History of Lowellville High School W9 A L z C900 H S HKU and lbw LOW The first organized school in Lowellville was in the year 1833 and was located near the old railroad crossing in West Lowellville . . . the teacher was paid 355.00 per month, with the privilege of boarding around .... the next building was on the Fenton farm, North of town. The next was at the corner of Mc- Gill and Wood Street .... again up the Bedford Hill to the first turn near an old coal dump .... then later back to Wood Street at the present site of Kroeck's Garage, this a brick building, two rooms .... used several years .... then a new four- room frame building built where the North Side School now stands . . . .rather complete, with belfry, bell, etc.. . . .on February 16, 1904, this building was destroyed by fire .... school held in Town Hall and Churches until February 1905 when the building we knew, for so long, as the High School, was erectedg this included the Old Bell recast from the previous building .... four classrooms and gymnasium auditorium added to this in 1918 and again in 1925, eight more class-rooms, before this, in 1923 a two-room Portable building at the rear, to take care of the overflow. i LOWVELLVILLE HIGH SCHOOL- 1918 On the South Side .... the first school .... near Lyman Stacy's farm .... later another on Jackson Street, near present building .... in 1888, new two-room school .... in 1932, modern four-room brick .... built during Depression -cost but 822,000 .... enrollment then 135, now 40 .... bell from old building likewise placed in the new building. 'l'he New North Side School building was first discussed seriously in the early forties and perhaps would have been constructed sooner had not the Second XVorld War intervened-then came post-war in- flation and it seemed that a new building was beyond realization: but the people wanted it and they now have it .... a school plant, as fine, it seems. as it is possible to build. Incidentlv, the Old Bell, once recast, again reposes on top of the new building, calling the students to school and quite often tolling out the news that another basketball game had been won. Quite proud we shoul.l be that back in 1875, the Sum of 860 was raised to provide -1 librarv for the school.
