We can compare our work through our four years to a football team inside the ten- yard line with first clown, goal to go. Our Freshman year is our first down. It is important for us to get off to a good start because the closer we get to the goal the harder the going is. So we must do well at this time. Our next two years are our next two downs. Some of us have left the scene and others have joined us and we are now preparing for our last big push to our goal. On fourth down, our Senior year, we attain our goal, graduation. It is the culmination of four long years. Some of us will be going on to more school and others will settle down to life, in search of more goals to at- falfl. Author -. The action began when Miss Sarah Pepperdine decided to take a trip to the Holy Land. After she left to catch the boat, her nephew, Peter Pepperdine, and his friend, Bill Bradshaw, whom Miss Pep- perdine dislikes very much, decided to rent her house. Upon renting the house to the Clarkstons, a social climber and her two daughters, Miss Pepper- dine suddenly became afraid of the water and called Peter and told him that she was returning home very soon. In order to get the Clarkstons out of the house he told jasmine, the darky cook, to tell them that the house was haunted. But in order to make jasmine believe this the two boys had to just about scare her to death. The climax came when Miss Pepperdine returned and found the Clarkstons still occupying her home. Schroeder 7mm Hercules Nelson and his bosom pal, Wilbur Maxwell, come to spend the week end with Hercules' aunt and uncle. Hercules knows his uncle has taken a new job, but he doesn't know until too late that his uncle is a mortician. The boys are terrified, and decide to head for home, when another guest appears. The guest is jason Quigley, who ran out of gas, and the funeral is to be held Monday. Wilbur spots Celeste, Hercules' cousin, and decides to stay. Mr. Quigley turns out to be quite alive. He thinks someone tried to do away with him, so a plan is evolved: He'd make his family think he was dead, then show up at his own funeral and trap the guilty party. Herc's for leaving, until he sees Nina, the deceased's granddaughter, and he decides to stay. No doubt Mr. Quigley's plan was good, but when Wilbur and Hercules set out no solve the case, 'matters go from worse to terrible. Hercules tips off Nina that her grandpop's alive and Uncle Bob, being impli- cated, is mistakenly carted off to the klink. The boys finally come face to face with the culprit, after first getting everyone out of the house who could help them, and finally es- cape with their necks, -but not before one of the wildest finishes ever. Losing their opener to Monroe by a score of 32 to 7, Mr. Bob Butler and Mr. John Hepner offered their assistance to Mr. James Carmichael and Mr. Lyle Carter, and before long the team began to shape, winningtheir next contest over Siletz, who later were champions of their district. But still playing ragged ball the coach went back to work on the backfield starts and the linemen's blocking. The next time the Red Devils got a chance to show their ability was a game with Pleasant Hill, which ended in a 13-13 deadlock, with P. H. scoring their last touchdown off Lowell's Freshmen. From Pleasant Hill the team moved to Springfield for a scrim- mage with the Springfield J. V.'s, losing by one touchdown. Then the work started. The Red Devils were faced with some very fine competition, the first being Sutherlin, an A school, who won by a score of 25-0. ln a sea of mud and rain Oakland came next to beat the Devils by a score of 12-6, although the Red Devils scored two touchdowns that were called back due to penalties. The next disappointment came when the Red Devils played one of the standout teams of the state, Bandon. The Devils played fine ball this game but lost to this superior club by a score of 33-7. Getting ready for the biggest game of the year the Red Devils moved to Cottage Grove to brush up on their offense against Cottage Grove J. V. Lowell came out on top by a score of 40-26. All fired up for the game that meant the district championship, the Red Devils moved to junction City to meet Monroe, who were highly favored over the underdog Red Devils. The game ended with Monroe scoring only one touch- down. For the first time this season this fine offensive club was held to one score, the final score being, Monroe, 7 - Lowell, 0. Coach Lyle Carter's ranging Red Devils, showing superior defense, tied Coburg in the B-League race for a co-championship trophy with 11 wins and 5 loss- es. Siletz, Halsey, Monroe and our own Red Devils were the contestants in the annual Christmas Holiday tournament, with the Devils obtaining first place, Halsey, secondg Monroe taking thirdg and Siletz bringing up fourth. At the close of league play, the B-League tournament at' McArthur Court was held with Lowell waxing Coburg for an easy B-League title, Lowell's fifth county crown. Going into District play, Lowell lost to Harrisburg, State basketball champions, but went on to beat Siletz for consolation honors thus winding up a season of spectacular playing under the bril- liant coaching of Lyle Carter, who has presented Lowell High with a team of the highest stand- ing in the school history. B-League tournament all-stars chosen from Lowell were Arlie Brown, center, and Richard Scheibner, forward. District All-Stars chosen from Lowell were Arlie Brown, Richard Scheibner and Ronald Matheny. Brown, a man of stature, found no equal in B-League competition, enabling him to score 297 points this year. Scheibner, a cool, fast-thinking player, helped his team im- measurably offensively and defensively in season and tournament play. Ronald Matheny, Low- ell's second highest scorer, with 178 points, possessing unlimited ability, is a junior, with one year of eligibility remaining. A- BROWN R. SCHEIBNER R. ERICKSON R. MATHENY B. Four students, of whom three were juniors, went to State last year. They were Bunny Rice, 100-yard dashg Ron Matheny, pole vaultg and Neil Adkins, 440. Richard Scheibner was the Senior who went last year to run the mile and Arlie Brown attended State two years ago and ran the high hurdles. Other well-proven track men are Dale Moon, Sophomore, who ran the mile, and Richard Erick- son, Senior, in the shot put event. Lowell's relay team has had no equal so far this year. It is consisted of Neil Adkins, Arlie Brown, Ralph Burton, and Bunny Rice. VOLLEYB LL Lowell's Red Devils started off with a bang this year and kept it up clear through the sea- son. Winning their first eight games they were still undaunted after losing to Mohawk and came back to win two more, losing only once more to Coburg in their last game before the tournament with Mapleton. By losing only two games they were at the top of the league in Eastern Lane County, and they were to play Mapleton, champs in Western Lane County. Their hearts were full of hope as they left school the evening of Feb. 24 for Willamette High School, the place of their championship game with Mapleton. They returned defeated but undaunted and have great hopes of winning it next year. Pat Young was elected by unanimous vote for honorary captain for the year and Marilyn Moore was co-captain. - Five of the girls were initiated into Lettergirls' Club for earning their letter this year.
