Right: Mark Bartz takes a breather. 12 CROSS COUNTRY Cross country is a lonely sport, with no glamorous re¬ wards, that takes a great deal of individual effort to succeed. Our Lowell runners are espe¬ cially aware of this as they ended their season with one win, eight losses and placed last in conference. Senior Mark Bartz led the team, and Kelly Pierce was awarded most im¬ proved runner. Coach Dan Martin, who is new to the sport himself, has a great deal of confidence in next season. Row 1: C. Statistically disappointing, the boys went far on the individ¬ ual level. Sectional qualifiers in¬ cluded 3 seniors, 3 juniors, and 4 sophomores. Moving on to Re¬ gional were Mark Wietbrock in pole vaulting and Mark Langen for the 100 yard dash. Keeping the morale up were seniors Don Peddy, Chester Bunkowfst, Greg Duncan, Chuck Sharkey, Mark Bartz, and Mark Wietbrock. She stressed the fundamentals for a base to add to in future years. Returning seniors were: All-Con¬ ference player Tammy Cox. Piper Spry and Linda Johnson. Five of the six varsity players were soph¬ omores. and Coach Pantos is hop¬ ing for individual improvements as well as an overall boost in team play. Above left: Cathy Roy meets the ball. Adding their expe¬ rience were Seniors Becky Zu- nica, Kathy Fry The girls’ track team finished with a 6-8 season of building and improvement. Adding their expe¬ rience were seniors, Becky Zu- nica, Kathy Fry, Piper Spry, Nancy Yankauskas, Mindy Allie, and Veslie Venditti. There were records broken in the mile, long jump, softball throw, 400 run, and 880 medly relay, while six team¬ mates qualified for sectionals in nine different events. New to Lowell was Coach Susan Pantos. She believes the girls began to re¬ alize that track is a sport in which one works to satisfy the inner self. Yan- 19 LOWELL’S DEVILFISH Year round practice and dedi¬ cation are strong factors in build¬ ing a successful swimming team. Building is just what Coach Ron Coghill has been doing for the past few years that he has coached the Devilfish, improving the team each year. This past sea¬ son has been especially fulfilling for the underclassmen, Mike Ar- tim, John Bochstahler, Doug Coo¬ per and Chuck Sharkey. All set a record on the 400 Free Relay. Back stroker, Doug Cooper was Lowell ' s lone finalist in Section¬ als and was named outstanding swimmer. Despite a 6-7 season. Being in an individ¬ ual sport, the swimmer can de¬ pend only on herself for suc¬ cess and blame only herself for failure. Lowell should be very proud of the girls’ team, for in the past 6 years we have sent an average of 4 girls to state com¬ petition. The team received some badly needed equipment and was able to prac¬ tice in the new gym instead of traveling to Lake Prairie for prac¬ tice. The girls had a full optional team for the very first time. This enabled the entire team to com¬ pete evenly against its opponents. BASEBALL Coach Dermody said, We had a fine season, 16-12-1, anytime you have a winning season it’s good.” The only returning varsity pitcher was Jeff Smith. Smith fin¬ ished the season with a record of 7-3. Another senior pitcher was Dan Wlenklenski, who finished the season with a record of 6-4-1. Other outstanding members were: Rusty Bruce, a good short stop and hitter, John O’Drobinak, hit¬ ting over 400. Jim O’Drobinak tied the school record of home runs in one season (6). Allie, 27 Highlighting the season for the Girls ' Basketball was victory in the first Lowell Tournament. They edged out Andrean by 3 points in overtime, in the final game. Two time All-Conference player, Becky Zunica, was also voted Varsity’. Most Valuable Player while Ly. da Greiner was Channel 50’s runr. -r-up player of the week. Leading ine way in sta¬ tistics was Kathy Fry and for the J.V., Susan Bedoian who also won the MVP Award. The teams finished 6-9 Varsity and 4-8 J.V. but showed much in¬ dividual improvement. Coach Becky Ainsworth, from Lowell Middle School, is very optimistic about next year, although she ad¬ mits the team will surely miss the seniors ’ experience. The team was very young, and included only two seniors, Dan Wieklinski and Art Kasparian. There was much individual improvement throughout the year, developing a good attitude and strength in the underclassmen. Coach Cameron is expecting an intensive season, as well as added power, in the boys’ next season and the future. This year Pete Weiand and Steve Korte were voted MVP. GIRL’S TENNIS The third year of the girls’ ten¬ nis team showed a great deal of improvement and growth in skill and team dedication. In tennis, a very individualized sport, the ath¬ lete must have a high level of self- discipline and determination. This year’s team has shown these characteristics above and beyond any requirements set by the coach. Also, being a very young team, the future of the girls’ team will be one of success and indi¬ vidual fulfillment. The team members can be proud of their overall accom¬ plishments for they have worked together, proven thier dedication to themselves, and this year’s team has shown the highest level of tennis. Although 4th in confer¬ ence, Mike Bedoian and Steve Korte made the all Conference team, and the school record was broken with a 147. Mike was also awarded with the John Alkire Award for Golf given by our school. With only two seniors, Jon Oppenhuis, and Art Kasparian, the team and Coach Bill Berger are looking forward to next year with a multitude of outstanding lettermen returning. GIRLS’ GOLF Striking out on its own for the first time ever, the brand new Girls’ Varsity Golf team achieved a perfect 5-0 record. The team hit its peak in win¬ ning the ' 76 La Porte In¬ vitational, defeating ten other teams on the grueling golf course. Its victims included eventual sectional winner La Porte and top ranked Valpo- raiso. The teams biggest fan and loyalist supporter was Coach Wilma Hardesty, former gymnastic mentor, who helped steady her young squad. De¬ spite a somewhat disappoint¬ ing sixth place finish in sec¬ tional play after its outstanding season, the girls have nothing but high hopes for next year. FRESHMEN BASKETBALL FRESHMEN —The freshmen won the holiday tourney for the second year in a row. They have a new coach, Bill Berger. VARSITY BASKETBALL VARSITY—This year the Dev¬ ils’ won the holiday tourney. Also they defeated Hebron for the first time in many years. WRESTLING Under the able direction of Coach Cammeron, the Freshmen Wrestling team made gigantic strides. T. Johnson, B. Franklin, and J. Boyles were all winners in the Conference Tourney. Fresh¬ men could be found wrestling at all levels, and they demonstrated their progress by earning top placement in several tourneys. The J.V. not to be out-done put in one of its best seasons, with Coach Vandenbemden at the helm. The team earned a 4th place in the Portage tourney. Trying a new approach, which added to the excitement, they often waited until the last possible moment to pull the team through to victory. The “Grapplers” came in fourth in the Crown Point section¬ als, and if the indications from the Freshmen and J.V. teams are true measure, the school has many good years of wrestling to look forward to. The losses were not one-sided defeats, but de¬ feats by numbers. The team was admirably led by George Bravos, who was voted Most Valuable Freshmen Player. But, all is not lost for the 1976 season. Among the players sev¬ eral excelled: Chuck Sharkey- Most Valuable player, Randy Hansen and Jim Wagner—Of¬ fensive Linemen of the Year, and Mike Blissmer—Defensive Lineman of the Year. JR. VARS TY: The J.V. team performed very well as a team. The members encouraged each other and improved their play as the season progressed. Karen’s es¬ cort for the evening was Jim Steuer. The Freshmen won the traditional spirit stick, and the sophomores received a first place in float competition. The “rock” concert featured a group called “The Sunshine Ex¬ press.” The group generated much enthusiasm within the stu¬ dent body. At times the teachers were even seen enjoying them¬ selves. The second, consisted of Careers Day. On this occassion, students attended lectures of their choice that were given by profes¬ sionals in that particular field of endeavor. Above: Feeling the music. Though the group did not play to a full house, the play was defi¬ nitely a success. The play dealt with a young man trying to get ahead in the world, and it con¬ tained humorous overtones. The lead was played by Mike Ford; costarring were fellow seniors Ja¬ net Hoover, Shari Sharkey, John Rust, and Fred Aim plus a great supporting cast. The ju¬ nior class held the prom in the Multi-Purpose area, thus spend¬ ing their money and time on dec¬ orations. The group was ‘‘Bon¬ fire and an interesting sideshow was the collage of pictures (do¬ nated by yearbook) arranged on the wall of various members of the junior and senior classes. The turnout was larger than had been expected and included many midterm grads. After eating (pot- luck style) the senior members honored the “Hall of Fame” se¬ niors, then each individual mem¬ ber received an award for belong¬ ing to the class. The seniors also honored Mr. and Mrs. Ku- ruzovich, Mr. and Mrs. Drukemil- ler, Mr. and Mrs. Schuster, and the senior class sponsors. Mr. Drukemiller concluded his speech warning that school will be held on Monday (planned ditch day). After the speeches, a dance was held for the seniors in the Multi-Purpose Room. Left Page. As promi sed the 1977 com¬ mencement exercises began promptly at 2:00 p.m. on May 22. As the class marched in, the band played the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance.” Clad in red and white gowns the graduates took their seats in front of a full house of family and friends. Speeches were given by fellow classmates, Laurie Buche, Shari Sharkey, and Violet Trbojevic. Following the speeches, the moment arrived ev¬ eryone had waited for—the pre¬ sentation of the diplomas. Mr. Gary Drukemiller presented the diplomas assisted by Mr. John Ku- ruzovich and Joyce Kramer. In unison the seniors were then al¬ lowed to place their tassels to the right side. But, as the year progressed, we lost sight of our goals, and turned to a new style. Simplicity. The Lowellian 1977 was printed in Montgomery, Alabama on 80 pound Ermine paper. A focal point layout was followed. The contained one pica inner margins, and outer margins that varied. Staff members changed with the tide. For those who hung in there with me.
