to its respective section: ACTIVITIES - Orion the hunter - symbolizing the search for new areas of interest and accomplishment. ATHLETICS - Hercules the mighty - symbolizing strength and endurance. ' UNDERCLASSMEN - Gemini the twins - symbolizing young people working together, growing in wisdom and strength. SENIORS - 'LLeo the lion - symbolizing strength and leadership. FACULTY - Cepheus the king - symbolizing guidance and direction. The modern idea of space and prospective interplanetary travel is represented on the cover and the opening pages. By portraying a few of the mechanical advancements of the past decade and by symbolizing the modern concept of space, the ENCI-1IIunIoN has attempted to capture the mood of the changing times -pride in past accomplishments and hope mixed with uncertainty for the future.
