THIS IS OUR STORY . . . it begins as an idea unborn, as a collection of blank pages, as a dream to be fulfilled. At the start many factors were to be considered. There was a photographer to choose, a printer to be decided upon, and most important, a theme and dummy to be carefully planned an-d or- ganized. The dummy is a rough draft of the actual yearbook, necessary in approximating costs, determining layouts, and presenting an advanced look at the final product. We had something extra to contend with -change. lt was necessary for us to tread on new ground for we altered the shape of the book, the materials which were used and the-overall pattern and design. Next came the lists -the never-ending lists: what-to-do-today lists, graduation lists, -class lists, club, page, advertising and activity lists. There were a thousand loose ends that had to be sorted and woven into a reasonable pattern. l lt was our aim to provide you with a.book that would truly be yours -a living record of your year.fThis was our aim, and you the classes of Fall '57 and Spring '58 proved that this was your desire, too, for it was your spirit that pulled us through the rough times. Pictures constitute a space majority in this album, and we owe a great debt to BudlBosco and his camera crew for this. We'll never be able to repay his sincere interest and concern.. We bid our thanks to Miss Harrison, -Mr. Perino, -Mrs. Higgins, -Miss Osuna and Miss McBride for their understanding above and beyond the call of duty. We appreciate Russ Leland's cover design, Keiko Yamagami's artistic contributions, Jan Vanderburgh's level-headedness and our student photographers' gritty determination. Mere words cannot express our appreciation to Mr. Brauer, who dedicated himself to this publication. Without Mr. Brauer's suggestions, fortitude, calmness, good sense and downright hard work this book would never come out. We thank the unsung heroes for their unselfish work in your behalf. This book has gone through so much difficulty and confusion that at one time we felt like giving up. We couldn't give up though, for we, the Editors, felt that the '58's worth had to be known. This Red and White is a part of usp if you feel one-tenth of what we feel then our hopes have been reached and our dreams have been fulfilled. The tears, frustration, concern and sleepless nights will not have been in vain. Wg present you with YOUR 1958 Red and White - our story is ended, yours is just beginning - rea on. Mr. Perino told them their duties and obligations and added that they acted as a House of Representatives. It is the duty of the reg. rep. to bring up any ideas suggested by his registry. Also committees were organized: Parliamentary, Constitution,l Finance, and Welfare. All took port in helping to keep our school running correctly and efficiently. -...M FALL EXECUTIVE BOARD Row I: J. The athletes you see wearing the cardinal red sweaters with the big white L on the left pocket are all upstanding members of this fine organization. Rick Risbrough held the Fall presidency and did a swell iob. He planned and worked out a colorful school dance with decorative help from the Block L boys. The Block L award is based on a nine point system.. The sponsor of this up-and-coming society is Mr. Top man this spring was president Tony Ellis, who also held office as fall vice president. Every term the Block L sponsors 5 traditional Block L dance. Ar the end of each term they have a banquet for the purpose of presenting awards and selecting w officers. This banquet is usually held at the Fox Hostess House. Among this term's distinguished speakers were Mr. and Mrs. Perino and Mrs. Duffy, guest speaker from the Board of Educa- nn. The banquet was very successful, according to Keiko Yamagami, fall president. Helping Keiko was Julie Tracy, secretary. .' f . F A fiiziiii . ff . BIG SISTER SCCIETY When Lowell receives students, the new girls are immediately placed in the care of Gig Sisters. The purpose of the Big Sisters is to help new- comers to become acquainted with each other and to help them feel more at ease in their big new school. The girls take full charge of their little sisters and adiust them to Lowell. In the beginning of the term the Big Sisters give a luncheon in honor of the new students. Besides refresh- ment, the fall term Big Sisters provided talent and cartoons. A fashion show of school clothes was given in the spring. One finds these girls conducting a study session before school in the girls' cafeteria and coaching where and when they can. Their other acti- vities include sponsoring a school dance with the Big Brothers. Miss Graeber was always there to assist JanetShapeero, the fall chair- man, Deana Epstein, vice-president, Emy Kumamoto, secretary, Sandy Sherman, Sally Pearce, social chairmen, and Barbara Cohn, coordinator. In the spring she helped Sandy Sherman, chairman, Lynne Sibell, vice- president, Sue Cantou, secretary, June Spence, Lois Horenstein, social chairmen, and Barbara Lustig, coordinator. fl I SANDRA SHERMAN Spring President Fall H-I2 Big Sisters Big Sisters JANET SHAPEER Fall President . - - - Row I2 0.l'laim J.Spence D. This society, which has been a big credit to Lowell, has been around for many years. The Big Brothers are partially responsible for the many BOB CURLEY extra-curricular activities planned to make the new Lowellites feel at home. First on the agenda, the Big Brothers combined with the Big Sisters to present the semi-annual Newcomer's Reception and Dance, at which the new students become acquainted with their classmates. Next was the intramural play-day given for the same purpose. There are many, many other activities taking place all the time. The Big Brothers met their little brothers four or five times every semester to help with their problems. The fall officers were Bob Basso, President, and Bob Curley, Vice- DON BELKIN President. One of Lowell's most important groups is the Rally Committee, whose responsibility it is to plan and execute good, entertaining rallies which will effectively rouse school spiriti This term's rally committee met every Monday at 8:00 under Chairman Steve Horn. As usual, their toughest iob was coming up with original talent for the rallies, and then talking the original talent into performing. Among those who made things a little easier this year were Sherry Rusk, pantomimist, Lowell's Dixieland Band, and, of course, Lowell's most popular singer, Duke Williams. This term saw the Rally Committee introduce a new idea for building spirit and game attendance. A Big Game Day was de- clared and organized for the Washington game, with each class pro- viding its own talent for the rally, and working under its own yell leader at the game, to see who could show the best spirit, As always, Mr. Anlno's services were invaluable. The vice president is re- sponsible for one of the most important services performed by the CSF. These honor students volunteer to help struggling students in the sub- iects with which they are having trouble. Any student who asks for a CSF coach will receive one, and often he will find that, with the help of the coach, he can raise his grade. The Lowell CSF has received much publicity inthe San Francisco papers for its unselfish service. If a student has been a member of the CS F for four terms after his freshman year, and if one of those terms has been in his senior year, he be- comes a life member and receives the coveted CSF pin. ln the fall term there were five life members in the Lowell chapter and the spring group added thirteen life members to the C S F. The malor outing of the spring term for the CSF was their trip to Stanford to tour the campus and find out something about the Stanford traditions. The spring Twlrp Dance was also sponsored by this active group. n CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION BOB BURTON Fall CSF President In spite of the high scholastic requirements for membership, almost I50 Lowellites gained admission to the California Scholwship Fechration this yea. The CSF is affiliated with the National Honor Society, and many of its members find that member- ship in the national organization is important when they apply for scholarships to universities outside the state. 'To ioin the CSF, one must have I0 honor points. An A in a prepu-ed subiect is worth tl-ree points, a B is worth one point. In an unprepared subiect, A counts one and a half and a B is one half. Fall officers were Robert Burton, president, Jero- lin Cherin, vice-president, Kcxen McClellan, secre- tory, and Albert Epes, treasurer. Mrs. Wallach is the sponsor. Although the CSF pl ocs emphasis on the scholas- tic achievement of its members, it dso sees to it that they have fun. It is combined of orchestra, choir, band and dancers. The orchestra played Tune and Work- out, Galatea and the 4th symphony by Tchaikowsky. If it weren't lor the capable direction of Mr. Krieger, the orchestra would not have been a success. The orchestra has been very fortunate in having guest conductors at their re- hearsals. They were Mr. Hardin, Mr. Ryan, and Mr. Martin, students from State College. Among the out of school activities for orchestra is the Honor Orchestra for students throughout the city. USHERS RESERVE The Ushers Reserve has been a tradition at Lowell for a good many years. It is an organization that gives students the cultural opportunity to hear great artists, such as Arthur Rubenstein and to attend operas, symphonies, ballets, and other musical pro- grams. There are approximately fifty students in the Ushers Reserve, and the chairman for 6 terms has been Carolyn Green- berg. The assistant chairman is Barbara Andre. The members of the Ushers Reserve sign up for the perfor- mance at which they would like to usher at the beginning of each month. One of'the special features they attended was My Fair Lady , which all thoroughly enioyed. Their reasons are varied--some recognize the necesslty of knowing slide rule opera- tion, some are simply interested in studying the Instru- ment, some are trying to anticipate academic need of the slide rule in later years. The Slide Rule Club is sponsored by Mr. Barker, head of Lowell's mathematics department, who gives of his own time to help coach the fledgling slipstickers. Slide ruling is not confined to boys alone. Almost 4O'75 of this years membership were girls, who no doubt have their own reasons for be- ing interested in the workings of the slide rule. Among the girls ln thls year's club were Marianne Basich, Sue Windholz, Harriet Tornoe and Florence Muto. THE lTALlAN CLUB One of the most active at Lowell this term is the Italian Club. lt was started when a group of students intereste In music wanted to learn more about the Italian languagi so that they could understand the opera more fully. Just few students lolned the club at first and the meetings weri held once a week after school. But the club expanded t. such a big group that now the Italian Club meets as c regular class of over thirty-three students, held sevent period under the capable teaching of Mrs. Catelli. Theri are no specified officers in the club and almost all convel sation is In Italian. Many activities were planned for the school year. Threi parties were given in school and Italian food was served All the students decided that one of the best activltie that could be planned was to go and see an ltalian opera so they set off to see La Travlatu. They also took a tou through the De Young Museum and the World Trade Cente where exhibits from every country weredlsplayed Including exhibits from Italy. Another main interest was the ltallar Tourlst Office in the Saint Francis Hotel where the stu dents were supplied with information about outstanding places in Italy, WRITERS' CLUB The purpose of the Writers' Club is to en- ourage the writing of original short stories, ssays, one act plays, compositions, and oems. The twenty-five stmidents who belong a this club analyze such writing for self-im- trovement. To ioin the Writer's Club, one eeds no qualifications except the desire to lrite, Each membgr turns out three pieces If work per term and must, if asked, read his fork before the group for criticism. ln addi- ion to the constructive criticism offered to ach member, the meetings sometime include istening to great works of literature, some- imes read on records by the authors them- elves. The meetings are held every other Wed- esday of the school term and this term the vriters were presided over by President Paul 'rimble. Eva Herden, Marietta Gianetti, and 'uke Williams held the other officers' posts. larietta Gianetti and Karmalee Hanson pre- ided as officers during the Fall term.. Miss letcalf sponsors the Writers' Club. THE LATIN CLUB The Latin Club is sponsored by Dr. Howard and is one of the most active clubs at Lowell. Toward the beginning of the school term, the Latin Club gave a Roman banquet at Saturnalia, which is a holiday season in Rome. The banquet was held in true Roman tradition. Guests sat on cushions on the floor and ate a full course meal off little tables. For entertainment, performances were given by dancers and acrobats, after which followed games and dancing. On March 14-l6,a State Convention was held in Los Angeles, and seven members of the Latin Club flew down to attend it. The purpose of the club, according to Dr. Howard, is to go into the phases of Roman life for which there is not time in class and to create in- terest in the Roman languages. The club is open to anybody interested in the Latin language. The full officers were president, Martin Lowen- thal, Secretary-Treasurer, Susan Jackson, and Editor, Frank Moran. The spring officers were Pre- sident, Wakelyn Matthews, Secretary-Treasurer, Thomas Sloss, and Editor, Frank Moran. The club meets every other Wednesday during Sth period in Room 152 and also puts out a purely Latin newspaper once a year, ' 52 'l: L. Kay, K. Hanson, B. Juhl v Il: D, Purcell, B. Theiss, M. Four members have qualified for national competition and five members for state. Lowell is the leading National Forensic League chapter in California. Recently, Mr. J. A. Perino was made an honorary member of the society. E The activities of the forensic club are many. The members debate, have extemporaneous and impromptu speaking, dramatic and humorous interpretations, and original oratories and oratorical interpretations. The forensic members take part in various tournaments throughout Northem California. For example, those who qualify go to Santa Barbara for the state tournaments. The objectives of forensics are to develop an emotional and intellectual stability in every member and to bring about a closer unity between student and school. The hope for the future is that the Forensic Society will gain more and more members as the years progress and that the importance to all will be known. Row I: Row II: J. Logie' N. Rosen, P. Roger Brindle, Regimental Commander and James Johnson, Battalion Commander, directed Lowells ROTC this year. The drill team was under the leadership of Captain John Dederian, who whips the boys into shape. The Drill Team is organized to train outstanding cadets. They are taught fancy drill to build coordinations and precision timed execution of movements. They practice three times a week in order to prepare for the city-wide Spring Festival held at the Civic Auditorium. The team was judged best this year by the 91st, Infantry Divi- sion. Lowell is proud of its ROTC and has good reason because eleven men since the beginning of the program have reached either Admiral or General in the Regulars. Intelligent, obedient, loyall to our school and country are the merrbers of the Saber Club. The cream of the military crop, they enjoy the privileges and facilities of the Saber Club. This society was organized to provide recreation for the officers of Lowell High Battalion. Under the sponsorship of Sgt. Glassick, this club of long standing thrives on the many activities and facilities awarded to it for its hard work for Lowell High. They are an honor to this school and a credit to the combined R.O.T.C. units through- out the city. Activities include participation in the annual regimental ball, officers dinners, and many picnics and hikes. Officers of the Saber Club are elected each semester to fulfill the duties that make the club one of the best in San Francisco. Lowell's Frosh-Soph football team, composed mostly of freshman, is the youngest and most inexperienced of Lowell football teams, yet this term's new coach, Bob Braunreiter, worked them into a fighting ball club. The little giants played six games this year and ended with a 2 win - 4 loss record. Their wins over Poly and Balboa, two of the toughest teams in the league, demon- strated the spirit and foundation being built into the future varsity team. The Frosh team had a bigger turnout this year than both the J. V. and Varsity teams. With all three teams together they practically took up the whole of the polo ground practice field, not leaving much room for S. H. who shares the field with us. The possibilities of Frosh-Soph players making next year's varsity are promising. lt is hard to pick individual players in such a large, well rounded team but Coach Braunreiter believes that two outstanding men in the backfield are Jim Cofer and Joe Alvarez, while Dennis Carroll ably holds down the line. rooTsAu. Tim Curtis, Lowell's top cin- derman, was a real tiger as he dominated the 100, 220, and 440 yard runs going undefeated throughout the first four meets. Because of constant rain at the beginning of the season, the Lowell pacers got off to a slow which are listed below, were all bettered by the end of the season. All of these hard working trackmen were looking forward to a high berth in the All City track meet held on Saturday, May 17, at Kezar. The 880 Relay team consisting of Kelleher, Payne, Cobo and Curtis have turned in one of the top times in Northern California at 1233 flat. Bulwarked by Don Hufnagel's controlled pitching and the teamwork in the field, Mission High was downed by the Lowell Varsity. Among the returning veterans who will beef up the forward wall comes the new school year will be Jim Elliot, Leo Schreier, Ruben Joseph, and Dennis Wong. Halfbacks will be Pete Hacker and Jaime Valle.Additional backfield soccermen will beArnold Wong, Derek Beard, Chuck Breyer, Dan Marble, and Fred Gundran, When the coll for players went out last fall, fif- teen men showed up. The Riding Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday after school at the Mar Vista Stables. This term the club was sponsored by Miss Chase and Miss Sink. In the club the girls learn English riding under the guidance of Mrs. Dev Sabetini, owner of Mar Vista Stables. They ride in the arenas and on sunny days ride along the beach. The highlight of the spring term was the Inter-Scholastic Horse Show, The show was a big success, stated Valerie Smith, fall manager. Helping Valerle wlth the activities were her assistants, Jerilyn Cherin and Linda Sherman. Every term the riders put on the Lowell Horse Show, each girl participating in at least one event on the program. The Riding Club now consists of about 65 members. PAGE 96 if- G. A. A. SWIMMING Every Monday after school, the G.A.A. swimming takes place, About 125 girls go out for this sport, The girls used to swim at the Y.M.C.A., but this year they have switched over to the Rossi pool at Mgjkxt Arguello and Anza Streets. The girls enioy the pool and it's big, They are divided into three separate W A classes: beginners, intermediates, and swimmers. With Miss Furgis as the sponsor and Suzanne g V Cantou as manager, the swimmers have managed to have a wonderful time when they go. During 70 swimming instructions are given for beginners only! But this is not a part of G.A.A. Trained swimmers from Lowell who have taken Red Cross training at Fleischacker pool during the summer help instruct the classes after school. G.A.A. VOLLEYBALL Volleyball has long been one of the most popular after-school sports at Lowell. Participating in this sport gives one an opportunity to have fun and make new friends at no cost. Ten attendances are required to receive a G,A.A. Award. The girls wear the regulation gym uniform and observe all the rules of the regular P. E, Dept. Students of all grades increased their volleyball skill once a week after school under the capable tutelage of Miss Furgis, sponsor of G.A,A. volleyball. In the fall, this sport was under the direction of manager Kathy Yoshikawa and her assistant, Marcy Silberstein. Spring found March in the position of manager, with assistants Harriet Tornoe and Sherry Chamove. Lowell volleyball enthusiasts attended two playdays, one at Balboa in the fall, and one with Washington in the spring. They also sponsored games held during the double lunches. G.A.A. SOFTBALL With a mighty swing and a Miss, you can be sure this is G.A.A. Softball. Every Tuesday afternon you can see these mighty players out in the girls' and boys' yards making home runs, striking out, and occasionally breaking a few windows. The girls are divided into four teams, and are under the capable supervision of Mrs. Kingsbury. One of their maior events ofthe spring term was to attend a softball- game at the Big Rec between Lowell anH Lincoln. Captains of the teams were Bess Carlotsis, Shirley Davenport, Christal Schenk, and Cherie Singer. There were about 60 girls altogether that participated in softball this term. Spring manager PAGE 97 was Linda Woods, and her assistants were Linda Briggs, and June Spence. G.A.A. MODERN DANCE This group has displayed many of their works to the student body in many of the school activities. In the varieties the Lowellettes, composed of modern dance girls, tapped their own version of Strike Up The Bank . Another group did a dance to Bayou Chant . The Latin Club called upon the dancers for entertainment at the Latin banquet. During the spring term, the girls gave a spring festival with dances composed by themselves. The modern dance group is sponsored by Miss Boehm, the head of the Girls' P. E. department. Patti Fell was elected to act as the girls' full manager. Paula Beavin took over the office in the spring. After each term, the gi.rls can be seen giving themselves all-eating parties and putting on all the weight they lost during the term. The advanced dancers met every Monday after school and the beginners met every Wed- nesday after school. At the courts the girls l The club is sponsored b G. A. A. BOWLING One of the popular G. A.
