Lowell Varsity Places First in AAA Title Race The 1966 Varsity grid team played an exciting brand of football. The Indians finished the Round-Robin in a first place tie with Lincoln and St. Ignatius, compiling a 7-2 won-lost record. In the Hrst playoff game the Cards downed arch-rival Lincoln, 7-6, and gained a spot in the Turkey Day championship game against S.I. The final contest saw the Wildcats squeeze by the Cards, 21-14, the winning touchdown coming with only 31 seconds left to play. Lowellis defense was strong on the line and in the backfield. Under attack of such linemen as Carl Nielsen, Wayne Martinez, Larry Jacobsen, Tom Wilson, and Cene Vlahos, many an opposing ball carrier found long yardage hard to get. Backs Ernie Li, Ed Perkins, and Sheldon Wong made the Indian secondary an airtight unit. The offense was lead by Jeff Karp. Karp ran well and passed accurately, his favorite targets being Ken Richardsen, Brazell Carter, and Ralph Bayard. Fred Coleman, Paul Fama, Rich Kemp, Li, and Perkins were ball carriers who consistently pounded their way through for long gains. The fine season was a tribute to Mr. Ed Burns, who was in his first year as varsity coach. Assisting Coach Burns were Mr. Robert Braunreiter and Mr. jack McBride.
