The sfaff of fhe I957 Enchiridion searched for a long fime for a fheme fhaf would represenf all phases of school life and af fhe same fime would bring memories of sfudy and fel- lowship fo fhe seniors affer fhey leave Lower Merion. We found fhe fheme in shoes -fhe pounding of loafers and saddle shoes on fhe bridge, fhe swish of high-heeled shoes on a dance floor, fhe sharp cliclc of cleafs on concrefe before foofball pracfice. Af fhe opening of school in Sepfember, fhe walls of Lower Merion echoed fhe caufious foofsfeps of fhe incoming sophomores and fhe greefings of refurning iuniors and seniors. The full populafion was evidenf on fhe crowded buses fhaf fransporfed sfudenfs from Penn Wynne and Cynwyd buf forced fhe people nearer school fo wear ouf addifional shoe leafher. The main office was adiusfing ifself fo fhe onslaughf of sfudenfs demanding schedule changes and fo fhe full sfaff of feachers wifh fheir many responsibilifies. Lafer in fhe fall fhe band framped in fhe halls before 8:25 and focused exfra-curricular enfhusiasm on fhe gridiron as cleafed shoes carried fhe foofball feam fo vicfory over Radnor, fhe climax of fhree years wifhouf losing a single game. Many days of cake sales and nickel col- , .:i .lg lecfions financed fhe Chrisfmas parfy fo which fhe Chrisf's Home children arrived fo sfuff fhemselves wifh food, laugh af fhe gyrafions of high school sfudenfs frying fo amuse fhem. and waif apprehensively for fhe foofsfeps of Sanfa Claus. Dancing fo rhyfhmic music, fapping feef of fwo excellenf bands and crowning of fhe Queen of Emerald Cify enfranced many Merionifes for a memorable evening af fhe Senior Prom. ln February mass rallies focused fhe spoflighf on fhe scuffle of baslcefball snealrers in fhe Downs Gym, in fhe spring franfic preparafions involving numberless frips fo and from fhe gym furned fhe carnival info ifs usual hecfic and huge success. Throughouf fhe year musically falenfed people from oufside and school groups enferfained in assemblies and chapels. Somehow, in addifion fo fhese acfivifies, sfudenfs frudged fheir way fhrough fhe infellecfual world and absorbed fhe value for fan x and fhe rules againsf run-on senfences from fhe books habifually slung under one arm.
