Brian Elzy Prophecy Having been in the Lovington area on business, I decided to drop by the old town and see how it had withstood the years. Of course, I had expect- ed some change, but nothing could have prepared me for the shock that accompanied my first glimpse of the village in twenty years. The small village that had once stood sleepily on Route 32 was now a bustling, thriving metropolis that could rival Chicago for size. Expansions of new industries and suburbs spread for miles around, and in the center of the city stood the factory that started it all: Sharon Dyer's World of Numb- chucks. I assumed —judging from the tremendous growth of the city — that there were many stories I had missed, and so I headed in the direction of the only place I knew to go to hear them all — Sarah Brown's. Her shop still stood in the same place, but it too had undergone some changes, and was now Madame Sarah's Magic Mirror Salon. I stepped into the shop and was surprised to see former foreign-exchange student Joachim Hirschlcr getting up from having his hair cut. I questioned the Class of '84 graduate and learned that his great love for Lovington had compelled him to stay. He was now mayor of the city and addressed by his citizens as Burgomaster Hirschlcr. When Joachim left, I sat down in the chair and waited for Madame Sarah to come back into the shop. In the background I could hear a beautiful love song playing on the radio. I listened and was astonished to learn that it was Stacey Isaacs' new duct with Ronnie Milsap. destined to keep them the reigning queen and king of Nashville. Madame Sarah returned and I told her that I only needed to catch up on the Lovington gossip after having been gone several years. I was shocked to hear that she was now charging five dollars for a gossip session. After having reluctantly paid her. she began. Having learned of the success of two Lovington alumni had left me curious, so I asked of the fates of the remaining graduates of the Class of '84. I learned that Stacey Brown, after working her way up as a model for Frederick's, is now finding fame and fortune as the owner of PLAYGIRL magazine. Standing firmly behind Stacey is her personal secretary and confidant Michelle Gillenwater, who was responsible for the business as- pects of the partnership. Now living in New York, Tammy Clough is working as a psychiatrist, as there are a lot of people there with serious problems. Brad Yoder was recently named “Head Coach of the Year after leading his Fighting Illini to a shut-out victory over UCLA in the Rose Bowl. She told me that Donita Bryant, after a near fatal overdose of Garfield, was president of Garfield's Anonymous, an on-going campaign to stomp out the affection for the endearing feline in the early stages. Spanish student Jorge Alcalde had built a small publishing company into a large empire, which specialized in publishing English grammar books. Former K-Mart employee, Kevin Franklin, revolutionized the art of scooping snow after inventing the Nova Snow-Scooper. Madam Sarah told me I only needed to look as far as Lovington to find the remaining Class of '84 graduates, so I thanked her and left the shop. Outside I flagged down a taxi. I got in and was surprised to see that the driver was Pam Hodges. She was still cruising Lovington, only now she was being paid for it. Pam took me deep inside the city to the part called Old Lovington . There I paid her and got out to examine the remnants of the Lovington I had known. Everything looked much as it used to except for the addition of one new building. That building, adorned in flash- ing neon lights, read Kidwell’s Numbchuck Instruction Classes. I noticed that an ambulance was pulling up in front, and Coach Kidwell was being loaded on a stretcher, covered with bruises. I walked down State Street a ways and sat down near the curb. Something beside me caught my eye. It was a NATIONAL ENQUIRER. I picked it up and looked at the front cover which read: Estranged Wife of Thompson-Finkc Construction President Charged With Shooting Of Husband. Insiders say that President Steve Finkc had been seen with Lovington socialite Debbie Wolfe. The accompanying photo read: Courtesy of Amber Kearney's Smut-Pics Inc. I turned to the next page and saw the Picasso of hair, Kelly Rcdfern, creating a bizarre new hair style for Phyllis Dillcr. On the following page was the huge headline: U.F.O.’s Kidnap Mark Clarkson: Psychiatrists Say His Incredible Story is True! It sounded a little farfetched, but 1 knew the National Enquirer prints only the truth. Further inspection revealed that the ENQUIRER had changed little, so I laid it back down and continued on my way. A loud disturbance came from inside the Hardware State Bank, and I was about to investigate when Todd Reed burst out the doors with two cops in hot pursuit. I later learned that Todd had made a rather large withdrawal from the bank. Across the street, at Foster's Luxury Furs, I spotted alumni Jim Brust. He told me that he was chief forest ranger for Wolf Creek State Park. He then rushed off to an emergency call of disturbance on the old familiar tent site. I kept walking until I reached the old high school, w hich somehow was still standing. From outside I could hear the roar of a crowd coming from the gym. I went inside and was astounded to sec a multitude of people attending a ceremony of some sort. I soon learned that Principal Kevin Elder, or Bubba to the students, was awarding still-senior Shawn Evans the Javier Mcrcadc Congressional Medal of Perfect Attendance. It was rather conspicuous that Shawn was handcuffed to truant officer Darin Hays. After the ceremony Bubba offered to give me a tour of his scholl, and as I passed the library I saw Mrs. Thompson moderating a Scholastic bowl meet. She was still trying to pronounce the word acids . Down the hall Mr. Gullick was refusing Mrs. Wilson's request for a new chair because of her failure to keep her window shades the same length. So having seen enough of the school, I was ready to leave. Just before going out the door I noticed a wall-size mural entitled “The Mouse That Ate L.H.S. It was signed by Jim Rambo. It was getting late so I started back to where I had gotten out of the cab. While I was walking I noticed that a certain runner had passed me several times. I came to the conclusion that it could only be Janette Elzy in training for next year's Olympics. All of the day's excitement had made me quite hungry, unfortunately the only restaurant I knew of was Bill’s Cafe, and I was out of Alka-Seltzer. NEverthclcss. when 1 got back to Old Lovington, I searched out the restaurant. I was surprised to sec in the place of the small cafe, a large four- star restaurant called Bill's Flaming Bar-B-Quc. The speciality or the house was flaming ribs, served with red-hot entertainment. I sat down at a table near the door and was shocked to sec Elana Staples performing an exotic dance on the table tops. Proprietor Carrie Belcher came to take my order. She told me that the restaurant business was the best way she'd found yet to meet guys. While I was waiting to get my order I recognized Mr. Bell helping the dancers with their figures. In another corner a crowd was gathered, so I went to investigate. I found that it was a party to honor Jeff Probus for winning the Rockome 500 buggy race. After I finished eating it was late and time for me to go. I looked back on the day’s events and realized that twenty years had not changed the Class of '84 all that much. 49 Will Wc. the members of the Class of 1984, being of sound mind and believing in the certainity of our departure from Lovington High School, do hereby make this document our last will and testament as seniors at L.H.S. Of winning, of learning, and growing by each. They listened to tapes to help concentration, And got up earlier than anyone in the nation. Long practice, hard work, and shared dedication, Brought them wins, close games, and some frustration. They sang their school song with gusto and pride. To let others know of the true Panther Pride. The starting line-up was awesome and bold. The best in the Conference, (if the truth was told). The fans were behind them 100%. And came to witness the Panther ascent. A new coach and new tactics made it hard to adjust. But the change was accepted without much fuss. They reached for their goals and did their best, And they'll be back next year to better their best.
