PEP RALLIE he annual fall outdoor pep rally was held in September to recognize and encourage all the participants in fall sports. It was held in Lucy Larcom Park. The band and cheerleaders were present to drum up school spirit. Senior class president Tina Coulouraaas and Head Loud- mouth Andrea Mitchell emceed the event. Each varsity team was called up to the concert platform. The coaches or captains introduced all the athletes by name and then asked the crowd for their support. Sounds of music and enthusisatic cheers filled the air. Our next rally was staged in the field house prior to the traditional Thanks- giving Lowell!Lawrence football game. Confetti and pom poms were in abundance. Coach Nelson presented each member of his squad and the cheerleaders performed in inimitable fashion to a standing room only crowd. h March saw a rally, held to psych up the student body on behalf of the boys'basketball team. The Raiders were to meet Durfee High School at Boston Garden in the semi-final game of the Division I State Tourney. As LHS fans eagerly cheered the players on, Coach Ryan led them in the sing- ing ofthe school's fight song, while the cheerleaders presented their award winning dance routine. 14 X OPENING gm 1' 1 N n ' - N Q 2'uk.'O,l lx if I l W Q ,Q Kr 0 I' .5 I 0' Q ,-., Q 9 c 1 0 Q .,' , . - ww ' ,sn ' .. iff :ef .1 7' V ,J gamut 6 A v5 'V ' 4125 ,.' .IF rs, ls . The pre-game tradition of introducing the senior football players was held to acknowledge the support which parents give to the team during the season, each and every year. At halftime, Homecoming Queen, Lisa Marcotte, was crowned by last year's Queen, Jennifer Desmond. Mrs. Donna Leahey, president of the Friends of Lowell High School, pres- ented trophies to the Court, consist- ing of Junior Marybeth Sullivan, Sophomore Elizabeth Sheeh and Freshman Debbie Lamarre. This is it, This is our Time Time for us to move on This is it, This is our time A time for us to stand strong In our lives ahead, we may find some hard times When it seems like there's nothing we can do Time for us to move on This is it, This is our time A time for us to stand strong In our lives ahead, we may find some hard times When it seems like there's nothing we can do But together I think we can make it If we all help each other pull through This is it, this is our time Our day for laughter in the sun This is it, this is our time To look back on all the things we have done As we say good bye to the school we've called our own Let's take the time to realize That we've come a long way just to get here So now let's show the pride that's in our eyes. This is it, this is our time Take each other by the hand, This is it, this is our time. Let's go out there and show 'em that we can. Words and music by Thomas Fetters. Three faculty members died --- three men who had served the students of Lowell High with caring and dedication --- Arthur O'Neill, William Notini and Barry Cronin. Each one had his area of expertise. Each one had his unique impact on the students with whom he worked. Those we hold most dear never truly leave us They live on in the kindnesses they showed, the comfort they shared, and the good they brought into our lives. ---Isabel Norton. So too, we hope, .did seven faculty members who left Lowell High School with us. Their combined years of service totaled 201. They taught in various dis- ciplines and worked in various positions. We hope that they will remember us with affection, because that is how we will remember them. RAIDERS RETURN TO GRIDIRON 6 6 RUSTRATING7 This one word describes the 1987 Football season. Exploding onto the field at the be- ginning of the season, Coach Nelson's squad held Haverhill to a scoreless tie, defeated Central Catholic and beat Tewksbury on their home field - an accomplishment with no precedent. They were even picked by some to defend their MVC Championshipg but from this point on, it was all downhill. Maj or losses to Dracut and Billerica broke the momentum. Quarter- back Bill Rizos was injured, forcing the team to shift gears in the middle of the season. The next two losses to Chelmsford and Andover were hardly morale boosters. The dispirited Raiders managed to salvage this frustrating sea- son at Cawley Stadium with a spectacular come from behind at the last second Thanksgiving victory over Lawrence 7-6. Even though it was not a red-letter season, the memory of this win guaranteed happy memories for everyone. Captain Eric Nelson was a Boston Herald All-Scholastic All Star and along with Tom Lafferty, a Lowell Sun All Star. The Raiders had a veteran squad of solid players who supposedly did not have too much flash. They looked terrific in the pre-season Hol- iday Tournament but by mid-season they were in a slump. After losing four close games to Wilmington, Billerica, Chelmsford and Central, their chance of qualifying for the States looked slim. In a final burst of determination, the team rallied to Win their final ten games, closed the season with a ten point win over arch rival, Central Catholic and qualified for the States. This winning momentum was carried into the State Tournament and LHS reached the finals of the Division I North Championship against Lexington. This marked the fourth time in the last five years that the Raiders had done so. Lowell played a fantastic game and beat Lexington to win the Division I North Championship. This meant that the Eastern Mass tourney was ahead of them. The games were being played back at Boston Garden after a hiatus of sixteen years. Durfee High was to be the opponent on the famous parquet floor of the Garden. A super pep rally was held on the day of the game before the close of school. Later, over 8,000 fans watched the game. It was a tough, frustrating contest --- tied with 3 minutes to go. Durfee hit 16 of 21 free throws during the fourth quarter to Win the game. ..i I 8' 1 S S SS XR J A ' A 1 Ai, lv rffj 5,1 :.. is L 2 14 f f I U V ., ,S 1 ' ,gy ,V vga, KXVV J' V ,V-,v qr. BOYS SWIMMING! 111 CHEERLEADERS aking a first in cheer at the Mass. State Division III com- petition, sponsored by the New England Cheerleading Coaches' Association, was just the beginning of the LHS cheerleaders' outstanding season. The girls part- icipated in four competitions over the year and took a lst place in each one. At the Holiday Tournament, they were awarded a lst place trophy for best cheerleading squad for the sixth straight time. Next, fol- lowed a trip to Chicopee for the regi- onal competition, sponsored by the Eastern Cheer Coaches' Associa- tion. Lowell lost the cheer contest by two points to a coed team from New York on the first day of the tourney. Right after this setback, the girls headed back home to root on the basketball team which was battling its way against Melrose into the quarter finals of the States. The cheerleaders then returned to Chicopee, totally exhausted, to pre- sent their routine for day two of their own tournament. Their classy dance routine dazzled the judges and LHS took first place with their dance routine. Special awards were given to individuals. Deana Des- marais received a gold medal for an outstanding performance and dedi- cation to the team in cheer, While Renia Bacon took a gold medal for her excellence in dance. Shannon Moore was selected as an All-Star cheerleader. In the All-Star Division event, teams from Divisions I, II and III vied against one another. Lowell placed 3rd in this competition, def- eating the coed team which had beaten them in cheer, only the day before. The last challenge ofthe year came in Springfield at a contest sponsored by the New England Cheerleaders' Association. This was an All-New England Open competi- tion consisting of 13 teams for both cheer and dance. The girls took 3rd place in cheer and lst place in dance. What a year!! Student Council Pre- sident Kelley McCabe rallied in the face of adversity as tragedy struck student government faculty advisor advisor Helen Droney. The council went without an advisor for the remaining eight months of the school year. Kelley initially shouldered most of the respon- sibility, until other officers and faculty members helped with various endeavors. Everyone however, did more than his or her part and things came together quite smoothly. Most of the traditional student government activities were maintained this year - dances, candy cane and flower sales, movie nights, fall and spring blood drives, teacher appreciation dinner and the spring weekend. Enough money was made at these events to support the group's charitable ventures.Money was col- lected in the homerooms at Christmas time for the Toys for Tots project. Four carloads of toys were brought to St. Patrick's Church for distribution to needy children. A six hundred dollar donation was made to the Lowell House of Hope for battered and abused women and the Alternative House.Continuing this string of good deeds, 31,000 in scholarships was awarded to students for the first time. At the end of the school year, the council united the en- tire student body to collect the 551,000 prize and to hear the June 14th concert with Richard Marx. This brought about a tremedous ending to a terrific year. Officers: President - Kelley McCabe Vice Presiden - Stephanie Creegan Treasurer - Kellie Fleming Secretary - Kerry Ahern 128 ! Modestly speaking, some ofthe best parties are hosted by this group. They present a gala Christmas Dinner featuring holiday food specialties from many lands, as well as traditional and inter- national music and games. The breaking of the pinata highlights the evening. Chapter presentations are made on a regular basis, at which times each chapter's langu- age is highlighted by a film, a lecture on customs or the country itself, and by ethnic refreshments. During In- ternational Language Club Week, members and their parents prepared a gourmet international dinner. Many of those attending wore costumes from foreign lands and danced to the music of those countries. Prizes were awarded for the best outfits. During this same week, the club actively participated in the Hands Across the City evening which was a well attended cultural and so- cial sucess. The group of fourteen girls kept themselves very busy by participating in everything from school functions to civic events. The annual Harvest Dance was its usual success. At Halloween the officers sponsered A Treat For Your Sweet fund raiser. For 31.00 a bag of sweets was delivered to a friend or someone special during home room period, to keep everyone in a Trick or Treat mood! From fall through spring, officers could be seen at many functions within the community. They were ushers at the Lowell Sun Spelling Bee, the Gol- den Gloves boxing matches, the Air Force Band concert, the Tour De Lowell bike race,,the Multi-cultural Experience, Freshman Orientation, and the Lowell High School Open House. Added to the list of duties for the girls this year, was a new Volunteer Ser- vice Program. Any officer who had an extra study hall and wished to assist where help was needed, worked in the House Offices, the Guidance Depart- ment, the N urses' Office, or on the switchboards. This program, initiated by Ms. Ritchotte, was of benefit to the entire school. Front Cl. to r.J: Advisor Michelle Ritchotte, Major Rayann Drouin, Major Leslie Wallace, Lt.
