Not all students are on the basketball, football teams, etc., but they are at the games cheering their team to victory - — or feeling depression after being defeated. Sportsmanship is learned and continues to grow through the seasons helping mind as well as the body to grow. Observers learn the true meaning of sportsmanship as do the participatants. We are very proud of all who were on the various teams of the different sports and hope they will continue to do as well. lootball The Fighting Red Devils football team was in the thick of the battle for the conference championship down to the last game. But our last game was postponed because of a severe rain storm and cold spell, and that last game with Dyer turned into a battle for second place and we lost 28-7. The Devils pushed across nine touchdowns to run up tne nighest score in recent years in downing East Gary 60-0. Our football team reached it ' s peak in a battle witn a tough Edison team and we ran ail over tnem winning by a score of 35-19. The defense and offense were tops and like the opposing coach remarked after tne game, tnose Red Devils came to play football. Our Fighting Red Devils did well, How¬ ever, and were leading at the end of tne third quarter by 5 points only to be tied by Chesterton at the gun and then on to lose in tne overtime. With a cold shooting night at DeMotte and their second straight set back the Red Devils rebounded with four strai it victories prior to the Lake County and Chesterton tournies. With a Hi to 9 quarter lead over Griffith in the Lake County Tourney the Red Devils proceeded to flounder and couldn ' t get untracked and came out with a four point loss. At the Chesterton tourney things got worse. A 28 point loss to a young Portage team and a 16 point loss to an average Calumet team made the Red Devils and followers wish they had stayed home. Due to an electrical storm ]Vo days after the opening tip off of the North Judson game, our Red Devils beat the Blue Jays to get back to tneir winning ways. Due to an unusually heavy sleet and snow storm a power line snapped and plunged the gym into darkness and the game was delayed until on Monday. After a win from Highland and a loss to Crown Point and Bishop Noll the Devils avenged their previous loss to Portage by and eight point margin and continued to win tneir conference games by beating Edison, Merrill- Key Jack, everybody ' s watching. ville, and Wirt. Going in to the final game of tne season witn Griffith our Fignting Red Devils were tied with Crown Point for first place in the conference. With another b point loss to Griffith tnings looked bad indeed to take that championsnip. It happened, though, and Crown Point lost plunging Merrillville, Lowell, and Crown Point into a three way tie for the first place trophy. In tne sectional our Devils lead all tne way and eventually beat Hammond Ibch 68-65. Ibam balance showed as 5 of 6 players scored in the double figures. Then that night after leading Hammond Clark the first two quarters and trailing only 3 points at the end of the third quarter our Devils faltered toward tne end and were elininated from the tourney by a 65 to 59 count; thereby, ending the third consecutive winning year for tne Fighting Red Devils. 93 Tom Milakovic was moved to center at mid season and became a demon on tne boards and scored well in toe real impor¬ tant games. Mike Snipes made tne All-Conference team and tied the single game scoring record at 36 . He al30 set a record for the most free throws in one game at 18 out of 19 tries. Randy Harkabus an All-Conference selection set four rebounding and scoring records. Rebounding records set were for most in one season at 21 2 and most in varsity career at 1 68. Also scored most points in one season at 331 and in varsity career at 591 . 91 Jack Van Nad? was switched from forward to the guard position this year and performed excellently in setting up plays. He was also selected for tne Sportsmanship Award. Terry lUttle was the regular sixth man on tne team and played good defensive ball and played well in tne tournies. Larry Nord received All-Conference Honorable Mention; and ne, too, became a playmaker after playing tne forward or center spot last year. 95 Jack makes a cute ballerina on the gym floor. l J V basketball First Row: D. However, we had two boys who took first in the Crown Point Sectional, Larry Cunningham and Danny Herbst. Chuck McMillen and Bob Griesmer placed sec¬ ond in the sectional and ali four boys wrestled in the regionals in Lafayette. Chuck and Dan placed fourth at the regionals.
