We will see how these activities developed our personalities, brought out our talents and helped us enjoy a fuller life. We will remem- ber the many happy carefree days we spent and the many good times we had with our schoolmates. We publish this year book with the hope that it may help keep these memories alive. S i xth 5 Senior C lass History On the beautiful morning of August 30, 1943 a strange incident was taking place in Lower Mahanoy,Township High School. At the entrance to the magnificent building of education stood a group of green Freshmen. Our knees trembled, our brows were furrowed with anxiety. Our lives had suddenly become rich and bountiful. Ahead of us lay many trials and tribulations. Many of our class members were to become restless and drop off along the way. When we entered our Freshman year there were thirty-four mem- bers in our class. The following people withdrew from our class at the end of the term: Boyd Lenker, Clair Border, Lamar Heintzelman, Eve- lene Ramer. Thus ended the Freshman year. Then came our Sophomore year, the word Sophomore meaning wise fools which no other class could have deserved more readily than ours. The following people withdrew from the class at the end of the term: George Zeiders, Annabelle Schaffer, Audrey Latshaw, which left twenty-seven members in the class. Thus ended the Sophomore year. Our Junior year held a little more excitement for us because of our Junior class play, which was entitled Silas Sniidge from Tiirnip Ridge. Our play proved such a success, it was booked for a second performance for the American Legion. Before the term of our Junior class began, Dean Troutman left to join the Navy. We received one new member in our class, Leon Hooper. This completed our Junior year. This, our Senior year, we are very far advanced. We have already held our Senior class play which was entitled Life Begins At Sixteen. Before the term of our Senior year began Leon Hooper left our class to join the Marines. We received one new member in our class, Lucille Witmer. We are looking forward to many more exciting events of this, our Senior year. -Doris Schlegel CLASS OFFICERS President .......,........ .......,.....,...........,.,...,,....,........,....,....., D EAN BOHNER Vice President ...............,..... , .,..,.,.. In order to see the picture more distinctly, I take you to Nutburg, a small town, somewhere in the United States. As We step off our chartered plane we see lovely Lenore Williams, an air hostess for the T. W. A. air lines, come out to greet us. We are taken to The Hotel De La Plaza, where Leroy Hain is the efficient clerk. After we are settled and rested from our tiresome journey we go down to dinner, where Roxie Leitzel and Gladys Shaffer are waitresses. During dinner we see a floor show featuring Doris Miller, singer for the famed Kepner orchestra. The show was very good. Honest! The next morning after a restful night, we start out on our journey again. We go down to the business district of town. We see the law oliices of Regina Lenker. Next door is a garage in which we see Lee Straub working as a mechanic. Down in the next block we see a peachy beauty shoppe, owned by Lucille Witmer. Then we see Troutman's Meat Market, where Marion Romberger is working as a secretary. Next is a large business firm where Fern Witmer is a secretary, and Jean Rothermel is a scientist. Margery Snyder is working for the Westinghouse Cor- poration. I understand George Attinger hasn't chosen any career as yet, but we see him working on various part-time jobs. Glenn Troutman is Sales Manager for the Mi1ler's Store. Hm! What do we smell? That's right. Candy. Bob Gair is tighten- ing the nuts in peanut brittle. We visit the hospital where Jennie Engle is a telepehone operator, Joann Gar- rett is a private secretary, and Doris Schlegel is a nurse. Next we go to the residential section of town, where we see Clover, Esther, and Pauline keeping house for their beloved husbands. Out further in the country, Dean Bohner has a large farm. He has ten hired men working for him. As we move to the other side of town, we see Rosie Boyer working as a riveter for the ship yards. Out on the dock, we see Delmor Wirt putting out in his small fishing boat. Well, well, well, the U. S. S. Snapdragon is docking. What a surprise. Captain Croutharmel and Lieutenants Byerly and Harris are just coming down the gang plank. ' As all the class is together now in one town, I shall leave you. You have seen the future and I hope you will be satisfied with your careers. Any time you need advice, come to: THE WISE OLD OWL, Joann Garrett and Arvin Croutharmel. 15 - .. Every two weeks on a Friday afternoon forty-nine pupils stream over to the gymnasium humming fami- liar songs as To Each His Own or Give Me Five Minutes More , and eager to get their feet moving to the rhythmic music pouring from a portable phonograph. Each member contributes his share by paying monthly dues, the money being used to purchase new records. This being the first year for the organization, we are all eager to make it a success so that it may be continued in the future. The group is already planning social gatherings, the main event being a Spring Formal. 23 Junior Class Play ir 'lr SILAS SMIDGE FROM TURNIP RIDGE ' by JAY TOBIAS ' Presented by THE CLASS OF LOWER MAHANOY TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL Directed by MRS. J oann Garrett Synopsis Silas Smidge, once a poor boy, returns after thirty years to give the home town a surprise and a treat. His entry is a sensation, for he comes by airplane and drops in via parachute, but miscalculates slightly, landing on the cowshed of Deacon McPheeters, the stingiest man in town, with disaster to the flimsy structure and the skinny bovine occupant. All this happens offstage, but is sufficiently brought out in dialogue and action to lend effect to the chief character and give a rapid send-off to a play which has everything that the best rural dramas ever had or should have. No sooner do they bring Silas back from the debris of the cow residence, than begins the unfoldment of a plot of comedy, romance, heart interest, and strong dramatic situations. Silas is one of those country boys who has gone to the city and made good. Indeed not? He arrives from Tur- nip Ridge, County Clay in Iowayg is rural to the core and redolent of the soil, but is as foxy and resourceful as can be, but a lovable character. An appealing spinster, sympathetic and opposed to gossip, is balanced by an- other of the opposing type. 24 Senior Class Play LIFE BEGINS AT SIXTEENH by HILDA MANNING Presented by THE CLASS OF LOWER MAHANOY TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL Directed by MRS. Paul and Frannie Hollis, a pair of pranksters, call in the assistance of the Secret Seven, an organ- ization composed of their friends, who plan to revolutionize the work- ings of Mr. Hollis' shoe store. Their plan involves having live models exhibit the shoes and obtaining a good orchestra for the affair. The sale itself was not a success, but a business man, impressed by these wide- awake youngsters, offers to buy the store and save the day, just as Mr. and Mrs. Hollis return from Havana. 25 Band Clarinets Long, Rolan Martz, Barbara Phillips, Nancy Snyder, Clarence Zerbe, Donald Trombones Bohner, Paul Byerly, Hugh Napp, Richard Schlegel, Paul Shaffer, Donald Spotts, Vance Cornets Hepner, Joseph Snyder, Cleon Band Directrress-Elizabeth T. T. tradition we had a Christmas party on December 23. However the committee thought it would be much better to have it in the evening. The auditorium was lavishly decorated with green and red which was draped about the windows, doors, and overhead. Pine boughs banked the stage and a huge tree was placed on the main floor. And of course, there was mistletoe. We played games and the stage was nicely decorated for dancing. Later in the evening we exchanged gifts. The gifts were hidden in the bleachers with our names on a string extended out from each little hiding place. After each one received their gifts, refreshments were served by the faculty. To close an evening of enjoyment we turned off all the lights ex- cept those on the tree and sang Christmas carols. Doris Miller and Fern Witmer sang a duet O Little Town of Bethlehem and Miss Kolvick sang a solo In Old Judea. After we sang all the carols we knew, we went home full of the Christmas spirit. The following day we placed everything in order for the Junior High School party which was held Tuesday afternoon. The same tradi- tion was followed and everyone had a happy time and received beautiful gifts. it 'lr School F air One of the interesting and educational events of the year was the School Fair held October 18, 19, 20, 1946.
