You get off the Marinel yel- low bus - half dead with one eye open - and trudge toward the new building. Who can function properly at the ungodly hour of 7:25, you wonder, wishing desperately thatgyou had an extra hour of sleep in the Life. .. morning. Whose idea was it to change the time, anyway? As you struggle to open the door, you realize that you have a big decision to make: Palmer's or Maxwell House. Because you don't have much time, you decide to grab a greasy doughnut in the smartly decorated caf. You keep an eye constantly on the clock because you don't want to be late: 5 tar- dies : 1 absence and 5 ab- sences : 1 demerit. The se- nior class motto has be- come: Save Your Skips - late May and early June af- ford great beach-going weather. As you go up to your locker, you have to dodge Mr. Georgoulis who is careening down the hall on his 10- speed Raleigh. Thus another uneventful day at LHS begins. Q 51: I' 15 'ti V1 The class of 1977 dedicates this book to Thomas F. Murphy This year has been a most productive learning experience for all of us. ' You now possess the basic skills, the tools to really take that step into the world of adults -the true meaning of graduation. What does it promise you - everything! Living, love, success in all your undertakings, all the ingredients of a fulfilled life. lf only you remember the ideals that have been inculcated in each of you this past year, especially: - Love one another, respect for each other regardless of the foibles and idiosyncrasies which are imbedded to some degree in all of us. The great dignity that each of you .-.N has - the proud interdependencega spirit that will never be mitigated: - . This is how l view the class of 1977. In my remaining days you will always be an 1 integral part of me. l shall look for and f savor your successes for l know they will be many. i . l have learned much from you - for this I am deeply grateful. And so it is that Thomas F. Murphy, Senior Flogrrnasterof Lowell High School, retired this year after a thirty-two year career in the Lowell Public School System. With his magnetic personality, his rare sense of humorous expression and his wisdom, gained through wide experience, Mr., Murphy won the respect and admiration of every graduating student. He gave help and comfort tothe- ones who needed it and was a friend to those who were alone. He touched each and every one of us in a very special way. , Our class of 1977, Mr. Murphy's eighteenth as Senior Floormaster, has already graduated. Together, both Mr. Murphy and we are embarking on our own new adventures. For all of us, each today will be our own personal graduation . . . our private mark in time between the past and the future . . . our own farewell to yesterday, our welcome. to tomorrow. Yet, before we disperse, each striving for separate goals, attempting to realize different dreams and ambitions, it is only fitting that we, as Mr. Murphy's last graduating class, should join his friends and colleagues in wishing him a happy and joyous retirement. Unlike old soldiers who retire and fade away, one man who will forever live in the hearts of those at Lowell High School is Thomas F. Murphy. t 2 , 'Q I' . .r 43 5 . . You have just completed that part of your life in which outside direction and guidance from your parents, from your teachers, or from others were dominant factors. Some of you resented itg others leaned on it heavily like a crutchg but most of you have matured under it and have already made a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. Some of you have already experienced your moment of gloryg but moments oj glory are just that, moments. The same can be said of disappointments. The test now is the ability to come down off that pedestal or up off the floor to meet the challenges of life, the bigger game. Charles Peverill had been an English teacher at the high school for five and one-half years. During this time, Mr. Peverill brought knowledge, dedication and excitement to his teaching. He did so despite ill health during his last two years. Charles Peverill, who was a graduate of Lowell High School, Class of 1963, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lowell State College and his Master of Arts from Salem State College. He was also involved with the theater groups of those institutions and had written original plays for the stage. A veteran of the Armed Forces, he served with distinction in the Vietnam conflict. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Peverill. His death causes a rage within us against the loss of this vibrant, witty, intelligent, often controversial and never dull personality. We shall not see the like of Charles Peverill again, but the memory of the man will long remain in the minds and hearts of those who knew him. January 31, 1977 Lowell High School was saddened by the retirement of its hard working and efficient chairman of the Mathematics Department, Mr. Victor Luz. Mr. Luz's early retirement was precipitated by ill health. He had been chairman of the Math Department for twelve and one-half years and had previously taught Marie Sweeney's resignation has left the High School without its chief cheerleader. She tirelessly planned parties for the Faculty Club, brought order out of chaos at the Student-Faculty shows, encouraged multitudes of 112 Victor Luz mathematics at Lowell High since his election in 1958. Under his tutelage, the Math Department became one of the most efficient and innovative departments at Lowell High School. Victor Luz's absence leaves a void that may never be completely filled. He will be missed by his friends, the faculty, staff, and students of Lowell High School. Marie P. Sweeney applications for the Lowell Historical Society contest, conducted walking tours of downtown Lowell to inspire students with the love she had for her city. We miss her. 'X ,it 3 . sg L. Wyman Trull Since 1939 when he was elected to the faculty, Mr. Wyman Trull has been part of the backbone of our school. After graduating from Lowell High School, Mr. Trull entered Bowdoin College where he majored in history. On taking his degree, he returned to Lowell High where he soon became one of the strengths of the History Department as well as a valued member of the Latin Department. Mr. Trull has been more than a teacher - he has been a friend, a confidant, and a counselor to many of the young men and women John Lenihan A quiet, unassuming man, John Lenihan directed his talents in the area of reading. Elected to the system in 1951, he taught at the Daley School and worked in two Title lll Programs for the City of Lowell Schools. John Lenihan was Anne M. Gallagher ' A dedicated teacher who has given many years of service to Lowell High School, Anne Gallagher is a woman who cares about her students and her school. A graduate of Immaculate Conception High School and Boston University, she was elected to the Lowell who were his students. His encouragement and interest have sent many on to college, especially to Bowdoin. It was in recognition of his loyalty and hard work for his Alma Mater that he was presented the Bowdoin Distinguished Educator award in 1974. We've been fortunate to have had him at Lowell High. His devotion to duty, his interest in his classes, his sense of humor are all part of what gives vitality to our school. His 55 year service spanned three Head Masters, approximately 40,000 graduates, and hundreds of teachers. He is recalled as an accomodating person, jovial by nature, and totally dedicated in promoting Hugh Barnes Mr. Hugh Barnes met an untimely and unfortunate death, last fall, inthe performance of his duties. He replaced Mr. Walter S. Mclnerney as senior custodian on July 1, 1976. Although with us but a few months, he was in the process of reorganizing and reassigning personnel toward a more efficient and effective maintenance of Lowell High School. His death certainly was premature and unexpected. Mr. Barnes was a graduate of Lowell High School and an exceptional athlete in his pride in and loyalty toward Lowell High School. He was especially gifted as raconteur of stories, past history, events and personalities connected with the school over the years. To have known Mr. Mclnerney was a rewarding experience. To remember him, a privilege. day - baseball being his specialty. He had a warm personality, a perpetual smile, and the ability to direct his staff with dignity. After a long tenure in the same position at the Edith Nourse Rogers School, he came to us completely dedicated toward a purpose. Unfortunately, his objectives were never personally realized. But he did attempt to set high standards of work performance. During his very short stay here, he impressed all with his cooperation and concern. . 115 jp., ,A 1 gf '29, ,hr 4 if: Zh ' Q' f?v1h'aw'Ha i 15. Tryouts were held at the end of the school year but the future of Girl Officers was uncertain to say the least. The Girl Officers Program is in direct violation with anti-discrimination State Law 622. When the Girl Officer Alumnae were informed of this problem they were presented with several alternatives: open the program to boys, make it an afterschool activity, or seek the passage of a bill th rough the State Legislature that would specifically allow for the continuance of Girl Officers as an all girl program. The selection of 72 Girl Officers from a field of 120 candidates last June highlighted for many young ladies years of practice and anticipation. Traditionally, Girl Officers teach gym exercises to underclassmen, represent Lowell High School at various civic functions, and help to develop future Girl Officers. During their junior year, boys and girls compete for ranks in both written and physical exams. The Generalcy, a competition for promotion within the ranks, is conducted at the beginning of the senior year. This year, Carol Campbell attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, making her the first female officer in the Brigade's ninety-seven year history. Under the guidance of faculty director Colonel John Beaulieu and Lieutenant Philip Dancause, Brigadier General James Gaffney and Colonel Brian Scott have led the Brigade to the completion of its final year.
