Heard singing at the Holiday Varieties of the Fall Term of '52 was the Lowell High Choir. Under the direction of Mr. Berry, they did a swell job. Such outstanding members as Suezane Card- inal and Bob Thein did solo work for the Choir and other school affairs. Besides singing at the Varieties, the vocalists ot Lowell sang, as always, at the graduation. The choir was the guest artist trom Lowell at the Emporium one evening near Christmas. They brought a fine name back to Lowell. The Advanced Girls Glee Club under Mr. Berry has worked hard and sung at several affairs. The Dance Band, led by Gil Sciacqua, played at many ot the school attairs as well as outside ot Lowell. Four evenings this year, the Dance Band gave their time to entertain the psychiatric patients at Letterman General Hospital. The Dance Band has lost many ot their old musicians in graduation this year. Among them are Darrel Bloom, sax, Kent Lundgren, trum- pet, Ed Cholewa, sax, Curt Culver, trombone, and the star drummer, Brad Burke. The Dance Band is a strictly student-run organization and is very proud ot this tact. DANCE BAND FIRST ROW--V. Hebert, J. Frease, D. Polissar, G. Sciacgua, A. Johnson, B. Potter, P. Gebhard. Girlz' Athlvtir Aaanriatinn Do you know why the Lowell girls have such good figures and always look so healthy? Only one answer . . . they participate in the various G.A.A. sports. A good many of the Lowell girls take part in some sport, if not two or three. Whether they bowl, skate, or bat a ball, there's always a place for them. On Mondays and Tuesdays you can find the Modern Dancers busy at work learning new dances and exercises This is one of the sports which takes part in the Varieties and also does some television work now and then under the fine supervision of Miss Boehm and manager Stephanie Davis Volleyball seems to be a sport which is en joyed by a lot of girls lt is a good all around sport and manager Sybil Cahen is always on hand to help the girls improve serve or learn to set em up better Enjoy swimming? Then the YWCA on Wednesdays is the place for you If you can t swim, don't let it bother you, there's excellent instruction provided by manager Sylvia Hol- lingsworth under the supervision of Miss Strauss. O 0 to Many Lowell students are a part of a group which is very important in the proper function- ing of the school's activities. This group con- sists of the various small organizations in our school, However an even larger group know nothing of this group, and because of this they are losing out on an important part of Lowell life, The different clubs which exist in Lowell fulfill one of the most important needs of the students, providing for them a way to partici- pate together in their personal interests. GIRLS GLEE FIRST ROWWS. Mzitosich, S. Mierson, B. Neilson, D. Among these clubs are the Writers' Club, which turns out an annual book of their efforts, and the Chess Club, which has matches against many schools and groups. The Chemistry and Biology Club made many field trips during the year, these trips served a dual purpose of being enjoyable and educational. The Public Address Crew is of direct service to the school, they set up the sound equipment for the rallies, games, and dances. These clubs combined with the Slide Rule Club, and Chinese Students Club are certainly an important part of the Lowell castle. R Callins, L. Hearnc, D. Dell Era. SECOND ROWJP Wong, S. Herrington, M. Lowellites could bc found at Soda Springs, Kiski, and the Sierra Club flying down the frozen slopes. Between oight and five, the lucky snow-lovers could be found skiing, building snow-men, and hurling snow balls, and thoroughly enjoying every min ute of it. Among the experts could be found Mr. Anino and Mr. Buckley, who frolicked as much as the students. . . . which all goes to show that Old Man winter isn't so bad after all, -43,, X asv? l Q, S sg B+ If 'Egg 5, li' W-we ,, 5 nhlvn ining this Sun As the sun goes, so goes a Lowellitel And truer words were never said, because wherever there is sun, you are bound to find a Lowellite enjoying it, Favorite among the sun spots is Fairfax, and many of our royal ladies could be found there on sunny Saturdays and Sundays, in outfits that would have shocked their English predecessors. The knights, though not in armor, made their appearances in the sun, too, though from the looks of this page, not very oftenl For those lucky enough, Palm Springs helped the early sun tans along during Easter vacation, ln the summer, Tahoe, The Russian River, and countless other places overflowed with Lowell lords and ladies. These Lowellites really got in the swing ol being a part of the red-brick castle. The privil- leges ot upperclassmen were their at last, though studying was harder than before. The whole year was filled with picnics, dances, oth- er social and school activities, and a great deal of good hard work. The Juniors got to know their own class- mates much better and on a much more friend- ly basis, Lowell really turned out to be greater than they had anticipated. S. l. scored all of their points in the first half, three of their touchdowns the result of intercepted passes. Lowell looked much better in the second half, but could score only once. Wes Muto set up the touchdown, sprinting 52 yards, and Grant Cook went over. POLYTECHNIC-NOVEMBER I Mike Leaskou's record-breaking perform- ance was not enough as a great Poly team turned back the lndians for the tenth straight year, 33-2l. The Parrots got two good breaks and I4 points in the first quarter, but after that Lowell, led by Leaskou, outplayed them. The big end cinched All-City honors by catch- ing nine passes for l4l yards and a touchdown, and running for big yardage. Choo-Choo Chuhlantseff and John Pope also countered for the Indians, and guard Harry Greenberg was outstanding on offense and defense. WASHINGTON-NOVEMBER 7 Washington made use of the long gain to slip by the Big Red Machine, 28-27, in a thrill- ing game marred by numerous penalties. The Indians drove to a touchdown in the failing minutes, Johnny Pope kicked the conversion, and it looked like a sure tie. Lowell was off- sides, however, and Pope's second kick was no good. Sam Kuhn blocked a punt for the first score, and after that the lead changed hands frequent- ly, with Pope, Wes Muto, and Mike Leaskou registering for the Redmen. LINCOLN-NOVEMBER I4 Determination was not enough to overcome the Mustang attack as the Indians lost the season finale and a possible play-off berth, I4- 6. Lowell's fast backs were hampered by slip- pery footing, and only Wes Muto could gain consistently, making I22 of Lowell's l26 rush- ing yards, and scoring the only touchdown on a 70 yard bolt. Harry Greenberg's pass intercep- tion and return set up the score. Quarterback Grant Cook was injured, and although Mike Gainey did a fine relief job, Cook's experience and accurate passing were missed. -.781 me f' t - E . lk ? Mitchell. 0111155 nuntrg l Lowell is a school not noted for their cham- pionship soccer teams, but rather for the spirit and hustle which these teams always display. This year's team was no exception. Although Lowell ended its season with a record of O-8, they did not stop hustling for one minute. Lowell had the dubious distinction of setting a record that will never be broken, Although they tried very hard, they didn't score a goal all season. Lowell's soccermen did come close to a tie when they played Saint Ignatius in the game of the season. Saint Ignatius scored a goal in the last period to eke out a l-O win. The team showed improvement in every game and should be much stronger next year. The team-was led through the season by two very outstanding players. They were Bob Hoel- ter and Alfred Angulo. Hoelter played center- forward, and Angulo played inside-right. Other outstanding members of Coach Drys- dale's team were Pete Sah-fullback,Jim Moody- fullback, Tom Stern-halfback, Jerry Polzin-left A -R - wing, Marvin Keyes-goalie, Douglas Tanner- right wing, and Terry Wallace-halfback. Determination, natural ability, intestinal for- titude, and hard training are what it takes to make a cross country man, Lowell's Cross Country Team had just that and more last year, but it still wasn't enough. With Old Stadium as a backdrop, the team downed all oppon- ents until the last two meets, when they lost to Lincoln and Washington, Burning with the fire of vengeance, the boys vowed to win the City Meet for themselves and their coach, Don Travers. Their effort was supreme, but still the team was beaten. However, they came within just one point of the City Championship. Led by the nine minute club of Pete Reider, Don Brown, and Dick Bullock, the team was supported with a strong nucleus of Bob Shahovskoi, Medford Todd, Ron Simpson, Bill Davis, Bob Ferroggiaro, Price Hall, and Carl Hanken. These ten stalwarts were the boys who held up the great Lowell Tradition of fine track teams. Svnrrvr SOCCER lst Row: T. Wallace, J, Moody, Roth, A. Angulo, N. Brock, B. League was rough this season, and Lowell's l3O Ib. club failed to make the playoffs. The Indians finished the league race with a 4-4 record. This record included wins over Lincoln, Balboa, Sacred Heart, and Washington, the losses were to Saint Ignatius, Galileo, Poly, and Mission. The two best games of the season were the upset over favored Washington and the close win over Sacred Heart. It was a high spirited team which downed the Eagles by the decisive score of 34-26. In the S.H. game it was that future star, See Alterman, who scored in the last few seconds to send the game into over- time, and then won the game 54-5I by his long floor shot. FIRST ROW-C, Tom, J. The sea- son's final game found the Indians in a three way tie for first place with Balboa and Wash- ington. The season started with the Indians gallop- ing over the Lincoln Mustangs, 4l-22. St. Ignatius was second on the Lowell list, falling gracefully to the tune of 28-l9. Mission next fell before the Red axe, 45-32, with Sacred Heart doing the same, but with difficulty, 3l-30. None too impressed with their Sacred Heart victory the Indians went on to beat Washington 22-I9. Lowell then made it seven in a row by beat- ing Poly and Galileo by scores of 3l-26 and 44-28 respectively. 1 12 Qaskethall 'I'I2's BASKETBALL Ist Row: N. Urano, S. Reed, J Daniels, T. Levison, J. Close losses to Lincoln, 26-22, and St. Ignatius, I9-I 6, got the Papooses off on the wrong foot, and it looked like a long, sad season. The Indian quintet came through with their first victory against Mission, 3l-27. Sacred Heart fell next, 34-30. The five little Indians looked forward to the Washington game confi- dently, but the Eaglets rudely shattered their dreams, 26-IO. But the Little Red Machine was not discour- aged. They took out their disappointment on another bird, the Polytechnic Parrot, drubbing the traditional rival, 30-I9. With the Poly scalp on the war-belt, Galileo and Balboa were easy prey.
