Brief History Brrgadler General Chauncey L Fenton VS e are proud to present at this time a brief hrstory of one of our rllustrrous alumni Chauncey I Fenton Brigadier Generrl bnrted States Army Retired General Fenton yy as born at Edinburg Layyrence County Penn sylyanra on January 14 1880 In his youthful days he attended the Grammar School and High School at Loyyellyrlle Ohio He was ap pointed to the Un1ted States Mrlrtary Academy by the Honorable R W Taylor from the 18th drstrrct State of Ohio and entered the Mrlrtary Academy as '1 cadet rn June 1900 He yy on his appointment rn a com petrtron examrnatlon held at Alliance Ohio rn the Sprrrrg of 1899 tyy enty three competing As a cadet at the Military Academy he dis trngurshed himself by achreyrng th ranks of Corporal and Sergeant rn the Corps of Cadets and also bv being the president of the YMCA He graduated from the Unrted States Mrlrtary Academv rn June 1904 with the drstrnctron of ranking la rn a class of 124 members and upon graduation yyas assigned as a 2nd Lieutenant rn the Artrllery Corps United States Army General Fentons military seryrce yvas one of great drstrnctron Hrs yersatrlrtv and adaptability to the many tasks confronting him earned the esteem and admiration of the superior officers under whom Fenton yyas ordered back to the Mrlrtary Academv to become an rn structor rn the Department of Mathematics Hrs performance of duty rn thrs respect formed the background for hrs later seryrce rn different capacities at the Mrlrtary Academy During the vears from 1910 to 1914 General Fenton rendered splendrd seryrce rn the Coast Artrllery Corps in manv capacities a feyy of yy hrch are listed Commandlng Of frcer of Coast Artrllery Companies Adlutant of the Coast Defenses of Chesapeake Bay Instructor rn the Coast Artrllery School and Professor of Mrlrtary Science and Tactics at the Argrcultural and Vlechanrcal College of Texas In June 1917 he yy as detailed to duty with the Gen eral Staff of the Army and rn thrs capacity yyas connected with the Brrtrsh and French Armres as a member of the staff of Mayor General Hugh L Scott He partrcrpated rn the mayor operatrons of the 61st Drvrsron of the Brrtrsh Army In April 1918 he became a member of the staff of the Chief of Artrllery First Army AEF and seryed rn that capacity untrl October 1918 During thrs period he sayy consrderable action and partrcrpated rn the Arsne Marne St Mrhrel Meuse Argonne and Somme Offensrye operatrons He later sery ed as Chief of the Artrl lery Information Seryrce of the Second Army untrl December 1918 Folloyyrng these assignments he returned to the Operatrorrs Dryrsron of the War Department General Staff rn Washington D C untrl August 1922 It yy as rn the performance of thrs latter duty yyhrch yy as so out starrdrng that he yy as ayy arded the Drstrngurshed Seryrce Medal by the YVar Department l ' s - V 'fa ' ' ' 1 y u ' n ' 6 Q Y , 1 4' T I . . , c V J. y c , 4 uv, I uf 1 y 4- ' 1 v N r v 9 ' tv w 'fy 1 1 -Av , ' 'w vv vvs, Y S L 7 .
