Our theme captures the Ho- metown Spirit” as we, the towns people, salute Loving- ton by saying — “Good Morn- ing America . +4 if- TABLE OF CONTENTS “Expressions of the Hometown Spirit” was chosen as this years theme because the yearbook staff felt this phrase perfectly described L.H.S. As you turn the pages you can find a variety of expressions. Some will be funny and make you laugh, others may just be there to help you remember the 87-88 school year, as it was. It was the year 2008. I was flying from Little Bow Creek, Kansas to Gobberson, Penn., to attend the Big Elks convention. The pilot, Nathan Fos- ter, came over the intercom to announce that because of bad turbulence, we would soon be making an emer- gency landing. I began to panic when the plane tipped to one side. Just then a stewardess rushed over to assure me that we would be landing in Lovington Airport in III. I was amazed when I realized that it was Leslie Veakel. She explained how her career as a physical therapist was not as easy as it was cut out to be. She told me that many of Lovington’s former students, who went to Lake- land College, had returned to Lovington. They had be- come successful business people; as the city had grown and prospered. As I departed from the plane, she suggested that I stay at a fine resort until my next flight could be sched- uled. I rented a car at J.B.’s Red Hot Smoking” auto ser- vice. There were 100 cars to choose from, but they were all red T.A.’s. I drove away in a red T.A. and headed for Little Joe Cartright’s dude ranch. It was owned by the rich horse owner Reid Molzen. As I approached the ranch, little Marla Oakly” Hodges sped by me in her Mustang. When the dust cleared, I parked and went to check-in. I kept ringing for the bellhop, but he was too engrossed in the evening news. Peter Jennings had reported that a former Lov- ington resident, Jayme Labrot, had thrown the shot put in the world games and had taken off with it! Well, she has not been seen since; but she has definitely broken the world record for shot putting. I finally got checked in and was invited, by the host, to the evenings big jamboree. Well, I was not experiencing jet lag until I found out that the entertainment was “Jim- my Van Galen.” I went back to my room and fell asleep listening to the radio. The next morning I was awakened by the tele- phone. It was Leslie calling to tell me that my flight had been rescheduled for 12:25. I wanted to see how Lov- ington had changed, so I had to hurry. While driving around I saw that Lovington had finally built it's own K- Mart. I was so amazed at all the changes that I didn't notice how fast I was going. Before I knew it, I was pulled over by a “rolling meadow, a policeman in a golf cart. Low and behold it was Curtis Meadows! I thought he would recognize me as an old friend, but he didn’t believe me. Instead he chained me to the golf cart and we headed for the station. On our way there we went by the old high school. Out in front there was a sign that read, Heather Newberry still serving detention. May be seen, 3 to 4 o'clock.” Once we got to the station, I was booked and thrown in the slammer. Who should be in the next cell but Michelle Fair! She had been picked up by Curtis for being an accomplice in the robbing of the local Har- dees. The real criminals had trouble getting their car started and Michelle had given them a ride, not knowing that they had just committed the crime. Michelle told me about her life as a house wife and seven kids. I asked her what had happened to Amy Curry and Christy Markham after they went to Arizona to get a degree in suntanning. She said they had returned to Lovington and had opened up an accounting firm as partners. They had employed Mr. Bell as their appren- tice. She also told me that Ellen Leach had become a great sailorette and was heating up Singapore. Well, I ended up staying the night in jail and the next morning I went before the honorable judge, Kevin Davis, I had to wait until the first case was over. The plaintiff, Theresa Scroggins, was suing 1-800-DAIL-A-DATE ser- vice owned by Andy Austin. She alleged that she had gotten a “bum deal; he alleged What you get, is what you pay for. Andy won the case. The judge said There- sa should find her own date from now on. It was my turn, Judge Davis decided that since he knew me from high school, he would let me off the hook if I would not come back to Lovington for another 20 years. Well, that was good enough for me. I thanked him and left P.D.Q. I decided I should leave Lovington, before anything else happened to me. I checked out of Little Joe’s and headed for the airport. On the way I listened to W.L.R.W. I was listening to a song about a little boy and girl and then I heard Paul Harvey” Chambers. He re- ported that the mayor of Lovington, Erik Van Pelt, had run away and joined the circus to show off his talents at walking through rings with out falling. I listened to the rest of Paul’s news and comment until I got the airport. I was glad to finally get off to Gobber- son, Penn. I sank down in my seat and breathed a sigh of relief. It was good to get to see Lovington again, and it was great to see that it was still as crazy as ever! 11 +-V- ¥ ±, t.-v ¥ JpT’H- +- -+- -t- J.l - -f- fa -f- ! -t. 7 - -±T - V -+- r 4 “ The Senior class arrived at 2:00 P.M. at Alpine Val- ley, Wisconsin, on March 6th. The show consisted of 273 pieces of art work and photogra- phy from 41 schools in a 12 county area. Lovington students exhibited 34 pieces in that show. Those students who made the show were Amber Workman with a mixed media drawing, Jason Key with a scratch board art project, Na- than Wolfe with an acrylic painting, Leslie Yea- kel with a watercolor, Barry Morgan with a wood block print, Ryan Molzen with two photographs and a watercolor, Eric Elliott with six photo- graphs, Tim Bailey and Nathan Foster with eigh- teen photographs. Further recognition in the show were Amber Workman and Eric Elliott. Still higher awards (Blue Ribbons) indicated that their work advanced to New York for national judging went to Tim Bailey, Jerod Benedict, Eric Elliott (2), and Nathan Foster (9 Photos). The highest photography awards presented in- dicated the top five photographs of the show. Two photographs, one by Eric and one by Nathan were judged to be the best of the show in pho- tography. The prom was held on April 29, once again at Cadies in Tuscola. The building appeared to resemble a large barn on the outside, but inside it was ac- tually a restaurant with dance floor. There were three levels with balcony viewing, and pink and black balloons al- ternately, around each side of the middle balcony. Bouquets of pink and black bal- loons and ribbons were tied on the col- umns and accented the beauty of the dance floor in front of the fireplace. Pic- ture taking started at 6:30 P.M. by Fleener’s Country Studio, and the ban- quet meal began at 7:00 P.M. A fine meal of steak or shrimp, salad, baked potato, rolls, and cake was served. Chad Stevens, A D.J. from WLRW, proved to be good entertainment for the dance. At last the coronation came at 10:00 P.M. Andy Austin and Michelle Fair were crowned 1988 royalty by last year's King and Queen, Trent Doty and Gina Brust. A post prom was held afterward at the high school gym by parents of the sen- iors. A casino set up” was the main en- tertainment. Students gambled with play” money in order to purchase prizes donated by the surrounding busi- ness community. There were also VCR movies to watch, Win Loose or Draw to play, and plenty of food to eat. At 3:00 A M. the ball was over and it was time for all princesses and princes to hurry home, hopefully all had memo- ries to hold on to from the night of Prom '88. 55 “Hold On To The Night” 1. The proceeds from the sale go for sending players to camp, buy sports equipment, to redo the locker room, to help buy new weights, and to help with anything in the sports field. OFFICE WORKERS: Students that work in the office help out by collecting attendance, answer phones, run errands, deliver the announcements, type when needed, sort mail, use the copier, know where supplies are, etc. This helps to train them for future office work. i 1 Student library aides take care of magazines and daily newspa- pers, they handle check-outs and returns of materials, they also have computerized the overdue system. Brian Isaacs was named to the junior varsi- ty and Meridian Conference tournament teams, and Michael Thompson to the con- ference junior varsity team. Kevin and Brian received the most valuable player awards for Lovington High School. The varsity team finished the season with 12 wins and 4 losses. Mrs. Judy Uphoff and Mrs. Joyce Molzen are their coaches. 5 68 sr The marching band members performed at all football games plus marching in the Lovington Homecoming Parade. After football, the band moved inside and the band and chorus then joined with the grade school to present a Christ- mas program, I Love Christmas! Also in the early winter, a jazz band was formed with 20 members working toward performance in the EIU Jazz Fes- tival, which was a successful venture for the group. All winter the pep band which was a combina- tion of jazz band and concert band members performed for all home basketball games. The highlight of the year, after a successful solo and ensemble contest appearance, was the spring concert. The band, chorus, jazz band, and show choir performed and really entertained the audience with their variety of selections. At the annual honors ceremony, Margo Broutin received the top overall student in music this past year. Also honored were April Staples who received the chorus award; George Moutria, band award; and Kevin Davis, jazz band award. The band and chorus capped the year with an appearance at high school graduation. 69 The National Honor Society is a small group of people who have succeeded in their High School classes. Each member has to have a 3.5 grade average, and must display character, leadership, and service. It was a short ceremony with each pre- sent member lighting the sacred can- dles as they read a passage describing the requirements. Then Kevin Davis called the name of each candidate and they signed the register, becoming a member. Afterwards, the members and parents celebrated with cookies and punch. i 1. According 10 WAND TV, Nathan Foster is one of the Nation's best young photogra- phers. We 0ed recognition and cjredit! According to Mrs. Murphy is was a year of firsts! One first, that hopefully has been established as a tradition, was our “Signing Party . The yearbook staff arranged with lots of help from our cooks, to have sub sandwiches, cookies, and pop brought to the front lawn. Everyone then rushed to pick up their new yearbook for a 1st time look and then the signing began. For two periods we singed books, ate, and enjoyed see- ing ourselves in print. We les- sened stolen signing-time from classes this way and made it a well-earned time of recognition for the staff of 86-87. The year progressed to that BLAH” time when nothing is going on. Again we felt the yearbook staff de- served some recognition, this time for meeting our first deadline. We planned a scavenger hunt, an idea bor- rowed from everyone’s fa- vorite radio station, WLRW. A week of scavengering end- ed in a physical challenge tie-off at a pep assembly. Ice-cream sundaes were made on contestants heads, from the top of a ladder no less; eggs were caught be- tween cymbals, the contes- tants were blindfolded of course; and spray-whipped- cream was captured in a cup, in a contestants mouth, the brave soul, Jackie Hissong, earned a free yearbook and a lot of fun, over our 1st time scavenger hunt for recogni- tion. The biggest 1st for the yearbook this year was its recognition as a class. A class like any other; with as- signments, quizzes, tests, and grades. We earned more than just a pat on the back for a job well-done, we earned credit! : n 2 3 86 1. Books being distributed at 1st annual signing party. 2. $30.00 worth of pizza?! 4. 3. But expressions were the phrases used by students of 1988. Expressions were the signs used at the games. Expressions were the actions at the assemblies, plays, dances, and in the classrooms. Expressions were everywhere, and we feel we've collected the best of those for you to remem- ber L.H.S. in 1988.
