CLASSES lUDS 86 P.A,C. SPIRIT 130 r- j Class was the most apt word to describe the seniors of 1979, as they complied an un- forgetable record at Lowell. Freshman class president Gloria Guiterrez began their first year by sponsoring many fund raisers and being in charge of the Top 100 Banquet. Kelly Starbuck, carried on Gloria ' s work by contributing various good ideas to improve student government in their Sophomore year. With the help of the other ju- nior class officers, last year ' s president John Roberts orga- nized a very successful Junior- Senior Prom held at the Am- bassador Hotel. Lance Geiger, senior class president, had his hands full with planning the Grad Nite held in Palm Springs on Mt. San Ja- cinto. Lance and his cabinet sponsored a car wash and sev- eral other activities to raise money for this main event. As the senior gift, the Class of 1979 helped the annual staff pay for the entire Senior Section printed in full color. SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT (top): Lance Geiger. Sponsoring the Big and Little Sister Tea was the opening event of Girls ' League Activities for this year. The purpose of this well attended event was to welcome the freshmen girls to Lowell. The fall fund raiser was the selling of Carmel Corn, a first for Girls ' League, replacing the traditional Candy Apple sale. Christmas found Girls ' League promoting Sees ' Candy Canes to add holiday cheer to the campus. After the New Year, two mem- bers of Girls ' League, Cathy Al- lor and Karen Zisko, undertook the task of selling and deliv- ering carnations. Exotic Lion Country Safari was the site selected for this year ' s Girls ' League Dance held on February 17, with the theme of An Evening in Paradise. Dad Date Night gave fathers and daughters a chance to have an evening out together includ- ing dinner and planned activi- ties. June brought the closing of each board member ' s term, and elections were held to select new officers for the upcoming year of 1979- ' 80. Exotic Lion Country Safari was the chosen site for this year ' s Girls ' League Dance, held on February 17 with the theme, An Evening In Para- dise. The setting was a beau- tiful and romantic one, with paths and walkways intertwin- ing among ponds and lakes out- side of the main ballroom. Ace was the band playing for the occasion enchanting couples for over three hours with their music. The Girl ' s League Dance is the main event of the year for the girls on the board, and a major portion of the first part of the year was spent planning and organizing it. Many fund raisers and activi- ties were scheduled to raise money for the dance. The Major ones were the carmel corn, candy cane, and carnation sales that brought in the neces- sary funds needed to sponsor the dance. A major decision was to print the entire se- nior section in full color; this was a first for Lowell High school. The innovative theme cho- sen was Patriot Fever which lent itself to contemporary layouts and colorful treatment throughout the book. The seventeen staff mem- bers worked under the direction of Fay Sunada to produce a quality yearbook. In recognition of the staff ' s ideas, Herff Jones honored the Minuteman with Cover of the Month award. A wall plaque was presented to the school in the spring. The outlook for the sea- son did not improve as Espe- ranza shut out the varsity 21-0 and Sonora edged the Pats 19- 14. A 14-7 upset over crosstown rival La Habra helped to raise the Pats ' spirits. Advancing to the Quarter- finals of the CIF Playoffs high- lighted an already outstanding season. Two wins in CIF gave the Patriots the recognition of being the only team to ever do this in school history in any sport. Only a two point loss to Sunny Hills kept them from go- ing to the semifinals. Gary Heil, a four year Varsity starter, capped a fine career at Lowell by breaking eight school records this season to add to his one from last year. Heil was recognized as the Orange County Most Valuable Player, Orange League MVP, and was selected for the All-CIF team. Another individual standout was Ross Alger who was selected to the first team All-League. Steve Doane and Tom Forgette were both honorable mentions for the All-League team. Bringing further distinction to the team were the many honors earned by Coach Barry Gottula in his sixth year as head basket- ball coach. With the new and more competitive league the teams were in, the coaches discovered they needed to train the athletes even harder. They had to per- fect the skills of their teams to surpass those of the other teams. This achievement came through long hours of working with and encouraging each indi- vidual on the playing field. There were times of dis- couragement, but the times of success overpowered them. A special type of skill was needed by each coach. That skill was knowing how to cope with the demands of all the ath- letes, and at the same time han- dling each team with ease. COACHES (Top) Miss Davidson, Miss Free. The girls were elected by ballot last year for their position on the board this year. A few outstanding players who reinforced the team were Paula Dolberg, Suzanne Elliott and Danelle Hottle. Suzanne ' s and Danelle ' s skill enabled them to achieve the Patriot of the Month award. J.V. Tennis also had an awarding season. They tied for third with an excellent record of 6-8. Maya Blackman and Tawna Trueman boosted the J.V. ' s with their fine tennis ability. This year ' s Varsity Basketball Team came up short on wins with a sixth place league finish- ing. Their overall record of 7-13 was discouraging. With only three of those wins counting for the league record, their stand- ings dwindled downward. Although height was a major disadvantage for the Patriots, their shortness and speed al- lowed them in a few games to squeeze under their opponents and out-hustle them on the court. Varsity Coach Waldman commented, They played a lot of great games and showed a lot of potential when they wanted to play. Some promising players for the team, also receiving Patriot of the Month awards, were Oebby Garcia and Marianne Fiely. Sophomore Joan Harvey was one of the team ' s high scorers, and she displayed her ability during all games. Julie Vaughn also helped the team tremendously and therefore, was voted Most Valuable by her teammates. Even better things are ex- pected from the team next year, as they will be losing only one senior, Janet DiPietro. Coach Koehler remarked, The girls did an outstanding job this year considering the number of freshman girls on the team. One of their more crucial games was against Esperanza. With one minute left to play in the game, the team was trailing by five points. A free throw, steal for the basket, and a forty foot long shot tied the game; the Patriots went on to win 42-37. They were Laura May and co- captains Brenda Milburn and Carole Scheel. The rest of the team consisted of eight return- ing J.V. ' s and two first year players. Ms. Marlene Free and Ms. Dana Davidson, the new field hockey coaches, taught the girls excellent skills which helped them place third in the Orange League. With an overall record of 7-1-4, the Patriots scored a total of 28 goals, 20 of those during league play. Since three teams were al- lowed to advance to CIF, Lowell was honored to go as the third team. For the first round of CIF, Lowell traveled to Saddleback. After a 0-0 score at the end of H the game, both teams went into an overtime flick off. Lowell broke the tie and went 5-3 win- ners. Huntington Beach was Lowell ' s second opposition. The Patriot ' s precise teamwork and competence assisted them in holding their defending team scoreless at halftlme, but lost two goals in the remaining half. Players chosen for the Or- ange League Team were Laura May and Annette Mestaz with Debi Houston receiving honor- able mention. Many of the girls had to double or triple the number of races L they swam for the team to have a sufficient quantity of swim- mers in each race. Sally Morris, sole diver, usually lifted the team ' s score with her first place performances.
