The steps of Lowell were the steps of the first high school west of the Mississippi-of a school 12 vears older than the University of California. l,owell's steps have heen in many places-on Bush Street. on the corner of Sutter and Octavia. and even at Poly and Galileo fwhen Lowell was being earth- quaked-proofedl. Our steps today have horne the weight of l.ow- THE FRONT STEPS ellites for 36 years. Down them have gone Lowell boys to fight and die in two world wars: to attain prominence in business. professional and political lifeg and to marry Lowell girls whose children many of us are. They get to he a habit. those steps 4 dates are arranged there, jokes cracked. gossip exchanged. dashes made to and from the old 2l . new acquain- tances acquired-all amid friendly 3:10 confusion. On week-ends, vacations and at night the front steps are deserted. But on one night each term, some- time after midnight. after the Prom, the graduates return to sing the Hymn. San Francisco has rneant much to Miss Eugenie Lacoste. She was born in the Mission district when it consisted of country homesw-the lot on which her home was built comprised 15 acres! She is a graduate of Girls' High School. and of the Univer- sity of California where she specialized in Creek. Latin. Modern Languages, and Botany. Miss Lacoste never intended to be a teacher-she had planned to do graduate work in archaeology. However. when offered a teaching position at Mis- sion High by Mr. Clark. the principal. she accepted. and thus began a career that continued until April l. 1946. when she retired. Wlien Mr. Clark was appointed principal of Lowell he asked Miss Lacoste to come with him. She didn't want to. The Mission district was her 8 homeg Mission High was her school. She loved her work. During World War 1 some 600 Mission stu- dents, under her guidance. had knitted sweaters for the boys in the service. Finally she agreed to come. ln the Fall of 1919 young Miss Lacoste came to Lowell to teach history. In 1926 she became the Vice-Principal tshe had pre- viously served as Dean of Girls in 1923 and 19241. Widely traveled in both Europe and the Orient. Miss Lacoste speaks French fluently. having learned it as a child. When Lowell was smaller the entire student body was able to meet in the auditoriumg Miss Lacoste was the guiding spirit in promoting student govern- ment. She promoted all student activ'ities-pag- eants. court plantings. parties for parents and stu- dents. acted as adviser of The Lowell and encouraged many other activities that made Lowell Lowell. To the gracious lady who served our school for twenty-eight years---to Miss Eugenie Lacoste. whose motto was.
