When tyrant feet are trampling Upon the common weal, We must never cringe or writhe ’Neath the iron heel. Oh, the weak ones must be stronger And the strong ones must be just, Classmates of fifty-one, Defend our land we must, No matter what our mission Flying planes or tilling sod ’Twill be better if we do it For the greater glory of God. Tv LITERARY BOARD Barbara Elizabeth Ann Raymond Kosik Purtell Sullivan True Here, at last, is the finished product — the 19 51 edition of the Spindle. It is the finale of all school publications and a treasure chest of school souvenirs. It has been in preparation since September and many hours of work have been put into its completion. The members of the Newswriting class, the Spindle, Miss Ryan, Miss Lowney and her staff ' have not labored in vain, for they have produced an erudite publication filled with scholarly and scintillating writings. On the follow- ing pages you will find a class prophecy which will afford many smiles, a class history and pictures of your teachers and friends which will freshen the m emories which the years may erase. All this could not have been accomplished without your co-operation. This Spindle is completely yours. To you, it is the finest yearbook ever published. Now, turn the pages and find out why. EDITORIAL BOARD Barbara Lois David Gerard Cynthia Callahan Kanter Katzman Morin Neyman 7 ADMINISTRATION Raymond A. Sullivan — Headmaster Each year as we graduate a senior class, we send the young people torth with mingled emotions of regret and hope; regret that we are separating, and hope that the graduates will happily adjust to their changing environment. . As we have tried to develop school spirit, academic expansion, and student morale, we have watched an encouraging expansion of fine attitudes which flow from a sum of satisfying experiences. The continued influence of these forces in the training of the class of 1951 will aid, we trust, in channeling the enthusiastic vital spirit of its members into the develop- ment of fundamental strata of useful character and accomplishment in the atomic world. 10 George C. Character, scholarship, leadership and service are the four cardinal principles of the National Honor Society which are upheld by all its members. Membership in this Society, whose emblem is the Flaming Torch, is one of the most honored positions a student at Lowell High may hold. Election to the Society is based on certain qualifications. Those Juniors with a grade of at least 90%, within the highest 5 % of the Junior class and those Seniors with a grade of at least 8 5%, within 15% of the Senior class are eligible for mem- bership. Organized in 1927 under the sponsorship of Miss Helen Choate, the National Honor Society is maintaining its high rating under the capable direction of Mr. Charles Foley. 92 Front: Ray Riddick, head coach; Ted Kemos, Freddie Santos, Len Andrusaitis, Chris Routsis, Phil Shannon, Bob Trouville, Bob Lambert, Jim Mayo, Fritz Drescher, trainer; Al Mangan, freshman coach. 2nd row: John McCarthy, Ray Liston, Phil Reilly, Don Jelly, captain; Jerry Cough- lin, Bob Lekites, Jack McGuane, Bob Walsh, Mike Kopacz, and Jack Sloan. 3 rd row: Frank Linscott, manager; Dave Merrill, Hank Garrity, Ray Linscott, Lenny Gravelle, Jack Burgoyne, Roy Vernette, Leo Dalphond, John Janas, and Clem Morin. Boulger Instructor Twenty-one years ago in the fall of 193 5, thirty girls and one leader were chosen and trained by Mr. Wilfrid T. Boulger to perform at the annual Thanksgiving foot- ball game. Since that time the number has increased to fifty girls and ten leaders. They have appeared at every football game and have taken part in Field Day and Memorial Day parades ever since. They have also performed for charitable groups and the school shows. In the year 1942, in order to encourage pupils to develop their twirling abilities, there was a championship contest. Mr. Boulger awarded gold and silver medals to the winners. Every subsequent year medals have been presented to the winners of the Class A, for leaders, and Class B, for girls eligible for future leadership. In the rookie contest, girls in the first year of twirling compete. The first and second prize winners of these contests receive a gold and silver medal, respectively, and bronze medals are awarded to all the other girls participating. Twirling and drilling are year-round jobs, because as soon as the football season is over the girls begin to practice for Music Festivals, Shows, and Field Day. 101 Colonel Charles Chiklis Lieutenant Colonels Philip Reilly Denis King John Maloney Louie Demetroulakas Fred Gallagher Majors John Janas Donald Conroy Donald Davies Wm. Under the supervision of Miss Bawita Lawler, the girls learn the fine points of marching, dancing, posture, voice and mass drill, and are justifiably proud to wear the navy blue uniform with brass buttons and gold chevrons. The Girl Officers’ Ball in January was the highlight of the winter months, and the Hallowe’en party in October was also a success. The girls are also willing to aid a worthy cause. This year they helped in the Jimmy Fund, Heart Fund, T. B. Drives and served as usherettes at many affairs throughout the city. Each year three out-of-town judges choose seventy-two junior girls to lead the freshman, sophomore, and junior girls in gym classes. Therefore each girl may be proud to be a Girl Officer in the Lowell High School Battalion. 105 « 4 U % 4 05 ycuv o 4 a- XbP tyyMd v _ „ 5 s j 9 ou jjLA ' ( 3 D ' - ?+ U ' %, • ' - V ; ;E A sU £ ' i? Students taking commercial courses train during their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years, and those showing exceptional ability are selected to serve on this Staff. When a student has completed a year of specialized training in this department, she is ready to take a place in the business world with a sense of integrity and self- confidence. Notini Music hath charm”, stated someone long ago, and those of us in the class of ’51 can readily agree to that statement after hearing the band in its many activities during the year. At the football games the boys and girls in the bright red and grey uniforms added the color and pep through their lively marches which are an essential part of every game. Playing at assemblies, various civic affairs, and at its annual concert, the band brought enjoyment to its audiences through its wide variety of musical selec- tions. The members of the red and grey outfit paraded at the Northeastern Massa- chusetts Music Festival, Field Day, and the annual Memorial Day Parade, gaining fur- ther recognition in the music field. Long remembered will be the outing at Canobie Lake completing for the Senior members their musical days at Lowell High. Capably directing the band is Mr. William J. Notini whose patience at the Monday and Friday afternoon rehearsals and during daily classes brought praise from many sources for the fine results that he accomplished. We salute Mr. Notini and his fifty piece band for their fine work throughout the year! 113 (Drchedtra IHlI a S ' kiLMrffi |,T m ] . 1 I - ; m im ' IM First row: Louis Trainor, Eric Fagan, Carol Brousseau, John Julenavorian, Helen Camara, Priscilla Hoare. O’Brien J Jhe Special oruS The maroon-garbed junior and senior members of Special Chorus bring to the minds of the class of ’51 musical culture at its best. Approximately eighty voices comprise this group under the capable leadership of Miss Gertrude F. O’Brien. With Miss Evelyn Kenyon as accompanist, the chorus holds its rehearsals in the auditorium each Thursday after school. Organized under John Maloney, President; James Lov- erude, Vice-President; Carol Tewksbury, Secretary; and Carole Sargent, Treasurer, the group, chosen from the entire school chorus of about three hundred students, sing throughout the year, not only to the students of Lowell High School, but to civic organizations, educational groups, and service clubs in and around Lowell. - . Oke This year’s orchestra, with an enrollment of approximately fifty students, re- hearses each Wednesday afternoon in the auditorium under the direction of Miss Gertrude F. O’Brien. The musical ability of this group has been proved frequently at various assemblies, the school play and graduation. As reward for this faithful membership, the students receive praise and excel- lent experience as well as one credit toward graduation. The orchestra has been an example of the patience, hard work, and excellent leadership bestowed by Miss Gertrude F. O’Brien. To her we extend our appreciation for the grand music we, the class of 51, have enjoyed. The busy school year of 195 0-1951 found the Science Club boasting a record of seventy active members. Because of this club ' s ability to procure fascinating speakers and informative talks, it has progressed from a small group of science enthusiasts to the hrge mem- bership of today. The members meet every other week and talk on such subjects as chemistry, biology, and photography. Under the capable supervision of Mr. James F. Conway, the club ' s advisor, the students subscribed to Science News Letter published by the Science Club of America. This ardent group is as active socially as it is intellectually. Extra, extra, read all about the famous Lowell High School Review, the popular streamlined publication that rolls off the presses at the beginning of each school month; and keeps the student body informed on what’s what with the Kirk Street Set. From its humble beginnings in 1817, until just ten years ago, the Review had been printed in magazine form; but it was discovered that by preparing it in tabloid form, more news could be included at lower cost. But the paper has come a long way since those days. Today the reader is re- warded with scoops”, the latest gossip in the Blah” column, an up-to-the-minute sports column, Profiles” of six of the most outstanding seniors; all this and much more in every edition of The Review.” The reporters of the staff are selected at the close of their Junior year. Staffers are chosen for ability in English, along with recommendations of English teachers. Probably the paper’s greatest worker is its faculty advisor, Miss Anna M. Ryan, who never ceases to be amazed that the paper manages to go to press” before the deadline and hit the newsstands” on time. Its greatest tribute lies in the fact that somewhere among the old and cherished souvenirs of nearly every alumnus of Lowell High School, can be found a worn and faded copy of The Review,” with all the news that’s fit to print.” And you know, that’s what makes it worth while! First row: Douglas Townsend, John Maloney, William Tsingarides, George Noval, James Loverude, Robert Dostaler, Roger Ducharme, Paul V. McLaughlin, Richard Rupp, Robert Stanley, Richard Foss, John Dunn. Second row: Edward Flanagan, Edward LaLiberty, James Doyle, John Janas, Joseph Colombo, Gerald Coughlin, Ronald Scott, Paul Bue, Philip Reilly, Richard Saunders, Laurence Walsh, Nolan Cunningham, Philip Crouse, Gerard Morin, James McAdams. A group of some forty high school boys met at the Pittsfield Y.M.C.A. on March 11, 1911, and organized the Pi-Hi. It has been learned from other sources that or- ganized work with high school boys was begun as early as 18 89, in Chapman, Kansas. A few years later, the Pittsfield group dropped the original name and chose Hi-Y iin its place. The purpose of the Hi-Y Club is To create, maintain, and extend, throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian character, through clean speech, clean sports, clean scholarship, and clean living. ” The Lowell Club meets weekly, to dine, and listen to interesting, educational speakers. Later in the evening, a business meeting is held. The Club also holds many social events, the most outstanding being the annual Faculty Night, when the members invite teachers to be their guests at dinner, and hear a noted after-dinner speaker. This year, Howard W. Fitzpatrick, Sheriff of Middlesex County, addressed the group. Fifteen Lowell Hi-Y members attended the 61st annual Older Boys’ Conference, in Westfield, Mass., on December 1, 2 and 3, 19 5 0. Many new and lasting friend- ships were made at this conference. A bowling league was begun this year. Trophies were awarded to the best bowl- ers, and the highest ranking team at the end of the season. The Club faculty adviser is Mr. Paul V. McLaughlin; and the Y” adviser is Mr. Wilfrid Mike” Pearson, General Secretary of the Lowell Y.M.C.A. The officers for 1950-5 1 were Bob Dostaler, President; Jim Loverude, Vice- President; Roger Ducharme, Secretary; Georgie Noval, Treasurer; Johnny Dunn, Program Chairman; Don Bacon, Publicity Chairman, and Phil Reilly, Hi-Y-Review Correspondent. 124 Un-Mi Seated : Dolores Twarog, Marcia Kostka, Florence Silveria, Elaine Giddis, Doris Perreault, Mary Torcogeorge, Theresa Michaud. Linder Mr. McHugh’s supervision, the party was a success when the boys and girls finally left their respective corners to enjoy the dancing and refreshments. Class officers Sanford Fasth, pres.; Elaine Giddis, vice-pres.; Barbara McCluskey, sec.; and John Barrett, treas; planned the activities. It was a great year for the football fans due to the arrivel of new head coach Ray Riddick, who quickly pulled the team out of its slump. Stars of the team which won six out of ten games were Captain Walter Tick” Kulis and Tarsey” Kouchalakos. Coach Haggerty’s track team gained a runaway victory over Lawrence, scoring S2J 2 points over our down-river opponents. The basketball team, with Gene Dziczek as captain, won thirteen of its twenty- two games, and although Tony Alchinski was well pleased with the scoring of Sam Goodsoozian, Clarence Edwards, and Captain John Ginalski, the basketball team was able to win only nine of its eighteen games. In our sophomore year the baseball, basketball, and track teams lost many con- tests and had only fair seasons. However, Ray Riddick and captain Roger Sanborn led the football team through an undefeated season and a trip to Jackson, Mississippi, where they lost to Bogalusa High by a small margin. Philip Reilly was president of the class, and the other officers were John Janas, Douglas Mercier, Ruth Anderson, and Carol Tewksbury. 127 At our social, Barbara Callahan, Ray McKeon, Sue Moynahan, and Jack Brennan were awarded prizes for their beautiful waltzing. Ronnie Scott was the only sophomore who had a part in the school play, A Woman of Sixteen ’ Then we became upperclassmen, and there followed a year full of activity. The football team emerged undefeated and beat Landon High 14-7 in a post- season game at Jacksonville, Florida, to become state co-champs with Arlington. V V Everyone was sports-minded that year, and for many reasons. Who could forget such names as Mavreides, Reynolds, Ready, Armstrong, Reilly, Martino, Godreau, Lemire, Picard, Linscott, Gibson, Spaneas, and track star Art Cryan? Phil. Reilly and Doug Mercier were elected class officers for the second time, Ray True, Doris Smith, and Carole Sargent were also elected. There were many juniors in the cast of the play, Melody Jones,” and Anne Murphy entertained everyone at the social with her hilarious monologue. Then we were seniors, spending our last year at Lowell High, and Dan Gillette was chosen to lead us through a year of fun. Doug Mercier retained his office for a third consecutive year. John Burgoyne was first vice-president, Carole Sargent, secretary and Carol Tewksbury, treasurer. Among our never- to-be forgotten experiences are the Lowell-Lawrence game which ended in a 13-13 tie. . . Record breaking Bob Stanley, captain of the track team . . . Leo Parent, captain of the basketball team, and member of the Massachusetts All-Star team. . . The success of That Brewster Boy,” in which many seniors, veteran actors, took part. . . Our own Charles Chiklis’ orchestra at the social. . . And the antics of Dan Gillette and Nancy Gilinson, which kept us laughing all year. . . Then we graduated, and, closing the cover of the book which was our four years of high school, we faced the future as alumni.
