Lowellian Lowell High School Lowell, Indiana Organizations 48 Faculty and 38 Administration Academics School Life 3 26 — Advertisements 15 Underclassmen Seniors 98 Sports 72 130 Contents fable In the throne room Queen Gloriana discusses mat¬ ters of state with her ministers, Dennis Broe and Rich Pace, while Trudy Lawyer and Betty Fedler wait in attendance. The senior play was presented in November, 1964. This play is a sa¬ tire on the political blundering of countries in our time. A small country, Grand Fenwick, captures a super bomb by declaring war on the United States, and, after steal¬ ing this bomb, Grand Fenwick tells the great powers of the world there must be peace. Besides this, the Fenwickians have beaten the U. S. in war, and as reparations the United States must pay $1, 000, 000. The play was presented to the student body and two night audiences, by whom it was uproariously received. But, as always, it appears that the cast and crew enjoyed producing the play as much as the audience enjoyed watching. The Archers Daryl Fraley and Bill Rouse display excellent bowmanship. Seniors Present Female tourists, Pat Collins, Peggy Harder, Joan Ellis, and Linda Parks, wait while Tom Pancini as chief ranger gains his composure. The brilliant Professor (Sid Van Horn) Kokintz contemplates the formula for his discovery, the 2-bomb, a super weapon. At the Royal Palace, Queen Gloriana, portrayed by Snooke Rieke, inspects the superbomb brought back from New York by Tully Bascom and victorious army of three. The Mouse That Roared” The make-up crew did their best as is seen in this picture. Everyone seems quite impressed by the modern weaponry used by the glorious army of Grand Fen¬ wick. However, the feeling is not shared by General (Frank Far¬ rell) Snippit of the U. S. Army. Glorianna the Twelfth . . Daryl Fraley Student Directors Homecoming Week On Monday of the Homecoming Week festivities, Jim Gleason, Laurence Ketelaar, Pete Kasper, and Linda Lyons start the week off right by parti¬ cipating in Sweatshirt Day. Jane Skinner, Bob Hatch, and Pat McCloskey don their sweaters on Class Sweater Day. Freshman Dan Casarez wears his green shirt. Sign Day brightened up the lockers Tuesday and also helped to boost the school spirit of the student body and the football squad. Brenda Cavinder, Ramona Basham, Ronnie Wilson, and Harvey Cook participate on dress-up day. Two Little Devils, Marlene Mager and Kathy Yurgilas, throw the Dyer Indian into the DEVIL ' S RED HOT FIRE. Homecoming Week this year was filled with activities from Monday through Friday. Sponsored by the Student Council, the week included the special events of Sweatshirt Day, Sign Day, Class Sweater Day, Dress-up Day, and Color Day. The week was climaxed with a pep session on the football field on Friday afternoon before the game. On the brisk afternoon of Homecoming, the student body ambles toward the football field for a warm-up pep session with hopes of a Devil victory. Homecoming ’64 The Red Devil football team provided a completely successful Homecoming by defeating the Dyer Indians 7-0 in the last 50 seconds. The first half was a defensive battle, and the teams went to the locker room knotted at 0-0. During halftime ceremonies Jamie Van Deursen was crowned Homecoming Queen, 1964. The second half remained scoreless until Rich Pace intercepted a Dyer pass. Chuck Laumeyer completed four passes, the last to Johnny Wilson for a touchdown. After the game, the Homecoming festivities sponsored by the Student Council. •! The Lowell High School Cadets form a heart around the 1964 Homecoming Queen and Court and their escorts who are Dennis Perzo and Julie Seramur, Benny Ruley and Lynn Cox, Gary Nomanson and Sandi Orr, Allen Dockweiler and Jamie Van Deursen, Sue Cox and Ray Szarmach, Sue Campbell and Travis Pressley, Linda Slankard and Mike Trueblood, and Judy Nord and John Cox. Julie Seramur, junior varsity cheerleader, shows her enthusiasm at the 1964 Home¬ coming game. Sue Cox, member of the Queen ' s Court, dances with her escort Ray Szarmach at the Homecoming Dance following the game. Rich Pace intercepts the pass which led to the game-winning touchdown. White Christmas Couples rest between dances while Bill gazes longingly at the punch bowl across the floor! The chaperones sat by and watched for a time, but the beat of the music soon beckoned them onto the dance floor. If a girl spent too long powdering her nose, she would return to find she had lost her partner to--the punch bowl! We could have danced all night and still have begged for more. Christmas Semi-Formal The Christmas Semi-Formal was well-attended by forty couples this year. The White Christmas dance was held in the After-4 Club at Great Oaks. Those who went to this dance will have fond memories of this, one of the big dances of the school year. The Student Council is to be commended in making this a very delightful evening for all. Chaperones for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Langen, Mr. and Mrs. Felder, Mr. and Mrs. Huff, Mr. Guilford, Mr. Colson, and Mr. Braun. The Johnny Baker Combo provided the music. Junior-Senior Prom PROM KING AND QUEEN Rosemary Valois and Jim Langen The Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Sherwood Club again this year. This year ' s theme was Stairway to the Stars. Couples danced to the music of the Johnny Nowlan Or¬ chestra. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen, Jim Langen and Rosemary Valois. Chaperones and stu¬ dents alike enjoyed this big event of the year. Wes Hildebrandt, Student Council Presi¬ dent for 1966, crowns Rosemary Valois queen. Linda Slankard, Secretary of the Junior Class, crowns Jim Langen king. PROM COURT Allen Dockweiler and Jamie Van Deursen second runner-up. King Jim and Queen Rosemary, Joyce Eaker and Jim Peterson first runner-up. The Prom, an extra special event in the life of Lowell High juniors and sen¬ iors, is as beautiful as a ball in one of Grimm ' s fairy tales. The magic night induces some couples to build their own Stairway to the Stars. OKLAHOMA! Starring Linda Poer, Daryl Fraley, Gayle Schoon, Allen Dockweiler, George Miller, and Linda Slankard The proud cast of Oklahoma! Did someone lose her bloomers ? Joe Gibson (drums), Andy Amey (string bass), and Mary Ellen Bruce and Ruthann Branham (piano) did a fine job as accom¬ panists for this production. The musical operetta Oklahoma! deals with the lives of some of the in¬ habitants before Oklahoma became a state. Laurey Williams, who lives on a farm with her Aunt Eller, is as much in love with Curly McLain as he is with her, but neither will admit it to the other. A friend of Laurey ' s, Ado Annie, is in love with the male species in general, and peddler Ali Hakim and cowboy Will Parker in particular. Her father Andrew Carnes finally has to let Will have her hand when Ali leaves. Jealousy finally brings Laurey and Curly together. Curly is jealous of Jud Fry, a hired hand on Aunt Eller ' s farm, while Laurey is green- eyed over Gertie Cummins, who is famous for her shrill, irritating laughter. Laurey and Curly are married, and to everyone ' s surprise, Ali marries Gertie. Everything is looking fine until Jud Fry comes to the wedding party drunk and goes after Curly with a knife. Curly has to kill him in self-defense. Finally everything is straightened out, and everyone lives happily ever after. The story, told with the benefit of music and dancing, beautiful costumes and an excellent set, was a real delight to the audience. Mothers’ Tea The Cinderella background sets the stage as Anita Rupar crowns the 1965 May Queen, Diane Roberts, while flower girl Shelley Govert looks on in anticipation. Seated on either side of Diane is her court. From left to right they are: Kris Copelin, Sue Campbell, Bonnie Woodburn, Jean Hayden, Virginia Perfetti, and Rosemary Valois. 18 ROSEMARY VALOIS BONNIE WOODBURN May Queen and Court QUEEN DIANE ROBERTS VIRGINIA PERFETTI SUE CAMPBELL KRIS COPE UN 19 Cinderella ' s ball is re-enacted at the Mothers ' Tea as Prince Charming Dave Clinton greets his many guests. Janice Pendowski’s contribution to Cinderella ' s ward¬ robe consisted of a two-piece cotton sports suit ac¬ cented by a white dickey and white, gym shoes. 20 At the Senior Achievement Banquet Mr. Stuart welcomed the twenty-fivo honored seniors and their parents. The honored seniors and their guests en¬ joyed a delicious meal prepared by the ladies of the Methodist Church. It is a comedy in three acts written by David Rogers. Con¬ fusion was everywhere in the office of Debutante Magazine when the young, inex- perienced sub-deb editors came to New York. Mrs. Woodruff, the editor-in-chief of Debutante, worked hard to keep her green sub-debs out of trouble and on their jobs. But complications occurred when a certain Southern belle won the hearts of all the men in her sight. However, after the annual party, things settled down to normal, and this issue finally did get to press. This play was well done by the class of ' 66. Here ' s a hello to all you POTATO DIGGERS. It Happens Every With a sigh of relief. Editor-in-chief Cynthia Ogle holds a farewell party for her sub-deb reporters. Van Jump, hat in hand, is ready to leave with the girls. Summer” Gloria Pace (as Flippy) certainly thinks Andy. Amey (as Pudgy) is something. Cynthia Ogle as Lucy Jennings Woodruff gives Van Jump as Tod Colbert that motherly advice. The participants in Lowell ' s 1965 Junior Miss Pageant were (left to right) Ruthann Branham, Susan Campbell, Susan Cox, Carol Larson, and Trudy Lawyer. Junior Miss Pageant Sue models an outfit she made for the fine arts category. The crowning of the Junior Miss, Susan Cox, was the climax of the evening. Placing the crown on her head is James Purkey, president of the Lowell Jaycees. The second annual Junior Miss Pageant sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce was held December 17 1964. Five senior girls were judged in these categories: fine arts, scholarship, poise and appearance, and physical fitness. Each girl was interviewed by the judges for five minutes. This was also considered in the ratings. The girls attended a luncheon with the judges before the pageant. Each girl took a great deal of her time in preparation for the pageant. The time was not wasted because each girl gained something from the experience. The girls were presented with silver charm bracelets with the Junior Miss charm. 24 HONOR SOCIETY INITIATES: Row 1: P. Anita Rupar, President ol the Society, names the purposes of the ideals of the Society: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. w in Academics These are a few familiar Lowell High students caught in a rare moment of seriousness. Why are all these faces so serious? Can we tell what they are thinking by their expressions? Perhaps they are thinking over a difficult question, trying to dream up a good answer, or they may be debating the question with their teacher. Possibly they are worried over a tough exam coming up next period. These were certainly familiar expressions seen on every face during the school year. Senior Awards Night Mr. Braun presents Elsie Govert with a gavel in appreciation for her hard work and dedication as president of the Student Council. Ray Dirindin and Rich Pace tied for the coveted All-Sports Award. The award was presented by Mr. Guilford. Mr. Niemeyer of the Lowell VFW pre¬ sented the VFW Essay Awards to Connie Hile($100 Bond), Anita Rupar($75 Bond), Rosemary Valois($50 Bond), and Ron Wilson ($25 Bond). 28 These are the top ten per cent of the Senior class. Each one was awarded an honor student pin by Mr. Guilford. The students are the following in order of rank in the class: Anita Rupar, Laura Thomason, Richard Hulsey, Erlene Wernes, Richard Cumberlin, Jane Skinner, Elsie Govert, Mary Ellen Bruce, Chris Gunnerson, Linda Poer, Kris Copelin, Rosemary Valois, Peggy Chambers, Donna Bales, Gayle Schoon, Sue Cox, Rich Pace, Shirley Joyce, Nancy Lach, and Daryl Fraley. Mrs. Stewart happi¬ ly presents Donna Bales with the Home Economics Award. Mr. Little commended Don Hartman, Bill Lain, and Rich Hulsey in their outstanding work in the F. F. A. 29 Daryl Fraley proudly received his Oscar, the Jo Ann Wor¬ ley Award for the best Thespian, from Mr. Martin. Erlene Wernes, Anita Rupar, and Chris Gun- nerson receive medals and thanks from Mrs. Shafer for their hard work and their contri¬ butions to the Lowellette and Lowellian. A surprise award for the best staff member in publi¬ cations was presented to Anita by Mr. Arnold Coons of the Gary Post Tribune . 30 Boys’ State The Boys ' State Delegates from Lowell High were Roger Alexander, Van Jump, and Andy Amey. Roger was sponsored by the Cedar Lake American Legion and Van and Andy were sponsored by the Lowell American Legion. Hoosier Boys ' State and Hoosier Girls ' State, sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary respec¬ tively, are week-long programs planned to give select Indiana high school seniors an opportunity to learn more about their state government. The boys and girls ipend separate weeks on the beautiful Indiana University campus at Blooming¬ ton. At Hoosier Boys ' State, the boys will be engaged in classroom activities and lectures dealing with political science and government. Besides classroom work the Boys ' Stater can enjoy many sports from basketball to swimming. The girls at Hoosier Girls ' State live in mythical cities which are named after past state presidents of the American Legion Auxiliary. The Girls ' Staters will study Indiana government at city, county, and state levels. Each girl will run for an office at any level of government which she chooses. After election day, mock sessions of the Senate and House of Repre¬ sentatives are held. The week will be cli¬ maxed with an Honor Day on Sunday. Girls’ State The Lowell American Legion Auxiliary sponsored Linda Ruley and Kathy Yurgilas as Girls ' State Delegates from Lowell High. Linda Slankard was the Girls ' State Dele¬ gate sponsored by the Cedar Lake American Legion Auxiliary. 31 Music Department The academic program of Lowell High School is the real hub of the school. All other phases of school life branch from this. The Dance Band performs at a concert. The hands of talented pianist Ruthann Branham. Both vocal and instrumental music are important in the curriculum. Since daily class periods are devoted to a glee club and a choir as well as an eighty-five piece band, the top floor of the school sounds like a musi¬ cian ' s haven most of the time. In addition to formal class training, endless practice sessions and numerous lessons keep the department always emitting The Sound of Music. Andy Amey, John Gorball, and Vivian nale were All-State band members. Language Languages, both Latin and Spanish, are popular with LHS students. The Spanish department organized a club this year, which has as its purpose the fostering of interest in the Spanish language and the culture of Spanish¬ speaking peoples. The club had a gala Christmas party in the school cafeteria. The pinata made by Kathie Yurgilas was broken by blind-folded Mickey Roy, scattering the candy and toys in tradi¬ tional fashion. An-end-of-the-year picnic was enjoyed by this group also. Miss Lewis, Spanish Club sponsor, and Kathy Yurgilas admire the pinata which Kathy made. Industrial Arts The Industrial Arts department teaches boys many practical skills which will serve them well in their future lives. Welding, wood working, electricity, metals, and mechanical and architectural drawing are learning areas for boys enrolled in these classes. Business Department The Business Department is responsible for the training of many students who plan to get jobs directly after graduation. After thorough training in typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, office practice, and business arithmetic, the graduate is well qualified to accept employment in an office. But typing, at least, is essential for everyone, and practically every student takes this course sometime during his years at LHS. 34 Science Department Most freshmen at Lowell High are ini¬ tiated into high school science through the study of biology. Dissecting a frog seems to have more appeal for Philip Slaman and Lindell Richey than it does for Jean McClymont and Susan Vander- car. Besides biology, the science de¬ partment offers courses in general science, earth science, chemistry, and physics. Physical Education The physical education departments pre¬ sent a varied program designed to increase physical skills and enjoyment in living. The girls particularly enjoy volleyball and bad¬ minton and are somewhat less than enthu¬ siastic about calisthenics, but all are parts of a well-rounded whole curriculum. The boys enjoy a really active program includ¬ ing basketball, dodgeball, and wrestling as well as individual skill tests and other group sports. 35 Home Ec girls make cookies for the Mothers ' Tea. Girls enrolled in the Home Eco¬ nomics department have the oppor¬ tunity to learn home making in an ideal situation. Sewing and cooking are useful skills which are displayed at the pleasurable events of the Mothers ' Tea and the Valentine ' s Day party for mothers. In home ec classes girls learn good grooming, child care, home nursing, and social graces besides the cooking and sew¬ ing which are so important to the curriculum. Home Economics Shirley Hagle perfects her sewing skill in home ec class. An instructor and student from Hoosier Beauty College gave a demonstration on hair setting and tips on make-up. Home Ec Valentine Party Joyce Eaker proudly pinned a corsage on her mother. ' i 1 5 5pr I . y Pv 1 1 11® mVi.. Each person has the opportunity to be active in a club and share in its leadership. The acti¬ vities make school more exciting by spon¬ soring special events which are highlights of the year. Events such as the Student Coun¬ cil ' s Midwinter Semi-Formal and the choir ' s annual musical make the year more memor¬ able. Joining in the activities is a good way to have fun, meet new FACES, and become a more interesting, well-rounded person. SENIOR MEMBERS INDUCTED DURING THEIR JUNIOR YEAR Row 1: R. Cumberlin, R. Rupar National Honor Society The National Honor Society is an organization in which the members possess the qualities of character, scholarship, leadership, and service, the ideals of the Honor Society. To becpme eligible for membership in the Society, one must have a 3.4 cumulative average after five semesters in high school or a 3. 2 average after seven semesters. For the first time this year Lowell ' s Honor Society was privileged to have the opportunity to nominate a candidate for the Hall of Fame of Great Americans. The selection was William Mayo, chosen on the merits of his great contributions and leadership in the medical profession. The National Honor Society inducts new members into the organization in the spring of each year. The 1964-65 officers are President, Anita Rupar; Secretary-Treasurer, Laura Thomason; and Vice-president, Richard Cumberlin. The sponsor is Miss Baughman. r . i i L -£| ii Row 1: Mr. Braun, J. The purpose of the Council is to promote better relations between the students and faculty and between classes. During campaign week officers are chosen by the underclassmen, and each homeroom votes for its representative. These representatives take the students ' ideas, likes, and dislikes to the Council for discussion. In this way each student has an opportunity to participate in the government and activities of the school. Throughout the year the members of the Student Council are busy with various projects. They are in charge of homecoming week and homecoming night. The Christmas semi- formal dance is sponsored by the Student Council, and a Christmas drive is also held annually. This year an orientation committee was organized to introduce new students to their teachers and fellow students and to make them feel welcome at Lowell. The sponsor was Mr. Braun. The officers were Jan Roberts, secretary; Connie Hile, treasurer; Mike Trueblood, vice-president; Elsie Govert, president. Student Council The purpose of the Home Economics Club is to help its members learn more about homemaking. The club also tries to do some good throughout the year. At Christmastime the members took presents and fruit and candy to St. Anthony ' s Nursing Home. The club held a Valentine Party for the mothers and daughters, held a bake sale in April, and took a major portion in the planning and production of the annual Mothers ' Tea in May. Sunshine Club The beaming FACES of these Sunshine Club members were seen throughout the halls and classrooms of Lowell High this year. The sponsor was Mrs. Hetherington who did a very fine job. Members are chosen as freshmen, and their membership is for all their high school years. The main purpose of the Sunshine Club is to remember with cards and flowers those in school who have lost loved ones. The club was also engaged in many projects throughout the year. All the popcorn sold at the football and basketball games was popped by the Sunshine Club. Around Thanksgiving the club raffled off three turkeys. One of the proudest responsibilities was sponsoring an orphan Indian boy from Arizona. His name is Richard Lopez, and this was his second year as our adopted son. This year ' s officers are as follows: Sue Campbell, treasurer; Maurine Rieke, secretary; Joyce Eaker, vice-president; Gary Nomanson, president. National Thespian Society Students gain membership in the National Thespian Society by earning points through participation in the various dramatic activities throughout the year. A senior play, junior play, musical, and all-school show are usually held each year. Under the leadership of Mr. Martin, fine shows were presented to the public this year. Officers for the Thespians were Jamie VanDeursen, secretary; Connie Hile, treasurer; Laura Thomason, scribe; and Linda Mussman, president. Row 1: B. Prevo, F. Farrell, L. Foster, D. Bales, C. With the addition of boys as members of the Pep Club, it became the largest organization in the school. Flash cards were purchased this year and used during the basket¬ ball season. At the basketball sectional, a special flash card section performed at half-time. The officers and advisors formulated a constitution for the or¬ ganization, since it never naa one previously. The by-laws and cheer- leading regulations were included in this constitution. Pep Club The 1964-65 Pep Club officers were Jan Nassau, secretary; Anita Rupar, vice- president; Diane Roberts, president; and Joyce Eaker, treasurer. 56 The men of the L-Club represent a proud group. Possibly no other organization in the school requires such hard work, dedi¬ cation, determination, and sportsmanship for membership. The earning of a sweater is an outstanding achievement, and the jacket winner shows skill and dedication which only a few possess. When participating in various activities as basketball, volleyball, decx tennis, badminton, trampoline, cage ball, tumbling, tennis, and softball, the girls possess the three G.A.A. purposes of friendship, sportsmanship, and health. This year the G.A.A. participated in district track meets and telegraphic bowling meets, a gymnastics clinic, and several playdays. For the first time girls represented Lowell at the State G.A.A. Camp. Another innovation was the participation in the State Gymnastics meet. The G.A.A. held its first annual banquet at which time the initiation of new members and installation of new officers was held. Two senior girls, Jamie Van Deursen and Anita Rupar, became the first Lowell G.A.A. members to receive State G.A.A. Wall Plaques. FRESHMEN. Row 1: G. Roberts, B. Cavinder, C. Sark, J. Fleener, L. Choir The choir was very active this year. They performed before the student body at Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition, they took part in the spring concert and performed for the patients in Beatty Memorial Hospital. Their most energetic project was the produc¬ tion of Oklahoma! The choir was under the direction of Mr. Frederick. Gayle Schoon and Ruthann Branham were selected to sing with the Indiana All-State Choir. This chorus consisted of more than 100 students. 65 Girls’ Glee Club The Girls ' Glee Club was busy this year training for next year ' s choir. The girls, under the direction of Mr. Frederick, have worked very hard so that they can represent Lowell High School as one of the better singing groups in the area. Chris Gunnerson, editor of the LOWELLIAN, and Anita Rupar, editor of the LOWELLETTE, spent many long hours in putting together the yearbook and the paper. Both girls were honor students throughout high school and members of the National Honor Society. The sponsors of the LOWE LLIAN and LOWELLETTE, Mr. Miller, Mrs. Sha¬ fer, and Mr. Ham, deserve much credit and many thanks for boosting the publi¬ cations of Lowell High School. Our photographers Dick Fish, Larry Thwing, and Daryl Bruce, worked dili¬ gently processing pictures for the LOWELLIAN and LOWELLETTE. Scribblings The student committee; Jim Gudmundson, Jane Skinner, and Donna Heath, look over their printed selec¬ tions. Harvey Cook was absent when the picture was taken. f __ Erlene Weraes was entirely responsible for the typing and layout of the new publication, SCRIBBLINGS. The Publications department began a unique new project this year, SCRIBBLINGS, a book of the students ' own creative writing. Although other schools had tried such a book before, it was the first time for Lowell. A committee of four students, Harvey Cook, Donna Heath, Jim Gudmundson, and Jane Skinner, selected the material that was to go in the book from arti¬ cles that had previously been set aside by the English teachers. The book was sponsored by Mrs. Shafer. Including the illustrations and typing, it was entirely the work of the students. Although for a while money was scarce and there was some doubt if it would come out, it was successfully published at last, and wc had our first edition of SCRIBBLINGS. in Sports Long, hard hours of practice are put in by those participating in the many sports offered at Lowell. Among them are: foot¬ ball, cross-country, basketball, wrestling, track, golf, and baseball. The most out¬ standing sports event this year was wrestling in which our team won their sectional and eventually sent two boys to the state finals where they did very well. Even though the FACES of our teams are not always seen in the top spot, they have the solid backing of the student body and the spirit to keep trying. L. H. S. Cross-Country Team (Kneeling) M. The Red Devils finished with a 12-7 record, and placed seventh in the Calumet Conference meet and eighth out of nineteen teams in the sectional. Each member of the team and the manager received a varsity letter. Three boys also earned jackets. These were Mickey Roy and Ray Dirindin, each of whom has earned five major letters, and Dick Fish, who has managed seven seasons. Our Red Devil Harriers warm up before a victorious meet. Captain Joe Little leads Terry Hoffman and Mickey Roy over Lowell ' s two-mile course. Coach Todd requires everyone to be limbered up before running in a meet. Varsity Basketball The varsity showed a disappointing 3-17 record this year. The team opened with a victory at Morocco, followed by close games against state-ranked East Chicago Washington and Lafayette Central Catholic. However, the Devils did not win a game after Christmas vacation, closing their season by bowing to eventual winner Hammond in the sectional. Senior Ray Dirindin led the team in scoring and rebounding. Another senior, Mickey Roy, played well when given the opportunity. The JV ' s won three of their last four games to finish at 7 wins, 11 losses. They showed a lot of hustle and desire, and their outstanding players Dennis Shipley, Glen Llewellyn, Cliff Hooley, Mike Stokes and Dave Clinton will try for varsity berths next year. The Pep Club seems discouraged now, but spirit was excellent throughout the year. It must nave a Devil victory, judging from the expressions on the faces of managers Kip Gorball, Andy Amey, and Dick Fish as they figure up the statistics. 88 A Team L. to R. D. Sirois, T. BASEBALL The Red Devil baseball team achieved only a 5-9 rec¬ ord this year, but was not actually that bad, for four of the losses were by one run and two more by two runs. The Devils won their last two games over highly re¬ spected foes, defeating Gary Roosevelt, 7-4, and coming from behind three times to defeat Crown Point in extra innings, 4-3. Another highlight of the season was a 1-0 triumph over Chesterton in which Bill Jurs pitched a no¬ hitter. Rich Pace, our leading hitter and run- producer, takes a good cut against Grif¬ fith. Oh, these one-run games! Bob Pendoski snows us how to use an iron. This was the best year the golf team at Lowell High has ever seen. There were four return¬ ing lettermen: Larry Zander, Bob Anderson, Steve Grzych and Steve Beier. Larry Zander and Bob Anderson, both Seniors, were both consistently the two lowest scorers. Our team had a very respectable record with thirteen Steve Beier gets in a little practice. wins, nine losses and one tie. Our last match showed our teams great ability. Larry Zander broke the existing school record with a one under par 34. Also in our last match our team had a combined total of 157 to better another school record. Next year ' s team will have two fine up¬ coming golfers, both returning lettermen, Steve Beier and Bob Pendoski. Front row, 1. to r. - J. Taylor, D. Roberts, S. Beier, D. Iliff, S. Hile. Varsity Cheerleaders Gncerleaders Jamie VanDeursen, Marilyn Foster, Linda Slankard, and Mascot Paulette Thatcher, The 1964-65 cheerleaders did an excellent job as leaders of the enthusiastic students who were mem¬ bers of the Pep Club. These girls attended cheer¬ leading camp the previous summer, at which time they learned new cheers that they brought back to Lowell. They were mainly responsible for the organization of the float which appeared in the Labor Day Parade. At pep sessions held during school, the girls led the student body in cheers, which helped to build spirit and pep before games. These cheerleaders put forth extri effort at special events such as Homecoming, the Basketball Holiday Tour¬ nament, and the Basketball Sectionals. These are the many FACES of a senior. Today many of your relatives, friends and neighbors are working at the Indiana Harbor Works of Inland Steel in a wide variety of occupations providing steel that goes into bridges, buildings, refrigerators, ranges, farm machines, automobiles, tools, toys . . . into thousands of products that we use each day. Many are concentrating on certain phases of steelmaking by working in production departments. Some are gaining knowledge and experience in special trades through formal apprentice¬ ship programs offered in the following trades —Machinist, Patternmaking, Boilermaking, Welding, Shop Electrician, Wireman, Mason. Inland offers the high school graduate an excellent opportunity to further his education. Employees may participate in a variety of on-the-job training programs or the Purdue- Inland Training Program in which an employee may take a steelmaking, electrical or mechani¬ cal curriculum. Still others are continuing their formal education at one of the local ex¬ tension centers.
