The prize for being first was 55004 in cash to the winning school and a rock concert to be performed by a band called 'til tuesday. Rules for the concert were as follows: The words WBCN 'til tuesday Lowell High School had to be written on 3x5 index cards. The school which submitted the most cards would be declared the winner. Todd Keefe initiated the project by announ- cing the contest to the student council. Under the direction of Mrs. Droney the contest began at Lowell High around October 26, 1985. Upon entering the contest, it was thought that only about 20,000 cards would be needed for Lowell to win. As the craze grew, that prediction became minimal. HaU'way through the contest, the supply of index cards in the state of Massachusetts had been exhausted, forcing WBCN to change its rules .... paper cut to 3x5 size could be used. This marked the point when custodians started complaining about the paper blizzard which covered the floors of every corridor and room of our school. It was worth it, however. The week of Nov. 11, 1985 was one , . 1 rl -gt 1 -. VD' N Q' 1 1'?WzQ H 'YA to be remembered. The school gathered its forces,' teachers, students, and even parents united to prove that Lowell High School's spirit was the best. The long hours, writer's cramps, and hard work paid ojfflf On Nov. 21, 1985 over students met in the teacher's lounge to jind out U' Lowell had won. All held their breaths in anticipation as WBCN read of the countdown. After hearing that Marshfield High had taken second place out ofa total of 35 schools, Lowell High knew that they had won. Lowell, now the state's if 1 in School Spirit. We rejoiced by singing We Are The Champions . On Dec. 3, 1985 la tuesday of coursej over 2,000 teenagers streamed into Lowell Memorial Auditorium to watch as Headmaster Peter Stamas received a check for 85004 and to see 'til tuesday present a personal concert for them. School spirit could be felt everywhere. Our school was victorious and they showed their happiness and pride to everyone-including 'til tuesday. It was the first game held since 1980. The senior girls defeated the junior girls by a score of 24-14. With the awesome coaching staff of Scott Basset, Bob Dyer, Kevin Dunn, and trainer Don Perigny, victory was but all assured. Marybeth McKenney, who received the game ball, ran wild across Shedd Park, scoring 3 touchdowns along the way. Keri Regan picked up the remaining 6 points for the winners. It was a rough game full of bumps, cuts and bruises. The only real injury was Maria Picanso's sprained ankle. There were some conflicts apart from the game as which Gianoulis sister was tougher---Gail or Donna, the junior MVP. John Tighe, Paul Haley, TJ McCarthy and John Broderick served as the junior coaching staff. Before the game it was decided that the winning team would get to paint their names on The Rock , The seniors, ever so gracious in victory, allowed the juniors to paint their names on it as well. It was a great ending to an exciting day for both classes. E vents! 7 ,E an O Q i-.fr-, f.,- f 4.43 Bibi-Q 6 . . A . YH ' x Q K v 7 .Q-' ' -. Once you arrived in Room 108, you discovered that not only did they want your blood, but they made you waitin line to give it. Students fainting really added to the drama. As you stood playing Twenty Questions with the nurses, you were pricked in the finger by them and be- came more anxious as time passed. All in all, you might ask if the whole thing was worth it? Considering that one got out of at least one class, received some light refreshments and that the giving of blood was not even painful, to say noth- ing of the good cause involved, the answer is plain to see. f-if . , ,.. 2' i s m - 10!Events .SY linux 2. fl Teacher Appreciation Night ,1- This year's Appreciation Dinner, hosted by the students in honor of the faculty, took place on November 25th. With the help of Cafeteria Director Pat Archambault, the committe of students produced an outstanding spaghetti supper. Faculty members enjoyed a delicious meal, served by their students, while listening to the festive band. The dinner enabled the student workers to give something special back to the faculty, who have supported and helped the students throughout their years at LHS. The time spent in the preparation and serving of the food, and even the cleaning up afterward, proved most enjoyable for everyone in- volved. Events! 1 I sil,.,.i,. She had a real talent for finding alternative solutions to sticky scheduling or course selection problems. For 18 years, she served both students and the school admirably. 66 The Lowell High School community was saddened thisi year by the deaths of two of its? members - Guidance Counselor Mary E. Stroumbos' and Senior Class Membel Chulathy Long. Both exhibitec courage in the face of illness and both were devoted to LHS May their souls rest in peace. o l Tl l . w ll l 4 l A l , , fl 'a -l ll 4 l 'Natures first green is gold, WOTHING GOLD CAN STAY Her hardest hue to hold, Her early leafs a flower: QQ' 1 h . 1' l T u But on y so an our ES X ww Then leaf subsides to leaf. His preferred subject was Accounting. From 1945 to l968, he also served as the 70 baseball coach. Over the years, his teams, as members of the Greater Boston and Essex County Leagues, won 3 League Championships and participated in 5 State Tourna- ments. Sixteen of his LHS players signed professional baseball contracts. His overall coaching record was 286 wins, 171 losses, and 3 ties. As a result of this impressive show- ing, he was voted into Massachusetts State For the final nineteen years of his time at Lowell High, Mr Stoklosa was Master of the school, completing a 44 year career, as teacher, coach and administrator. The club organized a tutor- ing program which helped many students to im- prove their science grades. The organization, which has a membership of 130 was very involved in sponsoring the Science Fair. Each year a club member represents LHS at the State Science Fair conducted at MIT. Other activities included the Daffodil Sale for the American Cancer Society and the presentation of programs featuring speakers from scientilic or engineering companies, who dis- cussed the state of the art in various technologies.
