The staff has worked hard from the beginning of the year un- til after graduation to capture memories for readers to always remember. Our year brought crisp autumn evenings filled with excitement as the Panthers played football, first and last Homecomings, suspense from the volleyball games, Christmas party madness and the dance, the big snow that kept us out of school, basketball season with the thrills of victories and ago- nies of defeat, donkey basketball, treasured moments at prom, organization meetings that broke up the sometimes monoto- nous school day, and LHS in its everyday routine. These were memories created in the 1976-77 school year. We’ve tried our hardest to include all of them in the book. The staff must be driving on now; so, read and enjoy. DEDICATION FOR THREE During four long, hard working years our class advisors have stayed with us and helped us out with each and every problem. Due to their generosity, we would like to dedicate the 1976-77 yearbook to Mrs. Foley, Mr. McGregor, and Mrs. Uphoff. The three of them were a great asset to our class. No class could have had a better combination of advisors. Mrs. Foley was always eager to help. With her home economics background, when it came to torn stage curtains and costumes, she was quite handy. When fall Homecomings and spring prom de- manded building, Mr. McGregor was right there guiding our hammers. And, whenever the class had to actually sit down and plan activities, such as class plays or a class trip, organization came from Mrs. Uphoff. Even though some- times she wasn’t organized herself, she always could keep us in line. Put all three together and it adds up to some great class advisors. Thanks for all you’ve done and we will all miss you. Oass of 77 MR. MC GREGOR MRS. UPHOFF 5 Hey, what’s happenin’? Denise De Oliviera was enrolled as a Senior at L.H.S. and lived with Mr. and Mrs. John Foley during her six month stay. The students were eager to meet and get to know Denise. It is hoped that the students and Denise have learned a lot about each other. Denise was asked if there was a difference between the U.S. and Brazil. Her comment was that there was no comparison, each country had different ways, especially with food. Denise broke the monotony of the prairie living by visiting Chicago, St. Louis, Washington D.C., and New York City. Good bye, Denise and good luck! CHRISTMAS PARTY CHRISTMAS VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT The most unique winter was in January of “77”. The bli .zard hit Mid Western U.S. on January 27th at 1:30 p.m. School was dismissed right after lunch and buses started to take the children homeward: but they had to turn back for they could not see: the snow was blowing all around them. Some of the children were not home until the next day be- cause everyone was snowed in. Snow mobile riders got to- gether and took all the children home and took food to the ones in need. Snow was up to 20 feet high in some spots-and all roads were closed. School resumed then on Febuary I. with still snow all around. 17 Just Tom and his hobby horse; what else does he need? THE GOVERNOR VISITS LHS The Governor takes time to pose with the Journalism students. On a cold November 23rd morning, Governor Dan Walker and Representative John Dunn drove spikes in the Penn Central railroad tracks near the Ulrich elevator to commen- orate the 2.5 million dollar repair job being performed on them. The students had heard “the rumor” just a few min- utes before Walker arrived in the area; they rushed out to join several news reporters to see Walker and interview him. The students hopelessly asked the Governor to visit their school, and to their surprise, he said yes! as Walker entered the halls, there was instant chaos. Homework, history tests, and classes were forgotten as students were released from classes to see the Governor. Walker was escorted to the grade school by a mob of students. At the Grade School, Walker helped serve the mashed potatoes for the Thanksgiving day Dinner. After visiting the High School, the Governor, fol- Mrs. Clement invites Governor Walker for a Thanksgiving lowed by many students, visited the Grade School. meal at the Grade School. Debbie M JefTO. His pictures have filled yearbook pages and the Lovington newspaper for years. Mr. Allen has taught here for 33 years. He taught at Stoning- ton Country School in 1938 and then moved to a two room school in Stonington. He then taught south west of Mount Auburn in 1939 and in 1940 he went to the service. When he came back in 1946, he taught in Lovington. His hobbies include music, driving the school bus and garden- ing. We asked him what he planned to do after he retired. He said “home maintenance, photography, and more church” would be his main concerns. When asked why he stayed in Lovington for so long, Mr. Allen said he liked the way the people treated him. They were more friendly here than any where else he had taught. The yearbook staff asked Mr. Allen what his most memor- able times here were. He said that in 1946, 47, and 48 two or three children from his sixth grade class here would come down every night and eat popcorn. They also had a small store front built in the classroom and they sold candies at Mr. Allen in his final year of teaching. noon. We certainly will miss you Mr. Allen and good luck with whatever you wish to do. 93 Mr. Guilick, superintendent. This was Mr. Gullick’s first year at Lovington High School, and we sincerely hope he will have many more. The student body has come to know and respect him the short time he has been here. We sincerely hope he will be here a long time. 94 Mr. Zancha also taught drivers ed. Mr. John D. Zancha, Lovington High School Principal, began his career as a teacher at Elkville, Illinois as driver ed ucation teacher and football coach. His tenure as teacher and Principal at Lovington began in 1959. Mr. Zancha, who was born an only child in Chicago, Illinois, attended a Catholic Parochial school and gradu- ated from St. George High School. He attended Notre Dame University and obtained a bachelor’s degree. He then transfered and graduated from Southern Illinois University with a master’s degree. He is married and has two children, Ralph and Rita. This picture was taken in 1955, a year after college. 95 In this 1961 photo, Mr. Zancha talks with Mr. Byrkett the music teacher.
