This quotation, by Mr. Stuart, was contained in an editorial in the first issue of the Lowel- lette . This was an excellent start for a new year, new ad¬ ministration, partially new faculty, and a new freshman clas s. PEG ' S POST back!! Students and faculty, ’in to get into the routine of ities. ' ber 23, subscriptions STUDENTS and FACULTY: This is the year for EXCELLENCE at Lowell High. The band started our school year off on the right foot by placing high in the state contest at Indianapolis. The football and cross country team s are showing great improvement. This past summer many students have brought honor to the school and community. Many of the faculty members have attended summer school. Some have traveled ex¬ tensively during the summer. All of this will make for better students and tea¬ chers. This is just the beginning of an out¬ standing year. No school is any better than the individual stydent and teacher. At all times the individual should remember he is r e pre s e nti ng Lowell High School. What you do reflects on the whole school system. If you are suc¬ cessful we all bask in the glory; if you do something wrong we all get the blame. Everyone is expected to give his utmost t o make this the greatest year in the history of Lowell High School. Thomas I. Stuart Principal Hello there I hop his summer as muc Now it’s time for scl all the many activiti it. Blue Monday, and the freshmen ... op sophomores, every i_ you aren ' t quite sure .. talking about, take a litt sweaters. Pretty, huh? Last week I was casus down the hall to my clar before the bell was suddenly blind-’ ’ light. Eureki displaying his . Word of wari of hindering classes on tim rings in front The consensus that they really lik Lynn Cox just loves and things dly thing in this hi and be surprised gal holding hers Bobbetta Williai that she though, mean, really nea. classmen should ha, and from what I ' ve mi from them, (and belie ' ing comes easy!) pretty things loose in th The juniors have a ren about their rings The day was declared Color Day. All of the students don red and black outfits, making the Homecoming pep session, held on the football field, a colorful spectacular. Those studious typists dig into their enormous assign¬ ment that Mr. Ham has just given them. All chairs are filled except for one .... perhaps the occupant got a shock from his electric typewriter! Paul Russel grinds out gain in Devil ' s Homecoming tie with division champion Griffith. 6 In keeping with the Hootenanny craze, the Senior Class of ' 64 held one after the Chesterton football game. The Red Devils re¬ ceived excellent backing during the season. Excellence in school spirit is reflected in the large crowds at our sports events. Mr. Huff encourages excellence in participa¬ tion in all school activities in his ad¬ dress at the Homecoming pep session. 9 Coach Sheehan delivers one of his heated half¬ time rallies, firing up the Red Devils for the second half. The proud fathers have ring-side seats as they watch their sons on Dads ' Night. 10 Coaches Olsen and Clinton lead their Fighting Red Devils on to victory in the skit during the Homecoming pep session. | M. Mitchell scores winning TD in victory over the Panthers in the same skit. 11 The band and the pom-pom girls practice their routine for the up-coming Friday night football game. 12 Pep Band, including Mr. Minix, arouses the crowd at Homecoming pep session. And. . . . . . keeps right on play¬ ing, helping the cheer¬ leaders during the exciting battle. Nervous students await the arrival of Mr. Huff for his advice or con¬ sent in the outer room of his office. D. Heath, E. Govert, Mrs. Hetherington, L. Ruley, and J. Eaker count the thou¬ sands of Betty Crocker coupons on the way to a million, for a new activity bus. The GAA girls seem to have resorted to playing with two voileyballs. Is it really easier to volley two balls at one time ? Sheehan ' s Shiners buff the Intramural All-Stars in the Faculty-All-Star Game. Don ' t take it too hard, fellows — remember Dan Herbst, the official, has his apple to shine. The flag at half- mast. A symbol of our grief. As a nation we mourned the deaths of President John F. Kennedy and General Douglas MacArthur. As a community we mourned the tragic deaths of seven youths. Surely we can never forget two such great Americans. Just as surely we will never forget our classmates and friends. This memorial section of the 1964 LOWELL.LAN is in fond remem- brance of them. LLj L ! l | Gerry Griesmer James Austgen Mr. Stuart is seen looking over the plans for the addition to Lowell High. Still in the blue-print stage, the much-needed addition will be built on the land behind the now-standing high school. It will supply classrooms, including those specially equipped for study in the sciences, a new music room, a larger cafeteria, and a gym¬ nasium to be used for instruction in physical education. Located in the student com¬ mons will be the built-in trophy case presented to the school by this year ' s graduating class in memory of those students, their fellow-classmates, who were taken from their presence by death. Mr. Stuart closes the door on another school year. For seven years he served in the capacity of Assistant- Principal before becoming Principal. After graduating from Veedersburg High School, he went to Wabash College where he received an A. B. From there he went to Purdue University for his M. S. Will my cap fit my hair-style? Jane expresses the thoughts of herself and her fellow senior girls as each is fitted for a cap and gown for Commencement. The people are:( left to right) Jane Meyer, the representative from the company, and Cindy Burger. It would seem as if each of these seniors is doing something quite different from the other. Perhaps so, but they do all have one thing in common: they are attending the annual Senior Achievement Banquet, sponsored by the Lowell Lions ' Club. 57 SWEATERS Peggy Steuer, Dennis Perzo, and Dennis Theis discuss the possibilities before choosing class sweaters for the 1967 graduates. Hooley MAN A GERS This was a familiar picture this year as All- Conference frontliner Reggie Llewellyn is wide-open under the basket. Reg was also named to the All-Sectional and All-County teams. Ron Shipley ups another bucket against Griffith as Terry and Ray look on. Due to illness and injury this year, Ron failed to see much action. He made a fine come¬ back and performed well during the Sectionals. Reggie fights for position as Ray dumps a two-pointer Chances are that there was no rebound for Ray was a top scorer this year. Ray ' s All-Conference chances for next year look really good! 94 SENIOR - VARSITY John Turtle Stuhlmacher stretches for jump ball during the Seniors vs. next year ' s varsity game. The hardened veterans proved their ability by beating the young upstarts by a score of 74 to 65! Reg Llewellyn led the scoring for the Seniors and Terry Hoffman was high point man for the varsity. Steve Beier gets a shot off in spite of John ' s wild attempt to block his shot. Mr. Koontz should take note of how Reggie, Ronnie, and Terry are in position for the rebound. So you see the year wasn ' t wasted, coach! Terry Brown displays his piay- making ability before setting up Reggie for a two-pointer. Brownie played one of his finest games of the year by chipping in with 21 points. 95 Row 1: R. Watson, E. Graafsma, M. Cunningham, G. Nomanson, M. Grant, C. McMillen Row 2: L. McMillen, P. Russel, M. Not only did they win the Conference title for the fourth time in five years, but also the boys took the Sectional title for the first time! Lowell took a third place in the Regional meet by taking four points to beat the first place Hammond Tech. Dan Herbst and Mitch Zakula each took a first in Regional thus qualifying them for the State meet in which they each gained a fourth place. During the regular season our grapplers had a record of 12 wins and only 2 losses. Joe, who is chiefly a mile runner, is only a sophomore and will have two more years to dis¬ play his talents. 102 Joe Little clears a high jump bar in true form. Joe, however, didn ' t take on the regular duties as high jum¬ per. John Gray did almost all the jumping and did a fine job, too! Chuck Laumeyer takes the lead in the high hurdles. Chuck did a fine job this year and his All-Conference chances for next year look good. John Gray is close behind him. He, too, has a fine chance next year. John Gray lets out with another fine jump. (He surely does get around!). John was our main¬ stay in this event also. He ran the low hurdles , too. Drummond Black bests teammate Jack Drew by inches as they take first and second in the 220 in the meet with Wirt. BASEBALL Row 1: G. Row 2: G. N. Stuppy, Row 3: J. J. Wilson, Hutton, N. Cloniger, R. STUDENT COUNCIL Starting with a new constitution, the Student Council underwent a complete renovation this year. The reformed, well-organized Student Council started the 1963-64 school year by presenting a much-needed new score board to the school. This scoreboard can be used to keep track of points at wrestling meets as well as serving at basketball games. Another major undertaking of the Student Council was the sponsoring of a drive for the needy at Christmas time. This drive was well- received and it is hoped it will be made an annual project of the Council. Under the competent leadership of Mr. Braun, the Student Council has many plans for the future that will be for the betterment of the school as well as the community. Officers (left to right) C. This year, the Thespians took two field trips to Chicago to view the hit productions Camelot , How to Succeed in Busi¬ ness Without Really Trying , and The Fall of the Roman Empire . These trips prove valuable in that the drama enthusiasts are given the opportunity to observe live plays by professional actors. For the Thes¬ pians, under the sponsorship of Mr. Martin, the highlight of the year was the presentation of a two-hour con¬ cert by the nationally known Wayne King and his orchestra. This was the first of what the Thespians hope will be a series of professional entertainment to come to Lowell. SENIOR PL A T This lively courtroom comedy- drama centered around the jury ' s indecision as to the innocence or guilt of the defendant, one Yvette Yvette Gordon. Due to the persis¬ tence of Mrs. Livingston Baldwin Crane, a wealthy society woman, the jury was hopelessly deadlocked for a period of three days. However, through trickery, bribery, and blackmail, Mrs. Crane succeeded in persuading the jury to vote for an acquittal for the defendant. Well, Mrs. Crane, what is your verdict? JUNIOR PLAY Based upon, the autobiography of Jesse Stuart, the play told of the trials that young Jesse faced while trying to bring education to the children of rural Kentucky, Many of the parents were against educa¬ tion and wished to close the school. Jesse proved his abi¬ lity as a teacher when his p. nils won a scholastic contest with Landsburg School Cham¬ pions. The show was written by Dennis Keithley, Betty Gray, Jerry Boyd, Nancy Dinsmore, and Don McMahon. Betty Gray and Dennis Keithley were also the student directors. Several acts displayed the many talents of the Lowell High School students. Two of the evening ' s highlights were the boys can-can and ballroom dancing groups. Both of these were directed by Mrs. Hill. The entrance of the group of vaudevillians added fun, excitement, and hilarity to the show ' s entertainment. It was at this time that the band attended band camp in preparation for their first show¬ ing as a participant in the marching band contest at the Indiana State Fair. During the summer months the band performed at a number of parades, including a Centennial celebration. Another highlight of the year, aside from the presentation of four concerts to the public, was the marching in the Christmas Parade in Chicago. The parade was televised and, to the surprise of many people of Lowell, the Band appeared on television. The band has worked earnestly this year, and it has been justly rewarded BAND Two senior band members, Mickey Grant, chosen outstanding band member by his fellow classmates, and Dennis Keithley, recipient of the National Arion Foundation Music Award, have seemingly come to grips over a note-worthy agreement.
