Under his advisorship the deficit has been replaced by a surplus. In the meantime, the quality of our yearbook has improved and should continue to improve because of the freedom from debt, and because a dedicated and loyal yearbook organization has been created which fosters this improvement in keeping with a growing and improving Lowell Tech. Therefore, to Professor Edward M. Engel, our friend, adviser, and faithful co-worker, we are pleased to dedicate the 1964 Pickout. President ' s Message As the Class of 1964 this month proceeds from the rank of student to alumni membership in the Lowell Technological Institute, I am reminded of the extraordinary vicissitudes which marked its progress during the collegiate period. Within the four-year span of your college career have occurred national and international events of the greatest political, military, scientific, cultural, and social import. In your personal lives as well, I am sure, each of you already has been confronted by problems, crises, and perhaps even tragedy. Hopefully, however, as an educated person you have faced the uncertainties of the past four years— whether personal, national, or international— with courage and determination. This is as it should be, for in all probability the college graduate of the middle 60 ' s will be called upon to play a more important role in the future of his country and the world he finds than ever his fond parents had envisioned— and your college years should have been a good preparation for the role that you must play. It is my sincere hope that to your task you will bring all the best forces that are in you— that you may be a contributor to your profession, you r community, and your country, and with my heartiest congratulations to you now on your attainments to date go my best wishes that, in the future, success and happiness will crown your personal and professional lives. DELTA KAPPA PHI 60 Delta Kappa Phi Fraternity is a brotherhood which has a personality all its own. It is composed of a group of young men, engrossed in pride and loyalty, and of many races and religions, and surrounded with a congenial atmosphere. The current year got off to a fast start with the rememberable festivities of Hell Week. A tip of the hat from all the old members goes to our new brothers and the tremendous job that they did on the house along with the added spirit they have given the fraternity. One must recall the many times the Dekes would find escape from their studies by attending the many social gatherings which were held at our house at Fletcher Street. The Third Degree, IFC Weekend, Military Ball, Christmas Party, All-Tech Weekend, Yahmo Party, and the Fraternity Formal are among the affairs which will not soon be forgotten. As time goes on, we will recall the many quorum meetings under the leadership of Consul Conrad Zumhagen; for it was here that we discussed and decided the points of view we proudly displayed. We will always remember that our combined effort justified our success and accomplishments. We will never forget the friendly and needed consideration offered by a fellow brother. These pleasant memories that are so profound in our minds will be retained much of our lives as Those Happiest Years. Moreover, the ideals and spirit of the graduating brothers will remain in the future as the foundation of Delta Kappa Phi Fraternity. 61 t - ? rf C i 63 Omicron Pi Fraternity, the oldest fraternity at Lowell Tech, was founded in 1902 by seven members of the then Lowell Textile School with the purpose of promoting brotherhood among its members and forming a society of men with common ideals and interests. The only independent fraternity on campus, and backed by strong and loyal alumni, O Pi has chosen to remain independent through the years, even ■though it has been approached by several national fraternities. In doing so, we remain free to govern ourselves and are not burdened by the commitments or the expenses involved in an affiliation with a national organization. Soon another June will have rolled around, and another group of O Pi men will receive their degrees and enter the world of industry, but their time spent at O Pi will never be forgotten. Such pleasant memories as harmonizing with the choral group, killing time at work parties, finding just the right laboratory report in the file, and the many parties and big weekends will remain fond memories forever. This school year got off to a bang with Hell Week and much time was devoted to getting the O Pi Mansion into top shape. Members as well as pledges worked side by side repairing the house and beautifying the grounds. With all things combined, social, fraternal, academic, and athletic, the past year was one of the most enjoyable and profitable years for O Pi men. As the seniors look over their years of fraternity life, they can not help but be thankful for the experience gained while living in the brotherhood of O Pi; for here there were close friends, common interests, and pleasurable social functions. To the graduating seniors, Omicron Pi wishes the best of luck for the future, marked with happiness and success. 64 First Row: J. Guppy, J. Cyr, Historian; P. Hinckley, Marsliall; T. The ensuing year saw the inauguration of Gamma Chapter at Lowell Tech. Through the years Phi Psi men with their varying personalities have elevated Gamma Chapter to the prominence it now enjoys. These men leave Phi Psi rich in the feeling of brotherhood and memories of a full rich college life. The events of the past year were highlighted by the fraternity formal in the Spring. On that occasion many brothers received trophies in recognition of their contributions through the year. Hell Week officially installed 26 new brothers and their willing hands gave our house a face lifting. A new kitchen, game room, new ceilings and wall paneling were among some of the accomplishments. The pledge party was the first in a series of parties throughout first semester. 1964 was properly welcomed by the brotherhood in a quiet way. The wedding bells rang frequently in the past year, taking quite a toll on the brotherhood. However, their spirit and participation remained undaunted. Rome came to Phi Psi IFC weekend when the brothers garbed in togas, sandals, and laurel wreaths marched to Cumnock to pay tribute to their leader Ed Caesar Wokanowicz. Grapes were the main dish fed to the brothers by willing maidens. Christmas had a special meaning to the brothers when they hosted twenty-one children in the annual Christmas party. Our thanks to the unpadded Santa, Boofie. Ad Semper Perfectum, our motto, is the foremost aim and ideal in the minds of the Brotherhood of Phi Psi. The new year holds the promise that this spirit will continue to predominate. The brothers of Phi Psi wish to express their sincere thanks to all those persons whose assistance made possible a pleasurable and rewarding year. 69 , rf fV .| m m H 1 1? H m ' 1 i [ g 70 71 In 1949 Pi Lambda Phi appeared on the Lowell Tech campus as Massachusetts Alpha Epsilon Chapter of the Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity. Then, as now, Pi Lam is the only national fraternity on the campus. Today it ranks high in the national chapter roll. In its fifteenth year on the campus. Pi Lam, under the leadership of Rex Richard Shifman has continued to maintain its prominence and fulfill its duties and obligations to the school. Throughout the school. Pi Lam continues to stand out with an ever flourishing distinction. Members of Pi Lam in school activities include the Managing Editor and Advertising Editor of the Text; Co-Editor, Managing Editor, Business Manager, and Advertising Editor of the Pickout; four members of Who ' s Who; Secretary and Vice-President of the Student Council; and the Vice-President of IPC. As usual the social season was once again a tremendous success. Spearheaded by social chairman Earl Goldberg, four big weekends highlighted the activities. Who can ever forget the colorful Military Ball Weekend, with all its trimmings and bright lights and the amazed expressions on the faces of the freshmen who came to their first Pi Lam party; or All Tech Weekend, where young ladies and their escorts jumped to the jazz band Friday evening and participated in the glittering festivities of the following night and Sunday afternoon. These are the memories; the phone numbers; the attractive blonde; the day you found your furniture missing and nobody knew why. These are the thoughts that will linger on for many a Pi Lam man as he progresses forward and makes his way into that world which follows graduation. An event that has never failed to bring good cheer was the annual Christmas party held for the children of the Franco- American Orphanage. To see the faces of the children when they received their presents, watched cartoons, and ate candy and ice cream, made the brothers have pride in their fraternity. The new brothers who were initiated and formally inducted this year have more than shown us that they truly represent the same Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity that is perennially respected. 72 First Row: E. In 1948 the traditional Greek letters were substituted for the name. Then in 1955 the ideals of the sorority — knowledge, equality, conscience, achievement, and friendship — were put on the crest. The year starts with Hell Week, and is followed by the traditional Welcome Party. The girls get into the Christmas spirit by preparing favors for local nursing homes. This year a Newsletter was sent to Alumni to keep them informed of the latest sorority events. In September of 1962 the AFROTC department instituted a rifle drill team, which four months later became a unit of the national mihtary honor society, PERSHING RIFLES. Company A-12, Northeastern University, Pershing Rifles, acted as our sponsoring unit, and we were awarded the designation, Squadron N, 12th regiment, Pershing Rifles. The next morning Squadron N, less than twelve hours old, marched on the floor of Commonwealth Armory in Boston, to compete in the Pershing Rifle New England Championships. Squadron N took third place in New England at that meet and became the first team ever to receive a perfect score in the Regulation Drill portion of the Area A, ROTC Drill Meet. Our purpose is symbolized by our official crest: A Grecian helmet and torse, above a torch and crossed rifles, on a shield. The helmet symbolizes both the courage of the members and safety in the society. The torse, a six divisional rope, represents the romantic aspect of heraldry and symbolizes the service, representing the cooperative efforts of the society. The proper utiUzation of military power, represented by the rifles, demands a high degree of intelligence combined with a strong sense of obhgation to, and love for, this country. It is toward this proper utilization of military power that the training of Pershing Rifles is devoted. The flaming torch signifies indomitable leadership and the eternal friendship inherent within the society. General Pershing ' s words bind us, Service to the corps and honor to the individual. 118 •■■vV « ' ' :, ' - o Sports BASKETBALL ; First Row: D. Healy, Manager; J. Oliver, Coach; J. Rabeni, L. The Lowell Tech Swimming Club, organized in 1960, has in its brief existence succeeded in becoming very popular among those on campus interested in physical fitness. The thirty members learn under the coaching of advisor Mr. Bemie Shapiro the varied swimming and racing techniques, while at the same time having the opportunity to swim for fun. Recent appropriations have allowed the club to obtain the necessary equipment for organized water polo games which have proven a huge success. Open to all male Tech students, the club has enjoyed a very successful year and under the guidance of our coach it promises to grow rapidly. 122 TENNIS ■tmsammgtmm BtmmKsiea- ' A. mm ?i! « iir r ir]apr i ' . The tennis team, like any other athletic organization, offers an opportunity to the student to maintain physical fitness. The game is almost unique with respect to the cordiality and good sportsmanship that most tennis players display, and which accompany all matches, whether these be at school or in a tournament. The team spirit and will to win, however, are no less intense than in other more vigorous, contact types of sports. The tennis team this year, although lacking somewhat in experience, looks forward to a successful season. The majority of the members are sophomores and juniors who have played only one previous season, but have displayed the ability to contribute to the team ' s success. Dave Beeler, Jack Gregory, Joe Day, and Byron Samson will be competing for their second year; Warren DeMont is a returning senior who has played on one earlier team and should add strength to this year ' s squad; Dave Brezynski, a freshman, will be playing for the first time; Barry Flieder and Dave Howard are two seniors who are completing their collegiate athletic careers. The team will once again be coached by Jim Oliver and managed by John McGowan. 123 ALPINE CLUB First Row: R. Moran, E. Nove, J. Dorsey, Treasurer; R. Twigg, Vice-president; K. Morley, President; R. Only three of last year ' s lettermen are returning for action this season : Captain Wally McHendry, Shortstop Jim Seery, and Outfielder Butch Duguay. Since the Pickout goes to press long before even the first warm-up pitches are thrown, it is impossible to list any results of this year ' s games. The manager will be W. It doesn ' t seem possible that almost four years have gone by since our first day at Tech. Unfortunately, Hurricane Donna decided to join us and completely messed up our first day and caused a hurried reshuffUng of the rest of the week, but we somehow managed to fit everything in. Then, with our beanies at a jaunty angle, we started our scholastic career. Of course we didn ' t spend all of our time studying. This was the year of the ' Great Debate ' and some study time was spent Ustening to, and a lot more arguing about, the presidential candidates. After six weeks orientation period was over we had the traditional banquet. It wasn ' t until later, at the first of the Dean ' s little talks that we found out that someone had kicked several large holes in the wall as we waited to march into Cumnock Hall. We also found out that we were going to pay to have the whole section redone — in mahogany. With this low blow to the pocketbook the class of ' 64 was in no shape to hold social functions. Luckily it was election year, and the campaign excitment kept our minds from our low treasury. Then, on November 9, John F. Kennedy, an honorary LTI alumnus, was elected President. We really hit the books after our midterm reports, but somehow by Christmas vacation we had gotten back into our comfortable ruts. We had a lot of fun that vacation, and not much studying got done; but luck (and about two weeks of No Doze) was on our side and we managed to pass all (well, almost all) of our first semester exams. With the second semester came more construction trouble as the hbrary ceiling was condemned. This time it wasn ' t our fault, but we suffered for it when the main reading room was closed. (Sears and Zemansky is bad enough, but in a bedroom crowded with roommates it becomes impossible. ) We survived somehow, however, and on May 5th we all crowded around any available radio to cheer Alan Shepard into space. Five days later we really celebrated on Upstream Day. After the day was over the guys at the dorms continued their celebrating with a water fight. (It was a complete accident that that cop got hit. He didn ' t have to call in the riot squad.) Finals crept up on us and suddenly we had the whole summer to ourselves. SENIORS First Row: S. Pearce, Vice-president; N. Lavigne, President: J. Ainsworth, Advisor. Second Row: R. Cook, Representative; R. Hazard, Treasurer; W. Tranmer, Secretary. 143 With September came registration, and after doing our share to ' educate ' the Freshmen, we really hit the books. Our good intentions were renewed every Monday morning, but by Wednesday afternoon they had faded somewhat as we counted the hours until Friday night. On November 11 we spent a really ' different ' Veteran ' s Day — we all came to school. It was Alumni Reunion weekend, and as we stood around providing local color we managed to meet quite a few distinguished LTI grads. At All Tech Weekend something new was tried — -snow sculpture. Luckily the weather cooperated, and DK won with a sad dog titled ' Frustration ' . In February John Glenn orbited the earth; April brought the first of the lectures in a series inaugurated in memory of Prof. Jacob K. Frederic; and May again brought Upstream Day when we had an extra good time due to the bus load of touring Mexican students. We somehow got through finals again, the summer flew by, and again we were back in school. 144 p ai . FAN: This year we had the Cuban crisis, and Pres. Lydon called a special convocation to urge us to stay in school. Most of us took his advice, but it seemed like the professors hadn ' t heard him. The new Health Room was a big help in getting us to ' relax ' and forget our troubles. December brought the Military Ball and Christmas vacation; January brought exam jitters. Those of us that survived were surprised to see how fast the semester flew by and almost before we knew it we were through for the summer. 145 146 It was September again and this time we were Seniors. Because this was our last year everything seemed just a bit more important than before. We really tried this year, but towards the middle of November we found ourselves counting the days until Thanksgiving vacation. Then, on a Friday afternoon, November 22, we stopped planning vacation fun while we mourned with the whole country — President John F. Kennedy was dead by assassination. A month of mourning was decreed during which time nobody felt particularly festive, even though Christmas was almost upon us. But time marches on and gradually Tech returned to normal. Second semester was a little more festive than usual since the Military Ball and All Tech Weekend were within a month of each other. DK again won the snow sculpturing contest with their entry titled ' Integration ' . A concert by the Chad Mitchell Trio climaxed a most enjoyable weekend. The time rushed by with outings, dinners and other social gatherings, well mixed with labs, term papers and exams. Now as the day approaches for us to leave after four years at Tech, we can be proud of our accomplishments and of our grandest boast — • I ' m LTI, ' 64. 147 SENIOR ACTIVITIES MIGUEL ABITI, JR. 5 Norte 203, Puebla, Pue. Castrollte (kas tr o . lit e) A highly sulphonated castor oil made by an improved process of manufacture. A stable penetrant for dyeing or kier boiling. Used ex- tensively in finishing. DIscolite (dls ko .lite) Concentrated sodium sulphoxylate formaldehyde available in lump, pea, rice or powder form. A powerful reducing agent, stable at high tem- peratures. Widely used to effect reduction and solution of vat colors, and for discharge effects when applied to colored grounds. Effective when mixed with vat colors and discharge pastes wherever the reducing agent must retain its reducing power after being dried into the fabric. Dlspersall (dls-pur sal) A long chain ethylene oxide condensate in the form of a colorless, neutral, somewhat viscous liquid. Fully resistant to hard water, and miscible with water in all proportions. A retardant and leveling assistant in vat dyeing. Used widely as a dispersing agent in dyeing synthetic fibers with disperse colors and for fast color salts and bases in Napthol dyeing and printing. Effective in stripping to prevent redeposition of the color on stripped goods. N Neowet ( n eA o . wet) Complex Polyethelene Ether in the form of a pale yellow, slightly viscous liquid. A non- ionic surface active wetting agent, effective at all temperatures. Completely compatible with enzymatic desizing agents and readily soluble in water. Contains 33 l % active ingredients. Widely used in scouring all types of textile fabrics and for general wetting purposes. Neowet X ( n e o . w e t ) Organic Ether Sulphonate in the form of a water white slightly viscous liquid. An anionic surface active wetting agent, effective at all temperatures. Does not affect enzyme activity in desizing. Compatible with hydrogen peroxide and resin finishes. High detergent value. Contains 20% active ingredients. Neozymes ( n e o . zTm s ) Desizing agents made up of amylolytic. proteolytic and fat splitting enzymes available in the form of crystalline powder or liquid concentrate for high or low temperature requirements. Neozymes quickly remove all trace of starch glue or gelatin sizing without danger of damage to even the most delicate fabrics. For best results, use with NEOWET to speed saturation. Parolite ( p a r o .lite) Zinc sulphoxylate formaldehyde in the form of white crystalline powder. A highly concentrated stripping agent for all forms of wool and modem synthetics. Completely soluble in water. Leaves stripped goods soft, completely free of zinc dust and in most receptive condition for further processing. Often completely strips goods where other strip- ping agents fail. Very effective in discharge print- ing on acetate rayon. Vatrollte (vafiro.Iite) Concentrated sodium hydrosulphite in the form of white crystalline powder. A powerful reducing agent for vat colors, ideal for dry feeding because of its free flowing, dustless character. Completely soluble in water. Effective stripping agent for direct, sulphur and vat colors on cellulosic fabrics. Quickly removes rust stains from cotton goods. May be stored indefinitely. Available with optical whites and in buffered formulas for high temperature use without excessive alkalinity. Velvoray (vel- vo . ray) A high grade finishing oil made up of sulphonated vegetable oil combined with specially selected fats. Compatible with all materials commonly used for finishing textiles. Will not foam, smoke or oxidize. Imparts no rancid odor. Gives body and has emulsion stability. Widely used to add a silky softness to all types of fabrics. Velvo Softener ( v e l v o ) A highly sulphonated tallow in the form of a creamy white paste, easily dispersed in water. Used in general finishing of all types of textile fabrics. Will not smoke off or change color in high temperature operations such as calendering or drying. Has no effect on light fastness of colors. ouce CHEMICAL CARLTON HILL lc ' COMPANY NEW JERSEY Hamilton, Charles D. 270 E. Main St. No. Adams Harris, Warren A. Ill Russell Farm Rd.
