The breeze was blowing softly, the sun shining brightly, and it was just the right weather for a reunion. That s just what the graduating class of 1980 decided to do. The place was Owen City, which was owned by TERRY OWEN. As my fellow class members stood and talked of all the good times they had and of all their other experiences, I decided to look through some of the old newspapers I had found. As I looked at the Moultrie County News, I found that Mrs. Ellen Thomas had retired from her teaching job at L.H.S. and LORRI CLARK had taken her place as the physical education teacher. This kind of surprised me since I didn’t ever quite remember them getting along. As I continued my browsing through the school news, I discovered there was a new debate team starting. It seemed to be that JEFF KRAUEL and JOHN JONES were on the debate team against Mrs. Solt, the physics teacher. It said they really couldn’t seem to handle her, so Mr. DAVE KIDWELL, the college professor was coming to teach science at L.H.S. Then, much to my amazement, I couldn’t believe it, but FRED CLARK had become assistant band director next to Bob Hutton. And in the last section of school news, I saw that LORRI MCKINNEY had become the first woman coach at Notra Dame since Murf was already there, so she had to follow to keep an eye on him. Also, JIM COSLOW had become head custodian at the school. After awhile, I got tired of looking at that paper, so I turned to the Decatur Herald. On the front page was a picture of SC O I I C LARKSON with the before and after pictures of his recent nose operation. I couldn’t believe it was him. As I looked at the next page under the entertainment section, I saw that CONNIE WOOD had started performing as a concert pianist all over America. Then I was trying to hunt for some entertainment for our class members to do, and I noticed the circus was coming to town with their No. 1 attraction being PAM MAYCROFT and her elephant “Dumbo”. It seemed as if Pam was doing quite well and that if people looked at the ears on Pam or the elephant, they couldn’t tell who was who. I thought we could maybe go there but SABRINA JOHNSON was fighting at the Assembly Hall tonight. We finally decided to go watch the circus since the fight was sold out. Then I was looking through the rest of the paper and I came to the birth section. Under the name “DAVIS” was a baby boy born to RONDA and Jeff Davis of Lovington. And, as the old saying goes, “Like father like son,” the boy was 6 feet tall when born! As we began our walk to the circus, we decided to look around town before we went. Instead of walking, we decided to rent a car and where else did we get it but at AMY NEWBERRY’S “Rent-a-Riviera.” She was doing pretty well in her business, especially with Rivieras. We noticed that Owen City had more new businesses booming than when we were in school. There was a place called Rent-a-Date, owned by TON' BROWN. We figured that Tony was a good manager at this business since he was always the Burt Reynolds at school. Then right next to Tony’s business was his good friend SCOTT BICKNELL. Scott had a pretty good Dairy Farm skyrocketing and we knew that it had to be because of the help from Lana. Then, just a few stores down, was the new “Roach Exterminating” business, owned by MARK TROWER - you know, him and those roachkillers!! I just couldn’t believe that all these ’79 Seniors really made it this far. Next, we went on to the other end of town and guess what business we saw next? You’re right - it was MARK DODD’S carry-out liquor and even though Mark owned it, PAT FITZGIBBONS was the head of the business. They do a pretty good job and are in good terms with everyone - especially the teenagers. Since we are talking about teenagers, I guess I’ll tell you about the main place for teenagers. BRIAN FORBESS owns his own T-Shirt factory with no other transfers available than “Nano-Nano!” In business with Brian’s shirt factory was PENNY NEWBERRY with her newest creation of mod jeans!! Then we noticed another new building added to Owen Town and it was PAT HENDRIX’S Child Care Center. As we went by, I thought I noticed the guy standing outside and I was right! It was DAVE EDRINGTON, the owner of his own barber shop which was called, “Buzz Barber Shop”. And waiting in line to get his hair cut was CURT CLOUGH and gang, J.C. and the boys for their international motocross racing tour. Then to keep our town in order was the office of JOANNA GENTRY, the first woman lawyer in Owen Town. It seemed as if all the really nice businesses were gathered together in one section of town. Bill’s Cafe was now owned by LISA PROBUS. Also a new cafe, the “Brown Jug” was owned by DEBBIE ELZY. On down the street was a beauty-shop owned by RONDA TARR. As we passed by, we stopped and peeked through the window. Everyone was carrying canteen purses. Next in the category of new stores, was a department store with its grand opening beginning. As we walked in, we saw GARV JACKSON buying a new Barbie Doll. We just laughed at the sight of this, but we even laughed harder when we saw that the cashier was DAV’E CREEK who really didn’t know what he was doing. Everyone was getting away with everything but Dave didn’t notice it. As we were leaving the store, NEIL DETTLING, the new owner of Boyer Construction, came in with his work clothes on. We talked to him about his construction work, and then we left. But, much to our amazement, out in the parking lot was CHERIE CRUTCHFIELD washing the cars. We wondered what she was trying to prove, but then remembered that Cherie was always good at washing cars while she was in school. After we paid Cherie for washing the rented Riviera, we continued our drive through Owen Town. One of the most breathtaking sights was the new church with Reverend JAY TUSING as the head evangelist. It seemed that Bible School was going on because of all the children outside, and ROGER NEWLAN was taking pictures for the paper. And, this may be hard to believe, but out in front of the church, SUSY YOUNG was picketing, trying to get marijuana legalized. Finally we arrived at the circus and next to the circus site was the Hawthorne Lodge, ran by CAROLYN PHILLIPS. As we walked around at the circus, we saw a lot of the ’79 Seniors there with their families. We saw BECKY WOODARD, who was hunch back because she was having trouble carrying around all those Olympic Gold Medals from track. We also saw LISA FAIR, who was the new secretary at the High School where she was known for issuing three hundred passes a day for the kids to get out of school. Then, the next person we saw was PETE FROST, who was trying very hard to make his week a week of only weekends so he could have fun all of the time. Pam was not the only entertainment at the circus. There was also JEFF FOLEY giving his imitation of Van Halen; also giving a demonstration on the parts of the car was BILL PARR, the manager at NAPA Auto Parts in Mt. Zion. Also, ALICE SANDIFER BARNARD was there with her latest quilt displays. After we left the circus, we saw JOHN SMITH, leading his entire family of nine home. This family business must run in the family. We finally went back to our reunion place and said our goodbyes to each other. We knew we had discovered a lot today and we will always remember the “Seniors of ’79”! This year, coached by Mr. Groothuis and Mr. Morgan, marked a youth movement in the basketball program with all but two players being Sophomores and Freshmen. The most valuable player this year was the only senior on the squad, Gary Jackson. Gary led the team in several categories and was an outstanding player. Phil Parrish, the only junior on the team, showed much improvement over the season. Eric Smith, Les Reedy, and Kenny Franklin, who also started this year, were examples of the youth movement. All the hard work and long hours spent by the Junior Class was paid off when the big night arrived and the prom proved to be a success. 1979 Prom Court Queen and King Candidates for this year’s Prom were Terry Owen, Lorri McKinney, Lisa Fair, Jeff Foley, Pat Fitzgibbons, and Dave Edrington.
