S4 Ni PI-EATERS IN MATH The mathematics courses offered at Lowell, designed to give the student a basic concept in working with num- bers and equations, serves also as a means to give students a good rea- soning power and to make them use their minds and think. ' 1 1f l ' sr' 'f'-.u Q, f' -- - XX's s's:ni. i elementary algebra, a course which is created to teach the pupil something about fundamental mathematics and to prepare him for the upper division courses of Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Also included in this program is Plane Geometry which gives a con- ception of working with problems concerning angles, triangles, circles, and squares, and induces the student to really settle down and think. For the more advanced students a course of Math Analysis is offered and counts as credit for future col- lege courses, As a whole the Lowell Mathematics De- partment is a good means to give a student a good general knowledge of math, and an excellent back- ground for future use. .lf .3 'fig W ti if

FOREIGN TONGUES ALSO TASTED Headed by Miss Osuna the Lowell Foreign Language department is designed chietly to enable students to de velop somewhat ot an understanding ot foreign language Latin French Spanish and German are all taught tor eight semesters and meet the basic entrance requirements to most at the universities. All of the languages mentioned above otler a beginning year ol grammar and basic vocabulary, bringing in later, an understanding ol the designated language through con- versation. ln the advanced courses the time is devoted mainly to the reading of short stories and novels, conversa- tion and discussion ol the country from which the language stems. A new field in toreign language which has recently been added to the Lowell curriculum is Conversational Italian. Through its study the student is able in the period ol one year to learn enough Italian to converse in' it. I I ti 'QU
