auA n s ; Jlie Spindle LOWELL HIGH SCHOOL LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS 1950 Class OJc 1950 By Shirley Tessier We stand at life ' s doorway While waiting our chance; Now we step out bravely With no backward glance. With faith in the Lord We know we ' ll succeed, And with His divine help, We have all we need. We classmates of fifty Have great tasks to come. To prove ourselves worthy, As others have done. We must reach that high goal And strive for the sky; We must End the haven Where honor will lie. (Tune: Flow Gently Sweet Afton) J. E. The preparation of this year-book was no overnight assignment. The staff and its advisor spent many anxious hours in compiling, editing and arranging the multitudinous material produced between these colorful covers. It was in many respects, however, a labor of love, inasmuch as the facts and fan- cies recorded here represent the last connecting link between our scholastic deeds of today and our de- lirious dreams of tomorrow. This, then, is more than a souvenir. It is, rather, a treasure-chest of memories and associations. You are a valuable part of it. The Staff itself was merely the instrument of bringing your high school career and your achievements to the point of printed prominence. To Miss Ryan of the faculty, for her helpful hints and serious supervision of this editorial effort, as well as to all others who contributed in any way to the success of this venture, the Staff is genuinely grateful and appreciative. Here ' s paging the Class of ' U) LITERARY BOARD Christos Dorothea Charles 1 a r v E. Constance Patricia toumantzclis Sil va Johnston Smith Peterson 1 eclair .a. , MV ADMINISTRATION Raymond A. Sullivan — Headmaster Here in Lowell High School we have enjoyed the members of this mid-century class, the ninety-first to be graduated. The year 19 50 seems a definite milestone between the old and the new. Yet, while newness is always facing graduates, they must recognize that certain values are changeless, — well-conditioned minds and muscles, good work habits, an active sense of humor, and a self-respect based on integrity. If we on the faculty have assisted you to build a firm foundation for your labric of living, to strengthen attitudes helpful to our democracy, we feel that we have aided you to secure those desirable goals of happiness and success which we hope you will achieve. 10 William C. Since that time the number has increased to fifty girls and ten leaders. They have appeared at every football game and have taken part in Field Day and Memorial Day parades since then. They have also performed for charitable groups and shows. Each year the more advanced twirlers compete for medals. Two separate con- tests are held. The championship contest, which is divided into Class A. for leaders, and Class B, for girls eligible for future leadership, and the rookie contest, in which girls in their first year of twirling compete. The first and second prize winners of these contests receive a gold and a silver medal, respectively, and bronze medals are awarded to all other girls participating. Twirling and drilling are year round jobs because as soon as the football season is over the girls begin to practice for Music Festivals, Shows and Field Day. 105 zil ie eaimen 7 Colonel Brian F. With their character- istic navy blue and gold braided uniforms, flashing swords and pointed toe, the girls ' activities under the supervision of Miss Bawita Lawler, have helped make this school year a treasured one. The Girl Officers ' Ball in January was one of the most breathtaking events of the season. The group was also responsible for the success of Gym Night held in April. The officers have participated in civic as well as school functions, offering their services as solicitors for the T. B., Red Cross and Booster Drives. In addition, they have acted as checkers and usherettes. For over 50 years, juniors have been trained to excel in posture, voice, marching, clubs, mass drill and the dance in order that they might wear the proud garb of a girl officer. Moreover, in order to attain the honor, the girls must have attained good scho- lastic marks and deportment ratings. Consequently, when the three out-of-town judges select the top seventy-two girls to hold positions as girl officers, these chosen girls can surely call the gaining of their commissions an achievement. 109 w h J % • ■ r wm vi l) 4 . p i to sum 3 h V VV Q =e Switchboard Jperatord Front row: Helen Balkus, Doris Pare, Jane Moran, Irene Walker, Arlene Matley, Elaine Giants, Simone Breault. Whether on parade or on the stage this 1949-1950 band, in dazzling red and grey regalia, truly lived up to the enviable reputation of its predecessors dating back to January 1, 1923. As the band played on in traditional style at football games here and elsewhere, including a collegiate appearance in Boston as the musical atmosphere for the Univer- sity of Mississippi grid team, it gained national as well as community recognition. For the musicians, it was a pleasure to play, and for the rest of us, it was a privilege to hear. O ' Brien, the Lowell High School Orchestra of 19 5 has continued its traditional good work. This year ' s orchestra has a total enrollment of thirty-hve pupils who rehearse on Wednesdays at the close of school. The reward for the members ' faithful practicing is one credit toward their diploma plus a lot of good experience. The orchestra displays its versatility at various assemblies, at the annual school play, and at different non- school activities. New classes have begun this year in grammar schools and in high school. In these classes pupils have been learning how to play instruments so that they may join the orchestra in a few years. Their continual improvement has been both encouraging to their leaders and inspiring to their fellow classmates. Without Miss O ' Brien the orchestra would not be the fine organization it is. To her we bestow our thanks for the wonderful music she has presented throughout the years. 119 5 o o 2 A o i= u on 73 en -5 « w .y - Ja I 4 .a £ c - a ? c c 00 • — - Bid ; 3. Dating back to 1817, the Lowell High School Review — major pupil publication — is one of the cherished traditions and institutions among the student body, as well as a revelation, at times to the faculty. Replete with features that have a personal appeal to members of all classes, and recording High School happenings from month to month. The Review is both a chron- icle of serious events and a clearing house for humor, with the Blah column a uni- versal favorite. Other fixtures that seem to fascinate are Anthony ' s Anecdotes, Sports, Platter Chatter, and Profiles. In The Review, variety is certainly the spice of life. The ladies and gentlemen of the press who comprise The Review Staff are selected annually at the end of their Junior year by the faculty director of the periodical, Miss Anna M. Ryan, who also serves as advisor. Ability in English and recommenda- tion of English teachers are pre-requisites in staff candidates. The Review is published at the beginning of each month of the school year and copies are sold during all recess periods by members of the staff. Its best recommenda- tion, perhaps, lies in the fact that few copies are left on the shelves. It is, indeed, the book of the month at Lowell High. 127 jji.y In the year 1911 a group of High school boys met at the Pittsfield Y. M. C.A. and organized the Pi-Hi. A few years later the Pittsfield group dropped the original name and adopted the term Hi-Y. The Hi-Y is composed of high school boys some fifty in number. The members need not be of any special race, creed, or color, for all are welcome. The purpose of the Hi-Y is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian character through clean speech, clean living, clean scholarship, and clean sportsmanship. The Hi-Y meets every Tuesday night during the school year. Notice of these meetings are sent out each week by the club ' s secretary. At these meetings, which are really suppers prepared by the Y ' s Women Auxiliary, a guest speaker is invited to talk to the boys. The topics on which the speakers talk vary, and include sports, the importance of good character, and the developing of a likeable personality. There are numerous social activities, the highlights, faculty night, college night and the annual Tri-Hi, Hi-Y formal. The officers, elected at the last meeting of the year, preside over the following year ' s activities. Helping and advising the boys in running things smoothly are: Paul McLaughlin of the High School Faculty and Mike Pearson, General Secretary of the Y. M. C. All through this year the members of the Tri-Hi have indeed been successful in anything they have undertaken. With a total membership of thirty-five, under the supervision of Mrs. George Drew, the girls have been kept busy with civic and social functions. The members meet every Wednesday to hear interesting talks by great speakers, not only on vocational and culture fields, but on personality, style, and good-grooming. Afterwards refreshments are served. All through the year the girls themselves planned a delightful program of theatre and toboggan parties, dances, pot-luck suppers and hayrides. Their Sweetheart Dance, which was held in February was a tremendous success, along with other dances they have had. I he girls enjoyed all of this, naturally, but to them the most eagerly awaited event, the annual Tri-Hi — Hi-Y formal held during May was the best of all. 129 @- aton JwirlerA l odter Barbara Bcrke Theresa Ferreira Patricia Iby • LEADERS ■¥■ Mary Ann Fitzsimmons Mary Johansen Doris Pearsall Doris Lundstedt Georgia Petrakos June Molloy Shirley Santos Phyllis Anderson Lou Ellen Bamford Patricia Bcdard Patricia Bouvicr Elaine Bradley Catherine Brick Dorothy Brodcur Miriam Casey Maureen Cornellier Lila Counter Rita Cyr Betty Ann Decellcs Carol Ann Donahue Marilyn Donnelly Dorothy Donovan Eleanor Dowd Constance Ducharme • MAJORETTES + Olympia Efstathiou Carol Folkins Lorraine Gaudette Barbara Gerhart Mary Gomes Elaine Hamel Pauline Hamelin Charlotte Harrington Betty Jane Hart Barbara Hoit Rita James Mary Johansen Joanne Jutras Phyllis Keddie {Catherine Kelleher Judy Keohane Rose Kowalaski Barbara Lafterty Helen LaFlammc Gloria Lamothe Theresa Mcllo Joan Nealon Mary O ' Shea Rita Pearsall Ann Place Mary H. Co-captains of the ill-fated team were: Joseph DeMauro and Arthur Mercier. Coach Tony Archinski led the basketball team to third place in the greater Boston League. The team also won the city championship in ' 48. Although the track team boys had a successful season under Coach Haggerty, they were unable to retain the cup they won the year before in the Northeastern Interscholastic Track Meet. The baseball team, under the coaching of Stanley Stocklosa, had a fairly good season. Our president for the sophomore year was Raymond Armstrong; first vice-presi- dent, Fred Bennett; second vice-president, Edward Sinnett; secretary, Doris Pearsall; and treasurer, Charlotte Kosartcs. This year we were fortunate to have , ' s our new coach on the football team, Ray Riddick. We won six games out of eleven as compared with no wins in 1946. Cap- tain of the team was Walter Tick Kulis. whose hard running and accurate passing accounted for many touchdowns. We will never forget the 96-yard touchdown run made by Tarsey Kouchalakos on the opening kickoff of the Lowell-Lawrence game. The basketball team, coached by Tony Archinski again this year had a fair season, winning nine out of eighteen games. The track team enjoyed another successful season. After Lowell ' s runaway victory over Lawrence Coach Haggerty said that he was vcrv pleased with his boys. 131 Coach Stanley Stocklosa led his team through a very successful season. The team won thirteen of their twenty-two games. The Sophomore Social was highlighted by a hand-balancing act put on by Eddie Boucher. Leading the junior class were Ray Armstrong, President; Ernest Dixon, 1st Vice; Donna Smith, Sec; Charlotte Kosartes, 2nd Vice; and Doris Pearsall, Treasurer. In ' 49 our football team, under the brilliant coaching of Raymond Riddick, had an undefeated season. For their prowess on the gridiron, the boys were invited to Jack- son, Mississippi for a post-season game, which they lost by a narrow margin. Titus Plomeritus, one of the greatest lads ever to appear on the Lowell gridiron, led the team in scoring. Coach Archinski ' s basketball team had a poor season, winning only six games. Captain Peter Kalergeropolous and Sam Goodsoozian were the outstanding scorers. Jun- iors on the first team were: Burt Lightbody, Arthur Wrisley, John Reilly, Menil Mavraides and Robert Ready. The track team under Coach Haggerty couldn ' t quite manage to pull off a win. However, they had some great individuals: Captain Julian Mroz, Northeastern inter- scholastic 1000-yd. champion; Bob Swan, shot-put specialist; Brian Reynolds, high jump expert; Fred Palowski, 600-yd. speedster and Joe Mello, a consistent winner in the dash. The school play was A Woman of Sixteen. It was a sparkling comedy pre- sented by Miss Mary Casey. Robert Wilcox was the only junior in the play this year. The Junior Social was conducted by Mr. Conway. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of Billy Vale. It would be foolish to write about the attainments of the athletic teams for this year for no one could forget: Riddick ' s Raiders , the ' Gator Bowl champs with names such as Reynolds, Mavraides, Linscott, Felton, Ready, Spaneas, Martino, Gibson and Armstrong, or the basket-ball team which finished the season in a blaze of glory by copping the Merrimack Valley Championship with such players as Bob Ready, Art Wriiley, Burt Lightbody, Gene Horton, Leo Avila, and Leo Parent. Who could forget the track team of Bob Stanley, Art Cryan, Brian Reynolds. Minnie Mavraides, Jack Bridgeford, and Bob Mullen, or the baseball team with the hitting of Bill Turcotte and the catching of John Janocha. Eileen King caught everyone ' s eye at the Senior Social with her beautiful dress. Bob Wilcox, Fred Bennett, and Elwood Bent kept everyone laughing not only at the social but all year. And then we became .... alumni. . . . 132 ' ■■■ wB- jk-- ■ c «4b IV hTT wMi  •!■ ; te | J -., 1 V w P .
