Vice-Presidentjim Vice-President; Jim Curry. School Board regular meetings are held on the second Monday of each month. Special meetings are held whenever needed, so that altogether the School Board probably averages about two meet- ings per month. The Board sends a delegate to the State School Board Convention, and usually two or three members attend this meeting. The Con- vention is held each year at the Palmer House in Chicago. The School Board has completed the Life Safety work at the High School over the past several years and considers this a worthwhile accomplish- ment, because it has upgraded and made much- needed renovations in the building. Two new members were elected to the Board this past year. Alma Fair and Maurice Thomas were seated on the Board at the November 1985 Board Meeting. Guidance Counselor M Organizations 35 Yearbook To finance the 1986 yearbook, advertisement space and yearbook subscriptions were sold. The yearbook staff soon realized that it is easier to sell than it is to collect the money. The staff took one day out of school to go sell ads to area businesses. In addition to the ads sold on that day, letters were sent and phone calls were made to further the sales. The receipts from the candy machine also aided in the financing of the yearbook. Mr. Don Bell was the advisor and Doug Davis the editor. It is our hope that this yearbook is something you can enjoy in the years to come. Row 1: Angie Quick, Mr. Bell, Patty Patterson. During homecoming week, students at LHS worked frantically to prepare their class floats and windows for competition under 1983 s theme — Centennial Celebra- tion. A snake dance Thursday evening lit the enthusiasm. This procession led to the school where a bonfire awaited. Friday, the kindergarten through second grade, led by Mrs. Stinson. Mrs. Mechling. and Mrs. Long, marched through the high school halls carrying signs that read Go Panthers! School was dismissed that day with a student car parade that went through town. The Seniors capitalized on the event with a chili supper, as did the Sophomores with their mum sales. Activities began Saturday with the annual parade, this year consisting of more than eighty different floats, bands and various groups. The parade was temporarily brought to a halt when the Senior float caught on fire from the smoke bombs being used inside it. The parade's participants were then served a meal before leaving for home. Later in the evening, the Alumni banquet hosted 326 people. As a part of the hundred year celebration, former homecoming queens were invited back. Since homecomings began in 1946 there have been thirty-nine queens, but only twenty-one were able to attend cither the parade or dance. Some of the former queens were able to participate in the Grand March. Coming from as far as California and Ohio to as near as Lovington, these returning queens made the 100 year celebration a special one. But no one could have felt so special that night as our newly crowned King Jon Day and Queen Rhonda Yoder. 32 King Rod Fair and Queen Trudy Beauchamp Junior-Senior Prom The 1986 Junior-Senior Prom theme was This Could Be The Night. The Junior Class beau- tifully decorated the Richards Treat Center at Millikin Uni- versity with streamers and an archway of blue and white bal- loons. Everyone was enter- tained by the ILLINOIS BAND. Rod Fair was Crowned King and Trudy Beauchamp was Crowned Queen. The Mas- ter of Ceremonies was Tom Wilhelm and the Class Will was read by Sue Reedy; the Class prophecy was read by Debbie Wolfe. Post Prom was held at the Mt. Zion Bowl from mid- night to 3 A.M. 55 Class President. Looking around 1 see that new buildings have been erected — Lovington Memorial Hospital. Birch Point Mall. The Candy Store, and Dawn s Dairyland. I suddenly become quite hungry and decided to head down to Bill's Cafe, as that was the best and only place to eat twenty years ago. I walk in the front door to find that things had changed. Bill's was now a night club with Trudy Beauchamp as the main attraction singing Hernando's Hideaway. I decided that Bill's was not the place for me and headed farther down. There I found a new cafe. Darren's Dungeon. It sounded good so I went in. Inside. I saw a familiar face on the new video game. Dungeons and Dragons, the face was David Kincade's. The waitress showed me to a table and gave me the menu. Looking inside I decided to go on. I went to the candy store to grab a snack. There behind the counter was Darla Reed, still with that friendly smile. The proprietor, Beth LaBrot. came out to offer me the day's special that was everyday's special, M Ms and Dr Pepper. I wondered how L.H.S. had changed during the years as I headed towards the school. Walking in the door I saw that they had finally retiled the floor. Mr. Farr had been promoted to superintendent as Mr. Gullick had left to start a new life. 1 checked out the library to sec if any new drastic changes had been made and sure enough. Mrs. Hicks had changed the rate of overdue books to 55.00 per day. I looked in the chemistry room and all there was left were a few pieces of shattered glass as a result of an accident. The careless students tried to mix hydrochloric acid and Dawn Dishwashing liquid. After the accident. Mr. Allen retired; he could not handle all the excitement. I went to the office and found Mr. Hogan; Mr. Spencer's back never did heal properly. Hogan told me the football team finally had a winning season as all members were required to go to Patrick's Football Gimp; where young men go to get tough. I searched for Mrs. Uphoff to see if she was still chasing people down the halls but found that she had given up teaching to become a ralliest. her dream fulfilled. Jennifer Stoneburner had taken her place in teaching. I went down to the shop to see Mr. Mac and he told me that he had been overloaded with more tasks with no extra pay. I'd had enough and ran out the door where I almost tripped over Doug Davis, the new yearbook manager, try ing to get a candid shot. I kept running and ran into Rod Fair who shook my hand and asked me for my vote in the next election as he was running for mayor of Lovington against Marc Agney. Walking through town, a terrible accident occurred, a little blue bug hit and hospitalized me for the day. After they rushed me to the hospital. Julie Hissong, M.D. was at my side. After spending the day there, they released me with a few bumps and bruises. Later on. the driver of the car. Sue Reedy, sent me a bouquet of roses in regret. I continued my tour of the town and much to my amazement I saw a rally of people standing in the middle of town. I could hear someone yelling. I have a dream — to make the people of Lovington better than any other town! As I got closer. I could see that it was Rod Fair campaigning again. Looking through the crowd. I saw a few familiar faces, one of which was Mrs. Bolsen; she was pregnant with twins, which would give her a total of six children. A man ran up to me and pinned me with a button of Marc Agney with this motto: Vote for The Man Who Cares! The man was Enrique Miro. our former foreign exchange student, he had become an American citizen and joined in American politics as a campaign manager. Still walking I found Christina Scheutz giving a speech on grinding rats. Suddenly. I hear someone yell. Look! It's Mel the Masher! I turned around to see Mel Workman. I walked on to run into a couple of uniformed men on leave; they were Cody Kearney and Gene Broutin. Close behind was Lisa Alumbaugh; she couldn't resist a man in uniform. I pulled on jpy walkman to hear Erie Dyer introducing the hot new group. Bang! — consisting of Debbie McCoy as lead singer. Rhonda Yoder as backup, and Lynn White on bass. Jamming to the tunes. I ran into John Day. he had become the president of Poor Farmers of America; T.G. Redfern was his vice-president. As I headed out of town. I found Brad Kilcullen shooting baskets. He was practicing for his Celtic's game the next day. As the sun went down and I headed out of town. 1 wondered to myself, Did I actually live here? 59 Senior Class Trip OPEN ALL YEAR Shortly after midnight on May 3rd, 15 excited Seniors left for Kings Island in Cincinnati, Ohio. They boarded the Amy Moni- que, one of the Serendipity Schooners and prepared to party. The schooner (it's not a bus!) was great. It was equipped with every- thing from headphones in every seat to a microwave. Almost everyone slept on the way over except a few brave souls that tried to defy the laws of nature and stay awake for the duration of the weekend. After arriving in Cincinnati we ate lunch at the Bob Evans and then drove to Kings Island. The park was fabulous. However, the weather was a bit chilly to the dismay of the tan seekers, who, despite the current temperature, donned their shorts, having faith that it would soon warm up. The class had a fun day full of rides, games, and FOOD. In the early evening we checked into the Kings Island Inn, our hotel. Some of us got hungry and had pizza delivered to our room. Later that night we returned to the theme park for more of the same. I guess we were gluttons for punishment. After the park closed we returned to our hotel rooms where we soon fell asleep, despite our valiant efforts not to. On Sunday we had brunch at the hotel's restaurant, then headed for the Cincinnati Zoo. There we saw white Bengal Tigers, apes, snakes, fish, and plenty of deer (of the two legged variety). On the way home we stopped at the Paramount Music Palace in Indianapolis. While we chowed on pizza a large pipe organ rose up out of the floor and played our school song. You better believe that every person in the restaurant knew we were there after that. After leaving for home we danced in the aisles of the schooner to music from the sixties. When we arrived home we were all sad to see it end. We all would like to thank Levi and Gloria Yoder, Larry and Pam Hissong, Richard and Marjorie Broutin, and of course Captain Darling for making the trip a mem- ory that we will always cherish. 60 61 Graduation Lovington High School Gym 7:30 p.m. May 23, 1986 Prelude ........................Jr.-Sr. High School Band Matthew Mueller, Director Processional ................... The aides work the hour of their study hall. They do such things as straighten shelves, card and shelve books, check out books and magazines, etc., things to keep our library in order. We helped move the uptown library into its new building from the Methodist Church. We worked long and hard all day to do this. It was a wonder- ful experience for us. Our officers are as follows ... I live in Spain at Barcelona. My address is Marquesa de Castellvell n-45 Sant Feliu de LLobregat Barcelona, Spain. I came to U.S.A. in August 29th to learn English in Lovington High School for a year. I'm a graduating senior here at L.H.S. In Spain I went to Izarra High School in Victoria, Northern Spain, about 2000 students, about 300 in Junior Class. This was a boarding school. I go to school in Spain from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. We have 8 classes, each one is an hour long. My classes last year were: Math, Fisica (Physics), Chemistry, Biology, History, Filosopia (Philosophy), and English. I hope that after school I'll go to college, this college is in Barcelona and I guess I'm going to study Telecommunications Engineering. I have been in New York, Chicago, Indianapolis, Springfield, and Lovington, and I think there is a big, BIG difference between them. I really liked this year of my life because I learned a lot of things. I smoke Camel Lights. If you want an opinion, it is the best kind, I know it for sure. At the end of this year. I'm going to San Francisco, Miami, New York, and back home to Barcelona — it's gonna be awesome to see those wonderful cities and to be on the Golden Gate. I'll see you in the Heaven. Bye, Enrique Miro Lovington Library Ground Breaking Lovington Library Board William Gullick, breaking the ground for the beginning of the library.
